The world of smart home audio definitely benefited from all this time we're spending indoors. Sonos has an eye on the future, though. We've just finished reviewing the $170 Roam, which Sonos pitches as a hybrid speaker for beach trips and vacations, and which also integrates with your at-home sound system. It also doesn't look like a giant kettlebell like Sonos' last attempt, the $400 (!) Move. According to Deputy Managing Editor Nathan Ingraham, it sounds good (and sounds even better in a stereo pair) and is as portable as the competition.


Blue Dot raises $32M for AI that helps companies comply with tax codes

The firm says it will put the funds toward product R&D and expanding the size of its globlal workforce. The tax compliance burden for enterprises can be significant. In 2019, half of companies responding to an EY Americas survey indicated that their biggest compliance challenge would be staying current on legislative and regulatory developments.


NASA's Perseverance rover snaps selfies of its 'head' and 'face'

NASA's Perseverance rover has sent back two selfies of its camera-laden'face' and'head' from the Jezero Crater on the surface of Mars. The two snaps show Perseverance's remote sensing mast, which hosts many of the rover's cameras and scientific instruments. They were taken with the SHERLOC WATSON camera, located on the turret at the end of the rover's robotic arm. Perseverance touched down on the Red Planet on February 18 after a nearly seven-month journey through space. It is tasked with seeking traces of fossilised microbial life from Mars' ancient past and to collect rock specimens for return to Earth through future missions to the Red Planet.

Just as a federated government system consists of a central government and smaller political entities, a federated learning algorithm collects data from several edge devices rather than from a single database. Federated learning involves training data and storing it locally. By eliminating the sharing of IoT data, it becomes secure. "Federated learning means you are learning by distributing the data to different stakeholders without revealing the identity and the sources of the data," Das says. He adds, "The algorithm itself gives the power because of the way we develop the algorithm. We are not sharing the entire data set and the content to every device or every stakeholder, and everybody only sees a partial view of it."


The Duo of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for Industry 4.0: Review of Applications, Techniques, Challenges, and Future Research Directions

The increasing need for economic, safe, and sustainable smart manufacturing combined with novel technological enablers, has paved the way for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data in support of smart manufacturing. This implies a substantial integration of AI, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Robotics, Big data, Blockchain, 5G communications, in support of smart manufacturing and the dynamical processes in modern industries. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of different aspects of AI and Big Data in Industry 4.0 with a particular focus on key applications, techniques, the concepts involved, key enabling technologies, challenges, and research perspective towards deployment of Industry 5.0. In detail, we highlight and analyze how the duo of AI and Big Data is helping in different applications of Industry 4.0. We also highlight key challenges in a successful deployment of AI and Big Data methods in smart industries with a particular emphasis on data-related issues, such as availability, bias, auditing, management, interpretability, communication, and different adversarial attacks and security issues. In a nutshell, we have explored the significance of AI and Big data towards Industry 4.0 applications through panoramic reviews and discussions. We believe, this work will provide a baseline for future research in the domain.


Herding stochastic autonomous agents via local control rules and online global target selection strategies

In this Paper we propose a simple yet effective set of local control rules to make a group of "herder agents" collect and contain in a desired region an ensemble of non-cooperative stochastic "target agents" in the plane. We investigate the robustness of the proposed strategies to variations of the number of target agents and the strength of the repulsive force they feel when in proximity of the herders. Extensive numerical simulations confirm the effectiveness of the approach and are complemented by a more realistic validation on commercially available robotic agents via ROS.


What Really Caused Facebook's 500M-User Data Leak?

Since Saturday, a massive trove of Facebook data has circulated publicly, splashing information from roughly 533 million Facebook users across the internet. The data includes things like profile names, Facebook ID numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers. It's all the kind of information that may already have been leaked or scraped from some other source, but it's yet another resource that links all that data together--and ties it to each victim--presenting tidy profiles to scammers, phishers, and spammers on a silver platter. Facebook's initial response was simply that the data was previously reported on in 2019 and that the company patched the underlying vulnerability in August of that year. But a closer look at where, exactly, this data comes from produces a much murkier picture.


Botched '60 Minutes' DeSantis story latest mainstream media hit piece on potential 2024 GOP contender

Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz joins'America Reports' to discuss the widely criticized CBS '60 Minutes' segment. A widely criticized "60 Minutes" report focusing on Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is the latest example of a mainstream media attack on the potential 2024 White House hopeful. Despite the Sunshine State's robust economy and a strong response to the coronavirus pandemic (Florida currently has the the 27th-most coronavirus deaths per capita despite being the third-most populous state in the Union), DeSantis has come under fire in the press for everything from partnering with the Publix grocery store chain on vaccinations, to getting shots to Holocaust survivors, to accusations of cooking the books, to keeping the state largely open during the pandemic, to running afoul of a Florida data scientist who was later arrested for hacking a state computer system. "This is partisan corporate media and I think at this point these people ... they're basically ambulance chasers with a microphone," DeSantis said on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday. We know they're lying, they know that we know that they're lying, and yet they lie and they lie and they lie." DeSantis, a strong ally of former President Donald Trump, is a potential contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In the "60 Minutes" segment, which aired Sunday, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi alleged DeSantis gave Publix lucrative rights to vaccine distribution in response to a $100,000 donation to his PAC. However, Publix and DeSantis vigorously disputed the piece's recycled narrative, and critics noted Publix was a natural fit for vaccine partnership given its more than 800 locations in the state. "That's a fake narrative," DeSantis told CBS News. "I met with the county mayor, I met with the administrator, I met with all the folks at Palm Beach County and I said, 'Here's some of the options: We can do more drive-thru sites, we can give more to hospitals, we can do the Publix.'

FDA greenlights Optellum's AI-powered software for early lung cancer diagnosis

The rapidly expanding field artificial intelligence (AI)-aided image analysis received a boost with the FDA 510(k) clearance for Optellum Ltd.'s Virtual Nodule Clinic, which helps clinicians evaluate small, potentially malignant lung lesions or nodules. The action makes Optellum's system the first cleared radiomic application for early lung cancer, an area of active research for the last five years.
