Thales and Atos create the European champion in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for Defence and Security

Atos and Thales announce the creation of Athea, a joint venture that will develop a sovereign big data and artificial intelligence platform for public and private sector players in the defence, intelligence and internal state security communities. Athea will draw on the experience gained by both companies from the demonstration phase of the ARTEMIS programme, the big data platform of the French Ministry of Armed Forces. The contract to optimise and prepare the full-scale roll-out of the ARTEMIS platform was also awarded jointly to the two leaders by the French Defense Procurement Agency on April 30, 2021. The new joint venture will initially serve the French market before addressing European requirements at a later date. With the exponential rise in the number of sources of information, and increased pressure to respond more quickly to potential issues, State agencies need to manage ever-greater volumes of heterogeneous data and accelerate the development of new AI applications where security and sovereignty are key.


Space debris punctures International Space Station's robotic arm

The International Space Station has been hit with a piece of orbital debris, leaving a sizeable hole in its 17 metre-long robotic arm. Experts from the Canadian Space Agency and Nasa found the puncture during a routine inspection of Canadarm2. The arm performs station maintenance, moves supplies – and even astronauts – and performs "cosmic catches" by grappling visiting crafts and bringing them to the ISS. The inspection, which took place on 12 May, found that the puncture came from a piece of space debris that was too small to be tracked – which accounts for rock or dust particles to flecks of paint from satellites, the CSA says. Any object the size of a football or larger can be tracked.


ISS' Robotic Arm Damaged After Getting Hit By Orbital Debris

An important part of the International Space Station (ISS) been damaged after getting hit by orbital debris. The damage doesn't appear to be substantial, but it shows the threat posed by such "junk." The damage was discovered during an inspection of the ISS' Canadarm2 on May 12, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) said in a statement. Canadarm2 is the CSA's contribution to the ISS and is essentially a robotic arm that performs various important tasks, from moving supplies and even astronauts to grabbing visiting vehicles then berthing them to the ISS. Images of the hit show small damage, but it was quite a "lucky strike," considering that Canadarm2 only has a diameter of 14 inches.

Researchers have switched on the world's fastest AI supercomputer

Researchers have switched on the world's fastest AI supercomputer, delivering nearly four exaFLOPS of AI performance for more than 7,000 researchers. Perlmutter, officially dedicated today at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Centre (NERSC), is a supercomputer that will help piece together a 3D map of the universe, probe subatomic interactions for green energy sources, and much more. The supercomputer is made up of 6,159 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, which makes it the largest A100-powered system in the world. Over two dozen applications are getting ready to be among the first to use the system based at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. In one project, the supercomputer will help assemble the largest 3D map of the visible universe to date.


To Defeat Advanced Anti-Ship Missiles, Royal Navy Turns to AI

The Royal Navy is using artificial intelligence for the first time at sea in a bid to defeat missile attacks. Leading-edge software is being tested at sea against live missiles during the largest exercise of its type off the coasts of Scotland and Norway. Involving more than 3,000 military personnel, exercise Formidable Shield tests the ability of NATO warships to detect, track and defeat incoming missiles, from sea-skimming weapons traveling at twice the speed of sound to ballistic missiles. Three Royal Navy warships are taking part in the exercise, which runs until early June: destroyer HMS Dragon and two frigates, Lancaster and Argyll. HMS Lancaster and Dragon are trialing artificial intelligence and machine learning applications which offer a glimpse of the future of air defence at sea.

Network and Physical Layer Attacks and countermeasures to AI-Enabled 6G O-RAN

Abstract--Artificial intelligence (AI) will play an increasing role in cellular network deployment, configuration and management. This paper examines the security implications of AI-driven 6G radio access networks (RANs). While the expected timeline for 6G standardization is still several years out, pre-standardization efforts related to 6G security are already ongoing and will benefit from fundamental and experimental research. The Open RAN (O-RAN) describes an industry-driven open architecture and interfaces for building next generation RANs with AI control. Considering this architecture, we identify the critical threats to data driven network and physical layer elements, the corresponding countermeasures, and the research directions. The steady increase in the number of connected devices and the heterogeneous types of communications performance demands have driven the wireless business and research and development (R&D) efforts.
