New Machine Learning Method Amplifies 'Voice of the People' to Reveal Workplace Culture
Human resources professionals and job seekers alike may soon be able to better understand a company's unique organizational culture thanks to a new machine-learning approach. Developed by Georgia Tech researchers, the approach is the first of its kind to computationally model organizational culture using publicly available anonymized data sources โ including Glassdoor user reviews. These models are illustrated using heat maps that reveal positive and negative sentiment for a company and its business units across 41 dimensions of organizational culture. The heat maps give a "cloud-contributed" sense of what a particular workplace culture is like and can provide actionable insights to HR teams, unit managers, and job seekers, according to the researchers. "Right now, to get a measure of organizational culture, companies rely on internal surveys, which are difficult to scale. It's also unlikely that they are getting true responses given factors like organizational bias or employee concerns about anonymity," said Vedant Das Swain, a second-year Ph.D. student studying human-computer interaction at Georgia Tech.
Signal Processing on the Permutahedron: Tight Spectral Frames for Ranked Data Analysis

Ranked data sets, where m judges/voters specify a preference ranking of n objects/candidates, are increasingly prevalent in contexts such as political elections, computer vision, recommender systems, and bioinformatics. The vote counts for each ranking can be viewed as an n! data vector lying on the permutahedron, which is a Cayley graph of the symmetric group with vertices labeled by permutations and an edge when two permutations differ by an adjacent transposition. Leveraging combinatorial representation theory and recent progress in signal processing on graphs, we investigate a novel, scalable transform method to interpret and exploit structure in ranked data. We represent data on the permutahedron using an overcomplete dictionary of atoms, each of which captures both smoothness information about the data (typically the focus of spectral graph decomposition methods in graph signal processing) and structural information about the data (typically the focus of symmetry decomposition methods from representation theory). These atoms have a more naturally interpretable structure than any known basis for signals on the permutahedron, and they form a Parseval frame, ensuring beneficial numerical properties such as energy preservation. We develop specialized algorithms and open software that take advantage of the symmetry and structure of the permutahedron to improve the scalability of the proposed method, making it more applicable to the high-dimensional ranked data found in applications.
Changing the Narrative Perspective: From Deictic to Anaphoric Point of View
We introduce the task of changing the narrative point of view, where characters are assigned a narrative perspective that is different from the one originally used by the writer. The resulting shift in the narrative point of view alters the reading experience and can be used as a tool in fiction writing or to generate types of text ranging from educational to self-help and self-diagnosis. We introduce a benchmark dataset containing a wide range of types of narratives annotated with changes in point of view from deictic (first or second person) to anaphoric (third person) and describe a pipeline for processing raw text that relies on a neural architecture for mention selection. Evaluations on the new benchmark dataset show that the proposed architecture substantially outperforms the baselines by generating mentions that are less ambiguous and more natural.

In its reasoning for the order, CBP said the level of monitoring required to secure America's long land borders from the sky was too cumbersome for people alone. To research and build the drones, CBP handed $500,000 to Mitre Corp., a trusted nonprofit Skunk Works that was already furnishing border police with prototype rapid DNA testing and smartwatch hacking technology. They were "tested but not fielded operationally" as "the gap from simulation to reality turned out to be much larger than the research team originally envisioned," a CBP spokesperson says. This year, America's border police will test automated drones from Skydio, the Redwood City, Calif.-based startup that on Monday announced it had raised an additional $170 million in venture funding at a valuation of $1 billion. That brings the total raised for Skydio to $340 million.

The Washington state Legislature, which has proposed legislation in the past to tackle issues such as data privacy and the use of facial recognition tech, is now reviewing a bill that would regulate the use of "automated decision systems" and AI technology within state government. According to the bill, these systems use algorithms to analyze data to help make or support decisions that could result in discrimination against different groups or make decisions that could negatively impact constitutional or legal rights. As a result, Senate Bill 5116 aims to regulate these systems to prevent discrimination and ban government agencies from using AI tech to profile individuals in public areas. Sen. Bob Hasegawa, one of the bill's sponsors, said in an email, "I introduced this bill after reading disturbing reports about the disproportionate impact that AI technology has on communities of color." "This technology is changing how we live our day to day lives, and it's important that we make sure it's not further deepening the inequities and discrimination in our society before we create a reliance on it," he said.

New treatments for Alzheimer's disease are desperately needed, but numerous clinical trials of investigational drugs have failed to generate promising options. Now a team at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) has developed an artificial intelligence-based method to screen currently available medications as possible treatments for Alzheimer's disease. The method could represent a rapid and inexpensive way to repurpose existing therapies into new treatments for this progressive, debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Importantly, it could also help reveal new, unexplored targets for therapy by pointing to mechanisms of drug action. "Repurposing FDA-approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease is an attractive idea that can help accelerate the arrival of effective treatment--but unfortunately, even for previously approved drugs, clinical trials require substantial resources, making it impossible to evaluate every drug in patients with Alzheimer's disease," explains Artem Sokolov, Ph.D., director of Informatics and Modeling at the Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology at HMS. "We therefore built a framework for prioritizing drugs, helping clinical studies to focus on the most promising ones."
