Call of Duty video game tournament Dec. 11 pits US, UK armed forces against each other for charity
The day before the annual Army-Navy football game, an even larger interservice rivalry will be contested on video game battlefields. The Call of Duty Endowment (CODE) Bowl on Dec. 11 will match teams consisting of esports athletes from each branch of the U.S. military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Space Force – as well as members of the United Kingdom's British Army, Royal Air Force, and Royal Navy. The matches, played on the recently-released "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" game, will broadcast live starting at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. "The eight teams representing military branches in the four-hour tournament will each have two popular Call of Duty streamers on board, one serving as captain, and will be coached by a Call of Duty League professional. Well-known streamers joining the teams include Courage, LEGIQN, Huskerrs, Swagg, Espresso, Vikkstar, Tommey, C9Emz, and Spratt. Looking for ways to prevent price collusion with AI systems
A small group of economists from Italy, the U.K., and the U.S. has published a Policy Forum piece in the journal Science suggesting that consumers need to be protected from collusive price setting by AI systems. They also outline some possible ways to solve the problem. For most countries, price collusion is illegal. It is where two or more makers or sellers of goods get together and agree to charge higher than market prices for the goods or services they are selling. Such practices are illegal because consumers wind up paying higher prices than they would if prices were market based.
Defense Department working to scale artificial intelligence use
WASHINGTON - The Defense Department is working to scale artificial intelligence, saying the technology shouldn't just be a concept of the future but also should be incorporated now. "We have a tech-native military and civilian workforce that enjoys a fast-flowing, responsive, and tailored information environment, at home when they're on their mobile phones. They want that same experience in the militaries and department systems that they operate. Our warfighters want responsive, data-driven decisions. Our commanders want to operate at speed and with a mix of manned and unmanned capabilities. The citizens seek efficiency and effectiveness from their investments in defense. Artificial intelligence can unlock all of these," explained Lieutenant General Michael Groen, Director of Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, during a recent Pentagon briefing.
Spain to Invest 600m Euro in Artificial Intelligence
PEDRO SANCHEZ has announced plans for Spain to invest 600 million euro into an ambitious new Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy in an effort to transform the country's economy and infrastructure. The Prime Minister said that the government will invest over 600 million euro into the development of a national AI strategy between 2021 and 2023, with the possibility to further funding'if things are done well'. The ambitious new strategy will encompass the application of AI in business, administration, and education and will attempt to make Spain a global centre for the emerging tech field. Of the 600m allocated budget, 275m will be invested directly into technological development. A further 133m will be spent on integrating AI into the economy and production, while 100m will go towards applying AI into public and government systems.

As coronavirus spread in Wuhan, China's secret deals with businesses caused major testing blunders
WUHAN, China – In the early days in Wuhan, the first city first struck by the virus, getting a COVID-19 test was so difficult that residents compared it to winning the lottery. Throughout the Chinese city in January, thousands of people waited in hourslong lines for hospitals, sometimes next to corpses lying in hallways. But most couldn't get the test they needed to be admitted as patients. And for the few who did, the tests were often faulty, resulting in false negatives. The widespread test shortages and problems at a time when the virus could have been slowed were caused largely by secrecy and cronyism at China's top disease control agency, an Associated Press investigation has found. The flawed testing system prevented scientists and officials from seeing how fast the virus was spreading -- another way China fumbled its early response to the virus. Earlier reporting showed how top Chinese leaders delayed warning the public and withheld information from the World Health Organization, supplying the most comprehensive picture yet of China's initial missteps. Taken together, these mistakes in January facilitated the virus's spread through Wuhan and across the world undetected, in a pandemic that has now sickened more than 64 million people and killed almost 1.5 million.
Detecting Change With Artificial Intelligence
In a project for the Defense Department's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), computer scientists have turned to artificial intelligence and aerial imagery to construct a detailed damage assessment solution. The tool can be used remotely and automatically to determine the amount of damage to buildings and structures from a natural disaster or catastrophe. The prototype, known as the xView II model, was tested this fall, with the goal of rolling out a more finalized operational version next year. In the last few years, the U.S. military has seen an enormous amount of weather-related damage to some of its facilities, including the destruction at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, from Hurricane Michael in 2018; extensive water damage at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, from Hurricane Florence's torrential rains in 2018; and flooding of the Missouri River and area creeks that impacted one-third of Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, in 2019. Meanwhile, this fall, California's wildfires raged over 4 million acres causing irreparable damage, while repeated hurricanes barraged the Gulf Coast.
