Its widely accepted that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will add trillions to global GDP in the next 20 years, making it the one of the world's most powerful technology trends on par with the disruption and opportunities being created by cloud computing and blockchain. So is Africa getting a slice of the lucrative artificial intelligence pie and what are the current AI adoption trends in the region? Although Africa's AI industry is still relatively small compared to the US, Europe and Asia, this has not stopped some of the continent's most innovative start-ups from developing solutions that demonstrate how promising the technology can be for the African economy. However, AI innovation in Africa is often ignored or overlooked because the number of patents applied for and the amount of research funding available is not well aligned with local contexts, data is missing, and the map still looks essentially bleak. Unravelling UK's AI Strategy To Bolster Its Defences

Meet Boston Dynamics' new robot, called Stretch

The new robot comes in the form of a mobile base equipped with a robotic arm and gripper. After having deployed the flagship robot dog Spot for a range of different applications, from factory floors to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, robotics company Boston Dynamics has added a brand-new specimen to its line of automatons, this time designed to move boxes around warehouses. Called Stretch, the new robot comes in the form of a mobile base equipped with a robotic arm and gripper, packed with smart sensors and controls that can identify and handle different boxes and shrink-wrapped cases. For now, Stretch's main ability consists of identifying, gripping, and unloading boxes off trucks, but according to Boston Dynamics, the robot will later expand into order building. The company is, therefore, making a debut in warehouse automation – understandably so, given the pace at which the field has accelerated over the course of the past year.

US leading race in artificial intelligence, China rising, EU lagging: survey

The United States is leading rivals in development and use of artificial intelligence while China is rising quickly and European Union is lagging, a research report showed Monday (25 January). The study by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation assessed AI using 30 separate metrics including human talent, research activity, commercial development and investment in hardware and software. The United States leads, with an overall score of 44.6 points on a 100-point scale, followed by China with 32 and the European Union with 23.3, the report based on 2020 data found. The researchers found the US leading in key areas such as investment in startups and research and development funding. But China has made strides in several areas and last year had more of the world's 500 most powerful supercomputers than any other nation -- 214, compared with 113 for the US and 91 for the EU.

While agencies today use AI to comb through and analyze piles of data and automate time-consuming processes, federal officials are aware they've only scratched the surface of AI's true capabilities and its most promising advances somewhere in the future. Federal agencies are preparing for that future with a series of strategic actions, both agency-specific and under the direction of the new administration. The Department of Health and Human Services, for example, created the position of "chief AI officer" in part to ascertain the ways the technology could improve mission delivery, culminating with an AI strategy for the agency. Along broader lines, the White House and Pentagon have launched hubs for AI research and policymaking that could dramatically impact how agencies and the military seek to procure and implement AI for years to come.


ENISA AI Threat Landscape Report Unveils Major Cybersecurity Challenges

Today, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) released its Artificial Intelligence Threat Landscape Report, unveiling the major cybersecurity challenges facing the AI ecosystem. ENISA's study takes a methodological approach at mapping the key players and threats in AI. The report follows up the priorities defined in the European Commission's 2020 AI White Paper. The ENISA Ad-Hoc Working Group on Artificial Intelligence Cybersecurity, with members from EU Institutions, academia and industry, provided input and supported the drafting of this report. The benefits of this emerging technology are significant, but so are the concerns, such as potential new avenues of manipulation and attack methods.
