Australia's AI community rises to the challenge

Australia's artificial intelligence (AI) community has rallied to a call from Defence and the Office of National Intelligence (ONI) for solutions to key Defence and security challenges. The call was part of the'Artificial Intelligence for Decision Making' (AIDM) initiative, aimed at growing Australia's AI capability and fostering a national community focussed on developing innovative AI solutions for Defence and national security. More than 200 proposals were received. Dr Tim McKay of the Department of Defence said the response was overwhelming and demonstrated the depth and breadth of AI expertise across Australia. "The quality of the submissions was excellent; far above what we expected," he said.

Chinese military eying AI to gain cyber, space dominance: Japan

The Chinese military is aiming to utilize cutting-edge technologies like private sector-developed artificial intelligence to enhance its offensive capability in domains such as cyberspace and outer space, a Japanese Defense Ministry think tank warned Friday. Beijing aspires to match the United States' overall military capacity by transforming its People's Liberation Army into a world-class fighting force with the help of advanced technologies, the National Institute for Defense Studies said in its annual report on China's security strategy. The report said that until the Chinese catch up with the American military, "the PLA will build up its interference and strike capabilities to prevent the United States' military use of both the cyber and space domains." The China Security Report 2021 was released as the rivalry between Washington and Beijing has been intensifying, as has competition for technological hegemony. The United States has restricted exports of semiconductors to Huawei Technologies Co., the Chinese telecom giant that is aiming to expand its dominance of next-generation 5G technology.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami at the commissioning ceremony of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics on Friday, 13th November, 2020 in Abuja. Pantami reiterated that the proposed activities of this Centre map to Pillar No. 7 on Digital Society and Emerging Technologies and this explains the choice of the Centre's name. "Artificial Intelligence is the Refinery of the digital economy and Robotics is very useful in supporting companies as they carry out repetitive tasks. These are 2 very important emerging technologies that will shape the face of future technologies and we have decided to be proactive to enable us play a key role in how these technologies evolve, Pantami said.

As technologies such as 3D printing move the discipline forward in remaking the built environment, AI and generative design are having an impact on architecture from a planning and design perspective, where the profession is largely digital and computational. We spoke with Lilli Smith, Senior Product Manager AEC Generative Design at Autodesk, a practitioner in the field of architecture for more than 20 years -- the last 18 of which have been making the software that architects use to design their creations. In architecture, art, and other creative fields, generative design is a methodology that automates the creation of design options that may balance a variety of competing goals. The latest wave of generative design is driven by artificial intelligence. "This is often the case in architectural design problems," Smith says.

Once in, my first choice (and most players', I would assume) was to try out the multiplayer. If you played last month's "Cold War" open beta, nothing about the multiplayer should surprise you. By default, it plays faster and twitchier than "Modern Warfare," which some fans are sure to welcome. But the game also offers some concessions to a year that has seen the ascent of the slower, more deliberate shooter, namely breakout hits "Warzone" and "Valorant." There's also Fireteam: Dirty Bomb, a mode that felt so poorly thought out in beta that I've avoided it entirely thus far.

Solar power stations in space that beam'emission-free electricity' down to Earth could soon be a reality thanks to a UK government funded project. Above the Earth there are no clouds and no day or night that could obstruct the sun's ray – making a space solar station a constant zero carbon power source. The UK government commissioned new research into the concept of space-based solar power (SBSP) stations as a way to meet the Earth's growing energy needs. The idea is that the stations would capture the Sun's energy that never makes it to Earth and use laser beams to safely send the energy back to Earth. It's an idea first conjured by science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov in 1941 in his science fiction short story Reason where it was revealed a station a mile across was used as an'energy converter' to gather sunlight and beam it across the solar system.


OGNet: Towards a Global Oil and Gas Infrastructure Database using Deep Learning on Remotely Sensed Imagery

At least a quarter of the warming that the Earth is experiencing today is due to anthropogenic methane emissions. There are multiple satellites in orbit and planned for launch in the next few years which can detect and quantify these emissions; however, to attribute methane emissions to their sources on the ground, a comprehensive database of the locations and characteristics of emission sources worldwide is essential. In this work, we develop deep learning algorithms that leverage freely available high-resolution aerial imagery to automatically detect oil and gas infrastructure, one of the largest contributors to global methane emissions. We use the best algorithm, which we call OGNet, together with expert review to identify the locations of oil refineries and petroleum terminals in the U.S. We show that OGNet detects many facilities which are not present in four standard public datasets of oil and gas infrastructure. All detected facilities are associated with characteristics known to contribute to methane emissions, including the infrastructure type and the number of storage tanks.
