What Is Surveillance Communism?
I just released a blog yesterday about a concept that I believe was coined by Professor Zuboff, called surveillance capitalism. This is basically where corporations with the implementation of artificial intelligence are able to track your online viewing and shopping habits, making educated suggestions to you based off the mining of such data. And it has led to a number of extremely serious ethical concerns. In line with that, I want to speak today about how artificial intelligence has been used in the introduction of what's called surveillance communism. This, at least given my background and research, is far more terrifying; but if the two could be combined in some politico-economic system, it would be perhaps one of the most dystopian realities a person could conceive.

Many stakeholders are coming to terms with the fact that AI can be a force of evil too. According to BCG, over 90% of cybersecurity professionals in the US and Japan expect attackers to start using AI to launch attacks. And this is, in fact, becoming a reality already. COMSovereign to Acquire RVision, Inc., Expanding Smart City Capabilities
COMSovereign Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: COMS) ("COMSovereign" or "Company"), a U.S.-based developer of 4G LTE Advanced and 5G Communication Systems and Solutions, today announced that it has executed an agreement to acquire RVision, Inc. ("RVision"), a developer of technologically advanced, environmentally hardened video and communications products and physical security solutions designed for government and private sector commercial industries. Terms of the transaction include total consideration of approximately $5.58 million consisting exclusively of shares of restricted common stock. The transaction is expected to close within approximately 15 days subject to traditional closing conditions. Smart Cities and Smart Campuses (educational and industrial) are urban areas designed to integrate advanced technologies including IoT ("Internet of Things"), AI ("Artificial Intelligence"), machine learning, Big Data, and sustainable or "green" energy systems to benefit and secure the daily lives of its residents. Around the world today, these technologies are being deployed to efficiently improve public services and safety through enhancements to everything from mass transportation and waste management to the real-time monitoring of environmental conditions including air and water quality.

AI and Misinformation: How Artificial Intelligence Works on Both Sides
One of the growing problems today is misinformation: the proliferation of fake news and misleading content across social media platforms. While artificial intelligence (AI) helps in its spread, there has been growing proof of how it can be used to curb this problem. However, more than just the daily news article, misinformation has far-reaching - and often fearsome - implications in more critical fields such as cybersecurity, public safety, medicine, and even science. In fact, there have been published collaborative papers, one appearing in the April 2021 issue of PNAS, tackling misinformation as a result of common human biases and prevailing practices in the critique and release of scientific papers. This even includes respected, peer-reviewed journals.
Breaking Down the World's First Proposal for Regulating Artificial Intelligence
Today, artificial intelligence and machine learning tools are ubiquitous across sectors--used for everything from determining an individual's credit worthiness to enabling law enforcement surveillance--and rapidly evolving. Despite this, few nations have rules in place to oversee these systems or mitigate the harms they could cause. On April 21, the European Commission released a draft of its proposed AI regulation, the world's first legal framework addressing the risks posed by artificial intelligence. The draft regulation makes some notable strides, prohibiting the use of certain harmful AI systems and reining in harmful uses of some high-risk algorithmic systems. However, the Commission's proposed regulation displays gaps which, if not addressed, could limit its effectiveness in holding some of the biggest developers and deployers of algorithmic systems accountable.
DoD Policy Calls for "Responsible AI" in Defense Procurements of Artificial Intelligence
As the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) seeks to increase funding for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for defense and national security purposes, a new policy memorandum directs the DoD to take steps to ensure that AI is designed, developed, and deployed in a responsible manner. In a May 26, 2021, memorandum titled "Implementing Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Defense," Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks calls for the incorporation of responsible AI principles into the DoD's AI requirements and acquisition processes. Ms. Hicks wrote: "As the DoD embraces [AI], it is imperative that we adopt responsible behavior, processes, and outcomes in a manner that reflects the Department's commitment to its ethical principles, including the protection of privacy and civil liberties." The memorandum outlines six "foundational tenets" for the DoD to implement "Responsible AI" across the DoD. It also reaffirms the DoD's AI Ethical Principles and confirms that they apply to all DoD AI capabilities of any scale, including AI-enabled autonomous systems.
Meet Wu Dao 2.0, the Chinese AI model making the West sweat
A new artificial intelligence model developed by Chinese researchers is performing untold feats with image creation and natural language processing -- making rivals in Europe and the U.S. nervous about falling behind. The model, dubbed Wu Dao 2.0, is able to understand everything people say -- the grammar too -- but can also recognize images and generate realistic pictures based on descriptions. It can also write essays and poems in traditional Chinese, as well as predict the 3D structures of proteins, POLITICO'S AI: Decoded reported. Developed by the government-funded Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence and unveiled last week, Wu Dao 2.0 appears to be among the world's most sophisticated AI language models. Wu Dao 2.0's creators say it's 10 times more powerful than its closest rival GPT-3, developed by the U.S. firm OpenAI.
The Double Exploitation of Deepfake Porn
Over the past three years, celebrities have been appearing across social media in improbable scenarios. You may have recently caught a grinning Tom Cruise doing magic tricks with a coin or Nicolas Cage appearing as Lois Lane in Man of Steel. Most of us now recognize these clips as deepfakes--startlingly realistic videos created using artificial intelligence. In 2017, they began circulating on message boards like Reddit as altered videos from anonymous users; the term is a portmanteau of "deep learning"--the process used to train an algorithm to doctor a scene--and "fake." Deepfakes once required working knowledge of AI-enabled technology, but today, anyone can make their own using free software like FakeApp or Faceswap. All it takes is some sample footage and a large data set of photos (one reason celebrities are targeted is the easy availability of high-quality facial images) and the app can convincingly swap out one person's face for another's.
