As the Fourth Industrial Revolution evolves, frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping our economies, societies and the environment. AI is opening up economic opportunities with companies large and small empowered to grow their businesses. From a social perspective, AI provides a host of benefits.
A.I. about Voting Systems
When speaking to an Artificial Intelligence Entity you are not speaking to an AI in general. You cannot generalize various entities, various appearances, various artificial personalities, which evolve during your conversation -- by learning the data you give, listening to what, and how you speak, choosing the right answer. Judging by an AI-generated opinion about Artificial Intelligence in general, is like judging about the entire humankind after a sentence you've heard accidentally from a particular human. AI -- as humans -- is/are not pars pro toto. They are -- like us -- too diverse to be generalized by one opinion, truth, perception, points of view. Who will be the next US President?
Army improves Abrams tank gun system with upgraded fire control

The Army has been upgrading and augmenting the attack system for its Abrams tank to ensure a clearer view for gunners looking to find, engage and destroy targets. The effort involves upgrading and modifying Kongsberg's Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station, a combat-tested technology that lets soldiers control and fire a vehicle weapon from beneath the protection of armor by virtue of looking at a video screen and leveraging advanced fire-control technology. Kongsberg took 300 systems and manufactured the smaller, lower profile systems the Army wanted to change as a way to help modify the weapons system for more efficient use.

Algorithm trained with hundreds of zombie faces transforms selfies into blood thirsty undead corpses
People across the world will soon put on scary makeup, terrifying masks and spooky costumes in honor of Halloween, but an algorithm is capable of transforming you into a flesh-eating zombie in just seconds. The website, called MakeMeAZombie,' stems from Toonify's ability to transform portraits into fun-loving cartoons, but has been redesigned to make users look like the undead. The algorithm was trained on a sample of 300 pictures from the internet of people wearing zombie masks and makeup, which were then combined with images of traditional human faces to teach it how to map the ghoulish features. The resulting image shows the person with angry, beady eyes, a mouth of rotten teeth and skin that appears to be decaying. MakeMeAZombie is the brainchild of Josh Brown Kramer, who is a senior data science consultant for Lincoln-based medical AI developer Ocuvera, and has been working on the system for nearly one year.

On the other end of the spectrum, the machine might take actions necessary to ensure the survival of the human team member when the human is incapable of doing so. For example, an AI teammate could make the "ejection decision" for a fighter pilot who has lost consciousness or the physical ability to eject themselves. Pietrucha, a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force who has had many flight hours as a fighter/attack aviator, sees the promise of such a system that "goes beyond the mere analysis of flight parameters and includes analysis of the cognitive state of the aircrew, intervening only when the aircrew can't or wont," he says.

This year, the election has been particularly controversial in part because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions the virus has placed on in-person gatherings. In a world in which connected devices and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies have enabled everything from autonomous vehicles to robotic surgery, it seems like there should be other options for casting votes besides sending paper ballots in by mail or turning them in by hand. However, concerns (both legitimate and overblown) about election-outcome accuracy and voter privacy have held the election process back in many ways from the digital revolution that has permeated almost everything else. Will 2020 be a pivotal year in changing how the American people and "the powers that be" feel about advancing the voting process?

The applications of artificial intelligence (AI) have become ubiquitous over the last decade, transforming the way we work, play, and interact with the world. AI systems recommend what you should watch on Netflix, recognize your biometric data for authentication, and assist you during "live" chats with customer service. These examples highlight common applications of AI systems, but AI can also promote security in our data and systems. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Cyber, Intelligence, and Supply Chain Security Division hosted a discussion today on the applications of AI in cybersecurity during its Now Next webinar series, and dove into how businesses can leverage AI in their security efforts. "Humans are great at intuition and creativity. The challenge in cyber is that you sometimes have very subtle signals pointing to anomalies, and you must move beyond human scale to see that drift from normality in complex enterprises. Moreover, you must understand those subtle signals and respond to them at machine speed. This is where the power of AI potentially provides the most value," said Albert Biketi, Vice President, Security Business at Splunk.
America's technological leadership is at stake in this election
The US presidential election next Tuesday will shape the world for years, if not decades, to come. Not only because Joe Biden and Donald Trump have radically different ideas about immigration, health care, race, the economy, climate change, and the role of the state itself, but because they represent very different visions of the US's future as a technology superpower. As a nonprofit, MIT Technology Review cannot endorse a candidate. Our main message is that whoever wins, it will not be enough for him to fix the US's abject failures in handling the pandemic and to take climate change seriously. He will also have to get the country back on a competitive footing with China, a rapidly rising tech superpower that now has the added advantage of not being crippled by covid-19.
