WASHINGTON: A new flight training program that relies heavily on VR simulations and detailed data is getting Navy trainees better prepared for real cockpits, with some students qualifying for their first solo flight in less than half the time the traditional curriculum requires. Simulations don't just give trainees plenty of digital dress rehearsals before they climb into a physical aircraft, Navy officials told the vIITSEC simulation & training conference Wednesday. Already, big-data analytics are helping instructors and training-unit commanders better understand their students' progress. As the technology improves in the near future, artificially intelligent algorithms could track every aspect of a trainee's performance in simulation, then provide detailed feedback on what to fix. "Project Avenger is our first experimental proof-of-concept class," said Rear Adm. Robert Westendorff.

To achieve this and package processes in containers, Docker uses Linux namespaces in combination with cgroups. U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley is calling on state lawmakers to reject Gov. Charlie Baker's amendments to the "long overdue" police reform bill he returned to the Legislature on Thursday. "This bill is already a compromise and should serve as the floor that we will build upon going forward. It includes essential long overdue common-sense proposals that would save lives," Pressley said in a statement Friday. The Democratic congresswoman said that by "refusing to sign the legislation, sending it back to the Legislature and demanding amendments that will water down important aspects of the bill, Governor Baker is once again demonstrating his disregard for the communities most impacted by our broken status quo system of injustice." Baker sent the long-debated bill back to the Legislature on Thursday with amendments making changes to portions of the legislation dealing with the use of facial recognition technology -- which lawmakers wanted to restrict only to the Registry of Motor Vehicles -- and police training.

The U.S. Energy Department's research arm is leveraging machine learning technologies to simplify the design process for energy systems ranging from photovoltaics and wind turbines to aircraft engine compressors. The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, or ARPA-E, last month announced 23 research contracts totaling $15 million to incorporate machine learning into energy product designs. The first-phase contracts are part of an ARPA-E initiative dubbed DIFFERENTIATE, standing for--take a breath--Design Intelligence Fostering Formidable Energy Reduction (and) Enabling Novel Totally Impactful Advanced Technology Enhancements. David Tew, an ARPA-E program director, said the two-year machine learning effort is focused on the engineering design process with the goal of optimizing power generation systems. Along with wind turbines and photovoltaics, DIFFERENTIATE also will focus on power conversion and heat transfer systems, aerodynamics, photonics and range of foundational energy technologies.

While some enjoy the digital help, performing simple tasks around the home, NOAA and Google signed an agreement to use AI in ways that could transform the weather enterprise. Humans might not have much involvement in mid-air refueling before long. Boeing has flown a test version of its MQ-25 tanker drone with a refueling pod attached for the first time, taking it one step closer to topping up military aircraft. The 2.5-hour flight showed that the autonomous drone's aerodynamics were sound with the wing-mounted pod it's expected to carry much of the time. The test drone, T1, is a precursor to an "engineering development" model that will take Boeing one step closer to a finished vehicle. This could be a crucial machine.

Dr Alex Young is a trained orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who founded Virti and set out to use emerging technologies to provide immersive training for both new healthcare professionals and experienced ones looking to hone their skills. COVID-19 has put most in-person training on hold to minimise transmission risks. Hospitals and universities across the UK and US are now using the virtual patient as a replacement--including our fantastic local medics and surgeons at the Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. The virtual patient uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and'narrative branching' to allow medics to roleplay lifelike clinical scenarios.

WASHINGTON -- In July 2019, Nathan Wang, a student at Shaker High School, walked into the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and dropped off a legislative proposal he wrote to expand artificial intelligence education in K-12 schools.Wang thought the congressman and his staff would take one look at his proposal and toss it in the heap. But to his surprise, Wang got a call from a legislative aide a month later asking for a meeting. Tonko, D-Amsterdam, turned Wang's idea into a bill and recently, members of Congress decided to add the student's idea to the nation's annual defense bill with the hope that spurring the next generation of artificial intelligence engineers would help increase national security and U.S. military strength. "Just two years ago, if you had told me that I would be writing a piece of legislation that an actual member of Congress would actually consider, I would not have believed you," said Wang, 18, a freshman at Johns Hopkins University. "I was certainly not interested in policy stuff, nor did I think I had the confidence to approach anybody on these policy issues.
