A new reason to swipe right? Dating apps adding vax badges

The White House is pushing a new reason to swipe right: vaccination badges and "super swipes" for people who've gotten their coronavirus shots. The Biden administration said Friday it's teaming up with dating apps to showcase the benefits of getting a shot. Apps like Hinge, Tinder, Match and Bumble are offering special incentives to people who roll up their sleeves, including badges showing vaccination status and free access to premium content. BLK and Chispa will boost profiles of those who are vaccinated, to make them more visible to potential matches. And OKCupid will even let users filter out potential partners based on whether they've gotten a vaccine.

For the past couple of years, renowned technologist and researcher Bruce Schneier has been researching how societal systems can be hacked, specifically the rules of financial markets, laws, and the tax code. That led him to his latest examination of the potential unintended consequences of artificial intelligence on society: how AI systems themselves, which he refers to as "AIs," could evolve such that they automatically - and inadvertently - actually abuse societal systems. "It's AIs as the hacker," he says, rather than hackers hacking AI systems. Schneier will discuss his AI hacker research in a keynote address on Monday at the 2021 RSA Conference, which, due to the pandemic, is being held online rather than in person in San Francisco. The AI topic is based on a recent essay he wrote for the Cyber Project and Council for the Responsible Use of AI at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School.


Adversarial Attacks and Mitigation for Anomaly Detectors of Cyber-Physical Systems

The threats faced by cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure have motivated research into a multitude of attack detection mechanisms, including anomaly detectors based on neural network models. The effectiveness of anomaly detectors can be assessed by subjecting them to test suites of attacks, but less consideration has been given to adversarial attackers that craft noise specifically designed to deceive them. While successfully applied in domains such as images and audio, adversarial attacks are much harder to implement in CPSs due to the presence of other built-in defence mechanisms such as rule checkers(or invariant checkers). In this work, we present an adversarial attack that simultaneously evades the anomaly detectors and rule checkers of a CPS. Inspired by existing gradient-based approaches, our adversarial attack crafts noise over the sensor and actuator values, then uses a genetic algorithm to optimise the latter, ensuring that the neural network and the rule checking system are both deceived.We implemented our approach for two real-world critical infrastructure testbeds, successfully reducing the classification accuracy of their detectors by over 50% on average, while simultaneously avoiding detection by rule checkers. Finally, we explore whether these attacks can be mitigated by training the detectors on adversarial samples.


Hypothesis Testing for Equality of Latent Positions in Random Graphs

We consider the hypothesis testing problem that two vertices $i$ and $j$ of a generalized random dot product graph have the same latent positions, possibly up to scaling. Special cases of this hypotheses test include testing whether two vertices in a stochastic block model or degree-corrected stochastic block model graph have the same block membership vectors. We propose several test statistics based on the empirical Mahalanobis distances between the $i$th and $j$th rows of either the adjacency or the normalized Laplacian spectral embedding of the graph. We show that, under mild conditions, these test statistics have limiting chi-square distributions under both the null and local alternative hypothesis, and we derived explicit expressions for the non-centrality parameters under the local alternative. Using these limit results, we address the model selection problem of choosing between the standard stochastic block model and its degree-corrected variant. The effectiveness of our proposed tests are illustrated via both simulation studies and real data applications.

"With the high velocity and volume of social media data, companies rely on tools to analyze data and to provide customer service. These tools perform tasks such as content management, sentiment analysis, and extraction of relevant messages for the company's customer service representatives to respond to," UCF Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, Dr. Ivan Garibay, told Engadget via email.

The nation's largest dating apps are hoping to make it easier for vaccinated singles to find one another, the White House announced Friday, part of the push to meet the Biden administration's goal of getting 70% of adults at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by July 4. The range of new features will allow users to be able to filter potential matches by their vaccination status, and also gain free access to premium features such as "boosts," "super likes" and "super swipes."

A bunch of companies have been giving away freebies to people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, and now dating apps are offering perks. The White House has teamed up with nine of the biggest dating sites around to encourage more people to get vaccinated. Tinder, OkCupid, Bumble, Badoo, BLK, Hinge, Chispa, Match and Plenty of Fish are all taking part, according to Axios. You'll be able to add a sticker or badge to your profile telling prospective matches that you've been vaccinated. The apps are giving away premium perks as well, like boosts and super swipes, which users usually need to buy on a pay-per-use basis.


European Space Agency reveals ambitious plans to build sat-nav around the moon

The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched an ambitious new project to build a sat-nav and communication satellite network in orbit around the moon. This new infrastructure could one day turn our natural satellite into the'eighth continent' as humanity spreads its wings and builds cities on the lunar surface. ESA says the project, known as Moonlight, will support the Lunar Gateway space station, multiple agencies working on moon missions and human exploration. In what will be the world's first commercial service of its kind, a number of British firms have won contracts to investigate how it might work, worth over £2 million. 'We are entering a new phase - the systematic exploration of our "eighth continent", the Moon,' ESA's David Parker told BBC News.
