Army's new night vision goggles look like tech used in Halo video games

The US Army has high-powered night vision goggles that provide war fighters with the ability to pick out enemies in the dead of night, regardless of weather conditions. The military group's Lancer Brigade shared footage of the new Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binoculars in action, which shows glowing figures that some liken to those in the popular'Halo' video game. The system includes a new, high-resolution display and an embedded soldier wireless personal area network, rapid target acquisition and augmented reality algorithms to interface with the Army's Nett Warrior. Using the goggles, soldiers can keep their eyes on their target without looking down to read maps or check radios, as all information is shown on the display. More than 4,800 of the combat-ready devices are now in the hands of the US Army.

Counterfeiting is a big business. Nearly $509 billion of fake and pirated products were sold internationally in 2016. In that year, the latest for which data was available, counterfeit goods made up 3.3% of international trade, up from 2.5% three years earlier, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. That figure, which does not include domestic trade in fakes, not only means companies are losing revenue and consumers are not getting their money's worth; counterfeiting also helps fund organized crime. Because it skirts safety regulations, makers of counterfeits could use toxic materials or produce unsafe products.

On Earth, avoiding collisions is a key priority for traffic cops, air traffic controllers, and the parents of toddlers. It is no different in space--and perhaps even more critical--given that objects orbiting the Earth are moving at more than 17,000 m.p.h., which means that even very small objects less than a centimeter in diameter have caused damage to the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, and satellites. In fact, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) estimates there are more than 500,000 such objects orbiting the Earth that are larger than a marble, and at least a million smaller pieces of debris that cannot be tracked. Based on the growing number of commercial and government launches of spacecraft, satellites, and even space stations, the number of objects that will need to be catalogued, tracked, and managed is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. And the solutions to this issue are fraught with both technical and political challenges.

SpaceX's pivotal Starship SN15 launch will take place 'this week', Elon Musk says

SpaceX will soon make a fifth attempt to launch and land its Starship rocket, Elon Musk has revealed. The SpaceX boss confirmed that a static fire test of Starship SN15's Raptor engines was completed on Monday and that preparations were underway for a high-altitude flight "later this week". The rocket is already at the launchpad of SpaceX's Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, and local road closures are in place for Tuesday and Wednesday. SpaceX has also sought clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), while weather conditions appear to be favourable despite some moderate winds. Four previous successful launches of Starship prototypes have ended in unsuccessful landings.

The world is going through a cybersecurity pandemic. No day passes without a hack or data theft being carried out, discovered, or begrudgingly announced. High-profile victims abound – from the PlayStation Network, hacked in 2011, to Dropbox's 2012 breach, to the 500-million-user data theft Yahoo! suffered in 2014, two years before going public about the hack. Those carrying out the attacks have honed their craft to create ever more sophisticated hacking tools. According to a recent study by security consultancy Juniper Research, cybercrime is expected to balloon into a $2.1 trillion (£1.7 trillion) industry by 2019.

A driver of a car can be in many different emotional states while driving: calm, anxious, angry, excited, relaxed or drowsy are just a few. SRI International researchers are teaching vehicles how to read and respond to a driver's emotional state as part of a project with Toyota Motor Corporation. This project seeks to improve driving safety and personalize the interaction between a person and their car. These efforts center on integrating emotional artificial intelligence (AI) into cars. SRI scientists are making strides in this with the development of the Driver Monitoring System (DMS).


When Artificial Intelligence Discriminates

The FTC has issued Business Guidance about the use of artificial intelligence (AI), warning marketers about the danger of the potential discriminatory impact of automated decision-making. As the FTC noted, the use of AI "presents risks, such as the potential for unfair or discriminatory outcomes or the perpetuation of existing socioeconomic disparities." To illustrate the risk, the FTC's Guidance cites a study of an algorithm used to target medical interventions to the sickest patients that wound up funneling resources to a healthier, white population, to the detriment of sicker, black patients. The Guidance also cites a number of enforcement actions brought by the FTC and other government agencies under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Equal Credit Reporting Act, the Fair Housing Act, and more, where companies have used big data in misleading or discriminatory ways in their advertising, targeting practices or in their other interactions with consumers. To mitigate these risks, the FTC's Guidance recommends that companies using artificial intelligence tools be "transparent, explainable, fair, and empirically sound, while fostering accountability."


How AI Can Boost Disaster Response and Recovery

Artificial intelligence enables rapid analysis of satellite images to assess damage and priority areas. Building disaster-resistant cities is an important element in achieving the sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations. Data collected by the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters for natural disasters across occurrences shows the number of disasters across the globe has risen by 74.5%, comparing data from 1980–1999 with 2000–2019. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that the average global temperature has risen 0.85 degrees from 1880 to 2012 and is projected to rise further, affecting human society and the ecosystems. Remote sensing technology using satellite images is now being used to investigate post-disaster situations, and to formulate reconstruction plans.
