NASA's autonomous lunar vehicle will be made by GM and Lockheed Martin
NASA is assembling a crack team of private companies to help it return humans to the Moon for the first time since 1972. After assigning SpaceX the task of the lunar landing, the agency is turning its attention to surface transportation. NASA has picked General Motors and regular defence contractor Lockheed Martin to develop the Artemis program's lunar vehicles. The overarching goal is to enable astronauts to travel further on the Moon than ever before. That's not an easy ask when you're dealing with rocky lunar terrain pocked with asteroid impact craters and dead volcanoes. NASA's checklist already dictated that the vehicles must be electric and support autonomous driving.
GPT-3's ability to 'write disinformation' is being wildly overstated by the media
GPT-3, the highly-touted text generator built by OpenAI, can do a lot of things. For example, Microsoft today announced a new AI-powered "autocomplete" system for coding that uses GPT-3 to build out code solutions for people without requiring them to do any developing. But one thing the technology can not do is "dupe humans" with its ability to write misinformation. Yet, you wouldn't know that if you were solely judging by the headlines in your news feed. Wired recently ran an article with the title "GPT-3 can write disinformation now โ and dupe human readers," and it was picked up by other outlets who then reflected the coverage.

The AI can recognise 288 skin conditions but is not designed to be a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment. As well as using images, the app also requires patients to answer a series of questions. Google says there are 10 billion searches for skin, hair and nail issues every year. The AI for this tool has been optimised to avoid missing "alarming or scary" conditions such as skin cancer, although erring on the side of caution means lots of people will be advised to check out something that will turn out to be benign.

How AI May Soon Help Hackers Steal Your Information
Renowned cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier told a conference recently that he's concerned that AI penetration of computer systems is inevitable. Experts say that AI attacks are a growing threat. "With AI becoming increasingly helpful from a hacking perspective, the data of users and consumers may be significantly more at risk," Andrew Douglas, a cybersecurity expert at Deloitte Risk & Financial Advisory, said in an email interview. "Hackers typically look for the easiest target with the least amount of effort, and AI would allow them to target more people with better defenses in less time." Schneier was the latest to sound the alert over the dangers of AI. "Any good AI system will naturally find hacks," Schneier reportedly said at the recent conference. "They find novel solutions because they lack human context, and the consequence is that some of those solutions will break the expectations humans have--hence, a hack."
California County Hopes Artificial Intelligence Can Mitigate Wildfire Risk
At this time of year, periodic rain showers on the north coast of California give way to months of daily sunshine and a wildfire risk that grows in severity until the next fall rains arrive. In Sonoma County, a new set of eyes is watching over the forest. Those eyes will be able to tap into an artificial intelligence program to make sure emergency dispatchers are alerted to actual fires instead of mist rising off the forest floor or steam from the region's numerous natural geysers. The county has entered into a $300,000 contract with South Korea technology firm Alchera to provide artificial intelligence software that can alert fire dispatchers to the precise location of flames or smoke. The two-year pilot project is funded through $3 million in hazard mitigation grants that the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded to the county.
Drones may have attacked humans fully autonomously for the first time
Military drones may have autonomously attacked humans for the first time ever last year, according to a United Nations report. While the full details of the incident, which took place in Libya, haven't been released and it is unclear if there were any casualties, the event suggests that international efforts to ban lethal autonomous weapons before they are used may already be too late. The robot in question is a Kargu-2 quadcopter produced by STM, a Turkish firm.

A recent patent application has proposed a system for identifying'aggressive driving behavior' at junctions using machine learning algorithms deployed in civic edge computing devices. In contrast to recent innovations of AI research into in-vehicle'road rage' analytics (primarily intended for the benefit of insurance companies), the system proposed is instead municipal in nature, and could be aimed at facilitating penalties for drivers that are not conforming to the ambient norms of'safe' driver behavior. It is also specifically intended to provide bad drivers with related in-car audiovisual alerts. The patent was filed at the US Patent and Trademark Office on 29th April 2021 on behalf of the Board Of Regents of the University of Michigan, and the Denso corporation, a Japanese automotive components manufacturer owned by Toyota. The UMich patent is not a proprietary, in-car system aimed at insurance oversight, nor designed solely to produce forensic data, but rather relies on well-resourced edge computing nodes deployed at traffic intersections to provide immediate and actionable feedback, by collating data from roadside edge computing resources and from sensors installed in nearby vehicles.
NHTSA pulls driver assist designations for 'Tesla Vision' cars
On Tuesday Tesla announced that Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for the US are now shipping without radar sensors, since they'll rely solely on Tesla Vision to enable various driver assists. According to Elon Musk, improved vision processing makes cameras a better option than radar, although we'll see if that holds up in the winter or other poor weather conditios. At the same time, Tesla said that for now, those new vehicles will have limitations to features like Auto Summon, Smart Steer and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance. Autosteer will be limited to a maximum speed of 75 mph and a longer minimum following distance. Smart Summon (if equipped) and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance may be disabled at delivery.

Nearly two-thirds of C-level AI leaders can't explain how specific AI decisions or predictions are made, according to a new survey on AI ethics by FICO, which says there is room for improvement. FICO hired Corinium to query 100 AI leaders for its new study, called "The State of Responsible AI: 2021," which the credit report company released today. More than two thirds of survey-takers say the processes they have to ensure AI models comply with regulations are ineffective, while nine out of 10 leaders who took the survey say inefficient monitoring of models presents a barrier to AI adoption. Seeing as how the regulatory environment is still developing, it's concerning that 43% of respondents in FICO's study found that "they have no responsibilities beyond meeting regulatory compliance to ethically manage AI systems whose decisions may indirectly affect people's livelihoods," such as audience segmentation models, facial recognition models, and recommendation systems, the company said. At a time when AI is making life-altering decisions for their customers and stakeholders, the lack of awareness of the ethical and fairness concerns around AI poses a serious risk to companies, says Scott Zoldi, FICO's chief analytics officer.
