The trend came from having market insights and analysis. Everyone was adopting a method involving analytics, and those who were reluctant faced a major setback in company development and expansion. Initially, companies used Microsoft Excel or spreadsheets for the purpose. But soon there were a lot of tools to make the process easier.

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in โ€“ learning algorithms that thrive off big data; in fact, the more data these systems analyse, the more accurate they can be. In short, AI is the ability for a system to "think" in a limited way, working specifically on problems normally associated with human intelligence, such as pattern and speech recognition, translation and decision-making.


NASA's Ingenuity helicopter prepares for its first flight

Ingenuity, a small robotic helicopter currently attached to NASA's Perseverance rover, will attempt the first powered flight on another planet in just over a week. The 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft is attached to the belly of Perseverance, which touched down on Mars on February 18. Ingenuity is now'uncocooned' from its carbon-fibre shield that acted as a protective casing during landing, and is set for deployment from April 8, NASA says. Before it can track the first flight of an aircraft on the Red Planet, Perseverance needs to'drop off' Ingenuity in a clear, safe area that will become the first Martian helipad. Ingenuity carries a small amount of fabric that covered one of the wings of the Wright brothers' aircraft, known as the Flyer, during the first powered, controlled flight on Earth in 1903. Certifiably-Robust Federated Adversarial Learning via Randomized Smoothing

Federated learning is an emerging data-private distributed learning framework, which, however, is vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Although several heuristic defenses are proposed to enhance the robustness of federated learning, they do not provide certifiable robustness guarantees. In this paper, we incorporate randomized smoothing techniques into federated adversarial training to enable data-private distributed learning with certifiable robustness to test-time adversarial perturbations. Our experiments show that such an advanced federated adversarial learning framework can deliver models as robust as those trained by the centralized training. Further, this enables provably-robust classifiers to $\ell_2$-bounded adversarial perturbations in a distributed setup. We also show that one-point gradient estimation based training approach is $2-3\times$ faster than popular stochastic estimator based approach without any noticeable certified robustness differences.


Modelling Heterogeneity Using Bayesian Structured Sparsity

How to estimate heterogeneity, e.g. the effect of some variable differing across observations, is a key question in political science. Methods for doing so make simplifying assumptions about the underlying nature of the heterogeneity to draw reliable inferences. This paper allows a common way of simplifying complex phenomenon (placing observations with similar effects into discrete groups) to be integrated into regression analysis. The framework allows researchers to (i) use their prior knowledge to guide which groups are permissible and (ii) appropriately quantify uncertainty. The paper does this by extending work on "structured sparsity" from a traditional penalized likelihood approach to a Bayesian one by deriving new theoretical results and inferential techniques. It shows that this method outperforms state-of-the-art methods for estimating heterogeneous effects when the underlying heterogeneity is grouped and more effectively identifies groups of observations with different effects in observational data.


Robust Reinforcement Learning under model misspecification

Reinforcement learning has achieved remarkable performance in a wide range of tasks these days. Nevertheless, some unsolved problems limit its applications in real-world control. One of them is model misspecification, a situation where an agent is trained and deployed in environments with different transition dynamics. We propose an novel framework that utilize history trajectory and Partial Observable Markov Decision Process Modeling to deal with this dilemma. Additionally, we put forward an efficient adversarial attack method to assist robust training. Our experiments in four gym domains validate the effectiveness of our framework.

"In the old days, if you wanted to threaten the United States, you needed 10 aircraft carriers, and nuclear weapons, and long-range missiles. Today, you just need access to our Internet system, to our banking system, to our electrical grid and infrastructure, and increasingly, all you need is the ability to produce a very realistic fake video that could undermine our elections, that could throw our country into tremendous crisis internally and weaken us deeply," Forbes quoted him as saying.
