Government and business can develop an ethical AI future together, KPMG study finds

#artificialintelligence

The pandemic turned the world upside down and businesses stepped up to the challenge, accelerating their digital transformation and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to help overcome new challenges in a new world. A new study by KPMG, Thriving in an AI World: Unlocking the Value of AI across 7 Industries," found that while some executives are experiencing a bit of COVID-19-induced whiplash as they reckon with AI challenges, industry leaders are optimistic about the new administration's role in helping to achieve an AI-forward future. "We reached out to decision-makers, many of whom said AI is moving too fast, but many also felt that the U.S. is being left behind when it comes to AI adoption," says Swami Chandrasekaran, managing director at the KPMG Digital Lighthouse and Head of Digital Solutions Architecture. Yet overwhelmingly, industry leaders believe the Biden administration will not only help advance the adoption of AI, they also believe the government has an ...

How Will the Post-Pandemic World Deal With Disability?

Slate

For most people living through the latest pandemic, the urgent questions are often "when questions." When indoor establishments should lift capacity limits. When mask requirements should be dropped. When family, friends, and strangers should reconnect across household lines. For millions of other people, the question is more like whether. Whether there ever will be an opening. Whether they will be welcome participants. Whether the reengineered social relationships for post-pandemic life will include them. Because when the physical world is utterly open, the social world can be closed to these people.

The Recent Developments Towards AI Regulation

#artificialintelligence

You can find a video review of this topic at the bottom of the article. Recently the EC released a proposal for a legal framework to regulate artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, it seems to still be quite far from what we need. If you're new here my name's Bobby, I'm am a tech entrepreneur and business advisor based in the Netherlands. On this channel, I explore the strategies and tools that help us understand technology and build better business ventures. Today I look at quite a controversial topic -- the recent development in the regulatory space towards building a legal framework for artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence used on Army operation for the first time

#artificialintelligence

Soldiers from the 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade used an AI engine which provides information on the surrounding environment and terrain. Through the development of significant automation and smart analytics, the engine is able to rapidly cut through masses of complex data. Providing efficient information regarding the environment and terrain, it enables the Army to plan its appropriate activity and outputs. The deployment was a first of its kind for the Army. It built on close collaboration between the MOD and industry partners that developed AI specifically designed for the way the Army is trained to operate.

An Actual Space Laser Shows How Devastating Sea Level Rise May Be

Mother Jones

This story was originally published by Wired and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. An actual space laser is cruising 300 miles above your head right now. Launched in 2018, NASA's ICESat-2 satellite packs a lidar instrument, the same kind of technology that allows self-driving cars to see in three dimensions by spraying lasers around themselves as they roll down the street and analyzing the light that bounces back. But instead of mapping a road, ICESat-2 measures the elevation of Earth's surface with extreme accuracy. Although this space laser means you no harm, it does portend catastrophe. Today in the journal Nature Communications, scientists describe how they used ICESat-2's new lidar data to map the planet's land that's less than 2 meters above sea level, which makes it vulnerable to the creep of sea level rise.

California teenager invents AI-powered tool for early wildfire detection

#artificialintelligence

The world is indeed lucky when our most brilliant minds choose to work for the common good, rather than chasing money or becoming master criminals. So Inhabitat wants to thank young Ryan Honary for his work on an early detection system for wildfires. Sickened by the losses people sustained in the 2018 Camp Fire, California's deadliest wildfire, Honary turned his attention to how to mitigate future disasters. In 2019, Honary won the $10,000 grand prize in the Ignite Innovation Student Challenge for his Early Wildfire Detection Network submission, which provides app technology to firefighters. He was only in fifth grade at the time.
