DARPA, the U.S. military's research division, is about to host a virtual dogfight where simulated F-16 fighter jets duke it out in a virtual environment to find out which is the, uh, top gun. It's all part of an initiative to develop AI algorithms that could replace -- or at the very least assist -- fighter pilots during combat, Popular Science reports. And this all-AI deathmatch is just the first step: on Thursday morning, the winning algorithm will face off against a human pilot steering a virtual F-16. The program bears a striking resemblance to Skyborg, an Air Force initiative with similar goals. Skyborg quickly rose in prominence as military leaders grew excited about autonomous fighter jets, but then quickly pivoted to other goals like swarm drones when the Air Force realized that it was perhaps too ambitious.

When the Federal Communication Commission asked the public what it thought about its net neutrality rules in 2017, the comments flooded in--including millions submitted under fake names by bot-comment-generators. These missives added no value and raised concerns that people's identities were being stolen. Now everyone from Congressional Republicans to the New York State Attorney General have their sights set on shutting down the bots. But anxiety about the risks of computer-generated comments might go too far. We don't want to allow overblown fears to squelch the development of future killer apps that could improve public participation in regulatory decision making.

European Union data protection regulators have called for a general ban on using artificial intelligence for facial recognition and other "biometric and behavioral signals" in public spaces. In their joint opinion, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) also said using AI for social scoring should be outlawed. The EDPB and EDPS urged the bloc to prohibit AI "recognition of faces, gait, fingerprints, DNA, voice, keystrokes and other biometric or behavioral signals, in any context" in publicly accessible areas. They said it should be illegal for AI systems to use biometrics to categorize people "into clusters based on ethnicity, gender, political or sexual orientation," or other types of classification under which they could be discriminated against. On top of that, the EDPB and EDPS argued that there should be a ban on using AI to "infer emotions of a natural person." It would be allowed in specific situations, such as on certain medical grounds.
