Adversarial attacks in machine learning: What they are and how to stop them - JackOfAllTechs.com
Adversarial machine learning, a technique that attempts to fool models with deceptive data, is a growing threat in the AI and machine learning research community. The most common reason is to cause a malfunction in a machine learning model. An adversarial attack might entail presenting a model with inaccurate or misrepresentative data as it's training, or introducing maliciously designed data to deceive an already trained model. As the U.S. National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence's 2019 interim report notes, a very small percentage of current AI research goes toward defending AI systems against adversarial efforts. Some systems already used in production could be vulnerable to attack.

"If we don't, we'll be looking at a future where other values will be imposed on us."

Artificial Intelligence used at sea for first time
This Operational Experiment (OpEx) on the Type 45 Destroyer (HMS Dragon) and Type 23 Frigate (HMS Lancaster), is using the A.I. applications, Startle and Sycoiea, which were tested against a supersonic missile threat. As part of the Above Water Systems programme, led by Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) scientists, the A.I. improves the early detection of lethal threat, accelerates engagement timelines and provide Royal Navy Commanders with a rapid hazard assessment to select the optimum weapon or measure to counter and destroy the target. It's vital that our brave and highly skilled Armed Forces stay ahead of the game for the security of the United Kingdom and our allies. The Royal Navy's use of A.I. for the first time at sea is an important development in ensuring readiness to tackle threats we may face. I'm proud to see that two Scottish built Royal Navy vessels are at the heart of this exercise in the waters off the Hebrides.
IQVIA partners with Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA)
US-headquartered IQVIA is the latest health information technology and clinical research company to partner with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), it has been announced. The multinational โ described as "a leading global provider of advanced analytics, technology solutions, and clinical research services to the life sciences industry" โ has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Saudi government agency to "explore opportunities of mutual interest and support innovation in the field of health data in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)." According to the country's official news agency, both parties will reportedly collaborate on joint ideas and research in data and artificial intelligence (AI), build a centre for "innovation and knowledge", and develop training programmes that can make use of this data and AI in the health sector. The agreement was co-signed by Majid Mohammed Al-Tuwaijri, supervisor of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) at the SDAIA; and Mohamed Mostafa Elbadawy, IQVIA's General Manager for KSA and Egypt. "This MoU will contribute towards creating opportunities for development and growth in the health sector, supporting the goals of Vision 2030," said Al-Tuwaijri.
New Artificial Intelligence program begins at Ferris
A 15-month schedule is underway to develop Ferris State University's $29.5 million Center for Virtual Learning on the Big Rapids campus.The future facility, planned for the site of the former Vandercook Hall, will be home to Information Security and Intelligence, the School of Digital Media, School of Education, eLearning and the new Artificial Intelligence program. The state of Michigan will contribute $22 million for the Center for Virtual Learning's construction as a capital outlay project. In December 2020, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Public Act awarding the funds, and Ferris' Board of Trustees approved construction plans in February. At that same meeting, the trustees approved a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Faculty members involved in the Center for Virtual Learning's development see the project's collaborative nature as benefiting future student learning.

BENGALURU: Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani said India is on the cusp of major artificial intelligence (AI) innovations, and Indian companies should look to apply AI to areas such as healthcare, education and judicial systems. Nilekani said a by-product of the UPI transactional system set up by the government is the huge trove of data across systems. Building good AI systems require vast amounts of data. "Both the business side and the government side are well placed to apply AI in a unique way," said Nilekani, speaking at an event organised by industry body Nasscom. Asked if AI can help India make another breakthrough application like Aadhaar or UPI, he said that the National Translation Mission to translate Indian languages is a disruption from India in the language category.
Machine learning accelerates cosmological simulations
A universe evolves over billions upon billions of years, but researchers have developed a way to create a complex simulated universe in less than a day. The technique, published in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, brings together machine learning, high-performance computing and astrophysics and will help to usher in a new era of high-resolution cosmology simulations. Cosmological simulations are an essential part of teasing out the many mysteries of the universe, including those of dark matter and dark energy. But until now, researchers faced the common conundrum of not being able to have it all -- simulations could focus on a small area at high resolution, or they could encompass a large volume of the universe at low resolution. Carnegie Mellon University Physics Professors Tiziana Di Matteo and Rupert Croft, Flatiron Institute Research Fellow Yin Li, Carnegie Mellon Ph.D. candidate Yueying Ni, University of California Riverside Professor of Physics and Astronomy Simeon Bird and University of California Berkeley's Yu Feng surmounted this problem by teaching a machine learning algorithm based on neural networks to upgrade a simulation from low resolution to super resolution.

How Alan Turing Invented the Computer Age
In 1936, whilst studying for his Ph.D. at Princeton University, the English mathematician Alan Turing published a paper, "On Computable Numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem," which became the foundation of computer science. In it Turing presented a theoretical machine that could solve any problem that could be described by simple instructions encoded on a paper tape. One Turing Machine could calculate square roots, whilst another might solve Sudoku puzzles. Turing demonstrated you could construct a single Universal Machine that could simulate any Turing Machine.
