British AI startup Faculty raises $42.5M growth round led by Apax Digital Fund – TechCrunch
British artificial intelligence (AI) company, Faculty has raised £30 million ($42.5M) in growth funding from the Apax Digital Fund (ADF). The startup has now raised a total of £40m ($56.6M) to date. In April this year, the company announced it had won a contract to work with the UK's NHS to better predict its future needs. It has also picked up at least seven other UK government contracts. Its customers include the UK's National Crime Agency, Red Bull, Virgin Media, and Moonpig.
Russia Is Accelerating Its Own Link-Everything Network
The United States isn't the only major military power trying to digitally link all of its weapons and execute operations faster with artificial intelligence. Russia has been making gains in its own version of centralized command and control across land, sea, space, and cyberspace, according to a new paper from a Navy-linked think tank. Over the past several years, Russian military leaders have steadily advanced an AI-linked concept called automated control systems, or ACS, says the paper, to be published Monday by the Center for Naval Analysis, or CNA. The Russian military's encyclopedia describes it as: "A system that automates such processes or functions of command and control of troops and (or) weapons (combat assets) such as: collection, processing, storage and delivery of information necessary to optimize command and control of troops and weapons." The concept bears an uncanny resemblance to the U.S. military's own vision for AI-fueled, network-centric operations.

Leveraging AI/ML, new version of MCA21 to be launched on Monday
A data analytics driven version of MCA21, which was India's first mission mode e-governance project, will be launched on Monday. This version MCA21 V 3.0 is expected to strengthen enforcement, promote ease of doing business, improve user experience and facilitate seamless integration and data exchange among regulators. MCA 21 is the online portal of Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA) that has made all company-related information accessible to various stakeholders and general public. It was initially launched in 2006. While presenting the Budget for 2021-22, Union Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the government will use data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning to launch MCA 21 3.0, which will add the facility of e-scrutiny, e-consultation, e-adjudication and compliance management among others.

For them, more views mean more money and so they've optimized their algorithms to maximize engagement. Views are the algorithms' "reward function" -- the more views the algorithms can attract to the platform the better. When an algorithm promotes a given post and sees an upsurge of views, it will double down on the strategy, selectively timing, targeting and pushing posts in ways that it has found will stimulate further sharing, a process called reinforcement learning.
New AI Regulations Are Coming. Is Your Organization Ready?
Over the last few weeks, regulators and lawmakers around the world have made one thing clear: New laws will soon shape how companies use artificial intelligence (AI). In late March, the five largest federal financial regulators in the United States released a request for information on how banks use AI, signaling that new guidance is coming for the finance sector. Just a few weeks after that, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released an uncharacteristically bold set of guidelines on "truth, fairness, and equity" in AI -- defining unfairness, and therefore the illegal use of AI, broadly as any act that "causes more harm than good." The European Commission followed suit on April 21 released its own proposal for the regulation of AI, which includes fines of up to 6% of a company's annual revenues for noncompliance -- fines that are higher than the historic penalties of up to 4% of global turnover that can be levied under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For companies adopting AI, the dilemma is clear: On the one hand, evolving regulatory frameworks on AI will significantly impact their ability to use the technology; on the other, with new laws and proposals still evolving, it can seem like it's not yet clear what companies can and should do.
