US Navy tests orbiting solar panel that could one day beam power anywhere on Earth
A pizza box sized solar panel in orbit is producing enough electricity to power an iPad, according to a succesful test of the technology by the US Navy. The Photovoltaic Radiofrequency Antenna Module (PRAM) was launched in May 2020 attached to a drone that loops around the Earth every 90 minutes and is designed to harness light from the sun to convert to electricity. The 12x12 inch panel is an early experiment for a technology that could one day harness solar radiation from the sun and beam it to anywhere on the Earth. It is designed to make the best use of light in space, which doesn't have to pass through the atmosphere where it loses energy before reaching the ground. The Pentagon one day envisages an array of panels in space that could send power to even the most remote parts of the planet and create a new global power grid.

Governments, the private sector, and civil society all play an important role in achieving the goals. The project, entitled "Engineering as a Facilitator of SDGs: Artificial intelligence and disruptive digital technologies", began in March 2020, focusing specifically on the study of AI and digital technologies and how these might be applied to further progress toward the 17 SDGs. The research is organised into three facets that broadly correspond to (i) an introduction to AI and digital technologies, (ii) analysis of their application to the SDGs, and (iii) recommendations for action that can help develop projects and support the achievement of associated goals.

An Introduction to Adversarial Attacks and Defense Strategies
In our previous article, we showed that neural networks are vulnerable to carefully crafted adversarial attacks, i.e. attacks based on minor modifications of the input. While those perturbations are often invisible to a human observer or perceived as noise that does not influence the recognition, they can fool even the most successful state-of-the-art neural network based systems. Thus, it is of great importance to be able to defend against such attacks, especially in safety-critical environments. Multiple techniques have been proposed over the last years to achieve this, including but not limited to: adversarial training, image preprocessing or transformation, and feature denoising. The most popular defense strategy is adversarial training. In this method, images are adversarially attacked with a chosen approach and perturbed examples are introduced to the model during the training process so that it learns to classify them correctly [1,2].

An article posted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has argued there is a'huge gap in understanding' between policymakers and AI creators. The report, authored by Adriana Bora, AI policy researcher and project manager at The Future Society, and David Alexandru Timis, outgoing curator at Brussels Hub, explores how to resolve accountability and trust-building issues with AI technology. Bora and Timis note there is "a need for sound mechanisms that will generate a comprehensive and collectively shared understanding of AI's development and deployment cycle." As a result, the two add, this governance "needs to be designed under continuous dialogue utilising multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary methodologies and skills." In plain language, both sides need to speak the same language.
