The impact of AI on business and society

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has long been the object of excitement and fear. In July, the Financial Times Future Forum think-tank convened a panel of experts to discuss the realities of AI -- what it can and cannot do, and what it may mean for the future. Entitled "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Business and Society", the event, hosted by John Thornhill, the innovation editor of the FT, featured Kriti Sharma, founder of AI for Good UK, Michael Wooldridge, professor of computer sciences at Oxford university, and Vivienne Ming, co-founder of Socos Labs. For the purposes of the discussion, AI was defined as "any machine that does things a brain can do". Intelligent machines under that definition still have many limitations: we are a long way from the sophisticated cyborgs depicted in the Terminator films. Such machines are not yet self-aware and they cannot understand context, especially in language. Operationally, too, they are limited by the historical data from which they learn, and restricted to functioning within set parameters. Rose Luckin, professor at University College London Knowledge Lab and author of Machine Learning and Human Intelligence, points out that AlphaGo, the computer that beat a professional (human) player of Go, the board game, cannot diagnose cancer or drive a car.

How Criminals Use Artificial Intelligence To Fuel Cyber Attacks

Poisoning an AI system can be alarmingly easy. Attackers can manipulate the data sets used to train AI, making subtle changes to parameters or crafting scenarios that are carefully designed to avoid raising suspicion while gradually steering AI in the desired direction.

Waymo opens driverless robo-taxi service to the public in Phoenix

#artificialintelligence

DETROIT (Reuters) - Waymo on Thursday will relaunch and expand its fully automated, robo-taxi ride hailing service in Phoenix, rebooting its effort to transform years of autonomous vehicle research into a revenue-producing business. Some of the Waymo vans in Phoenix will still have attendants on board. Waymo has not said where or when it will expand its robo-taxi business beyond Phoenix. "You can imagine we'd love the opportunity to bring the Waymo One driver to our home state of California," Krafcik said. Before the coronavirus pandemic forced Waymo to suspend operations this spring, Waymo was using vehicles with no human attendant on board to provide five to ten percent out of a total of 1,000 to 2,000 rides per week in its Phoenix service zone, Krafcik said.

NHS using drones to deliver coronavirus kit between hospitals

The Guardian

An NHS drone is being used to courier Covid-19 samples, blood tests and personal protective equipment between hospitals in England. It is hoped that the trials, backed by a ยฃ1.3m grant from the UK Space Agency, can establish a network of air corridors for electric drones to navigate using GPS. The remote-controlled drone, which will be piloted by an ex-military fast jet or helicopter instructor, will initially fly between Essex's Broomfield hospital, Basildon hospital and the Pathology First laboratory in Basildon. The project is the idea of Apian, a healthcare drone startup founded by Christopher Law and Hammad Jeilani. "Covid-19 has highlighted challenges in NHS supply chain logistics," said Law.

Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity

#artificialintelligence

Even though security solutions are becoming modern and robust, cyber threats are ever-evolving and always on the peak. The main reason for this is because the conventional methods to detect the malware are falling apart. Cybercriminals are regularly coming up with smarter ways to bypass the security programs and infect the network and systems with different kinds of malware. The thing is, currently, most antimalware or antivirus programs use the signature-based detection technique to catch the threats, which is ineffective in detecting the new threats. This is where Artificial Intelligence can come to rescue.

[P] tldrstory: Build AI-powered applications that understand headlines and story text

#artificialintelligence

A zero-shot classifier, backed by a large general language model with no labeled data, is used to label data. Additionally, a txtai index enables ad hoc similarity searches against the data. Example application that uses the tldrstory framework to explore objectivity and bias in recent news headlines related to the 2020 US Presidential Election shown in video above.

How Artificial Intelligence is causing Cyber Attacks

#artificialintelligence

As artificial intelligence (AI) emerges into the mainstream, there is misinformation and confusion about what it's capable of and the potential risks it constitutes. Our culture is enriched with dystopian visions of human ruin at the feet of all-knowing machines. On the other hand, most people appreciate the potential good AI might do for the civilization through the improvements and insights it could bring. Though computer systems can learn, reason, and act, these are still in their infancy. Machine learning (ML) needs massive datasets.
