SynSetExpan: An Iterative Framework for Joint Entity Set Expansion and Synonym Discovery

Entity set expansion and synonym discovery are two critical NLP tasks. Previous studies accomplish them separately, without exploring their interdependencies. In this work, we hypothesize that these two tasks are tightly coupled because two synonymous entities tend to have similar likelihoods of belonging to various semantic classes. This motivates us to design SynSetExpan, a novel framework that enables two tasks to mutually enhance each other. SynSetExpan uses a synonym discovery model to include popular entities' infrequent synonyms into the set, which boosts the set expansion recall. Meanwhile, the set expansion model, being able to determine whether an entity belongs to a semantic class, can generate pseudo training data to fine-tune the synonym discovery model towards better accuracy. To facilitate the research on studying the interplays of these two tasks, we create the first large-scale Synonym-Enhanced Set Expansion (SE2) dataset via crowdsourcing. Extensive experiments on the SE2 dataset and previous benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of SynSetExpan for both entity set expansion and synonym discovery tasks.

Amsterdam and Helsinki today became the first cities in the world to launch open AI registers that track how algorithms are being used in the municipalities. In a press release, the cities said the registers would help ensure that the AI used in public services operates on the same principles of responsibility, transparency, and security as other local government activities. "Algorithms play an increasingly important role in our lives," said Touria Meliani, Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam. "Together with the city of Helsinki, we are on a mission to create as much understanding about algorithms as possible and be transparent about the way we -- as cities -- use them. Today we take another important step with the launch of these algorithm registers."

Artificial intelligence technology tested during the Army's Project Convergence exercise largely met expectations and will help transform the way the Army fights in the future, officials say. Army officials held a media roundtable September 23 to discuss lessons learned during the recently completed Project Convergence, which is designed to ensure the Army, as part of the joint force, can rapidly and continuously converge effects across all domains--air, land, maritime, space and cyberspace--to overmatch adversaries in both competition and actual conflict. A key part of the Army's massive modernization effort, the project focuses on people, weapons systems, information, command and control, and terrain to assess areas of advancement and identify areas for improvement. Artificial intelligence, or AI, played a role, along with autonomy and robotics, which Gen. John Murray, USA, commanding general, Army Futures Command, describes as three key technologies for the Army's future. Gen. Murray compares the trio of technological capabilities to those that gave the Germans an initial advantage during World War II.

UK and US marked down on responsible AI

Some of the world's most advanced countries in terms of artificial intelligence (AI) are not prioritising and practicing responsible AI, a report from Oxford Insight and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has warned. In 2019, the Government AI readiness index reported that the UK led the world in terms of government use of AI. But the latest update for 2020 found that while the UK is still a leader on government AI, it lags many other countries in terms of the responsible use of AI. Richard Stirling, CEO of Oxford Insight, said AI was transforming banking and the way governments interact with citizens, but "that transformation is not happening in the same way in every country around the world". The index puts European countries in a strong position for AI adoption.

Two UK-built shoebox-sized supercomputer satellites set for lift-off

Two shoebox-sized supercomputer satellites, built in Scotland to monitor shipping movements from low-Earth orbit, are due for launch this afternoon. Each nanosatellite has an onboard supercomputer with machine learning algorithms that can provide'hyper-accurate predictions' of the locations of boats. The the so-called'Spire' satellites will calculate their arrival times at ports to help businesses and authorities manage busy docks, the UK Space Agency said. They will join a fleet of more than 100 objects in low Earth orbit that work together to track the whereabouts of ships and predict global ocean traffic. Two of the satellites will launch at lunchtime today and another couple will launch on an Indian PSLV rocket on November 1.
