Afghan robotics team arrives safely in Doha: 'The girls rescued themselves'

The original six girls on the team became known as the "Afghan Dreamers" when they captured the world's attention in 2017, arriving in Washington for an international robotics competition after facing long odds to gain entry to the United States. They endured a 500-mile journey from their homes in Harat to an embassy in Kabul where they were twice denied visas and later had their robot kit confiscated by the Afghan government in the months before the competition.


Towards Personalized and Human-in-the-Loop Document Summarization

The ubiquitous availability of computing devices and the widespread use of the internet have generated a large amount of data continuously. Therefore, the amount of available information on any given topic is far beyond humans' processing capacity to properly process, causing what is known as information overload. To efficiently cope with large amounts of information and generate content with significant value to users, we require identifying, merging and summarising information. Data summaries can help gather related information and collect it into a shorter format that enables answering complicated questions, gaining new insight and discovering conceptual boundaries. This thesis focuses on three main challenges to alleviate information overload using novel summarisation techniques. It further intends to facilitate the analysis of documents to support personalised information extraction. This thesis separates the research issues into four areas, covering (i) feature engineering in document summarisation, (ii) traditional static and inflexible summaries, (iii) traditional generic summarisation approaches, and (iv) the need for reference summaries. We propose novel approaches to tackle these challenges, by: i)enabling automatic intelligent feature engineering, ii) enabling flexible and interactive summarisation, iii) utilising intelligent and personalised summarisation approaches. The experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed approaches compared to other state-of-the-art models. We further propose solutions to the information overload problem in different domains through summarisation, covering network traffic data, health data and business process data.

Photojournalist documents the reality women face in Afghanistan on'America Reports' An Oklahoma mother of 11 flew to Qatar earlier this month to help rescue 10 members of Afghanistan's all-girls robotics team, and is hoping to save more as the Taliban takes power in Kabul. Allyson Reneau, a 60-year old-Harvard graduate with a Masters degree in international relations and U.S. space policy, took it upon herself to try and save members of the Afghan Girls Robotic Team, according to NBC. She flew into Qatar on Aug. 9 after making a "Hail Mary" call to a former roommate at the U.S. Embassy there to help get the girls from the advancing Taliban, known for their oppressive treatment of women. Reneau had been in contact with the team -- made of girls ages 16 to 18 -- since 2019, when she worked on the board of directors for Explore Mars and met the girls when they attended the organization's annual Humans to Mars conference. The team was hailed in Western media as the future of the war-ravaged country, as well as a shining example of how women's rights had improved after the U.S. invaded following 9/11.


AI accountability: Who's responsible when AI goes wrong?

AI systems sometimes run amok. One chatbot, designed by Microsoft to mimic a teenager, began spewing racist hate speech within hours of its release online. Microsoft immediately took the bot down. Another system, which Amazon designed to help its recruiting efforts but ultimately didn't release, inadvertently discriminated against female applicants. Other so-called "smart" systems have led to false arrests, biased bail amounts for criminal defendants, and even fatal car crashes. Experts expect to see more cases of problematic AI as organizations increasingly implement intelligent technology, sometimes doing so without adopting the proper governance in place.

A new study published in the journal PLOS One revealed a link between a person's body type and their family's earnings. According to the study's findings, physically appealing people are likely to earn more than those who aren't. According to researchers, the beauty premium is a reality. However, a University of Iowa associate professor and his colleagues found that the metrics employed to assess physical attractiveness had some severe shortcomings. Most earlier studies frequently defined physical appearance from subjective evaluations based on surveys. In addition, these metrics are too simplistic to provide a thorough description of body forms.

The First Step Toward Protecting Everyone Else From Teslas

After spending years looking into 30 separate Tesla crashes, this week federal safety officials finally took a step toward cracking down on the electric carmaker. On Monday, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration announced an investigation into Autopilot, Tesla's driver assistance system, which allows the vehicle to manage certain highway tasks like changing lanes and moderating speed, and which numerous drivers have treated like a fully autonomous driving system (sometimes for the entertainment of their social media followers). NHTSA's new investigation has a narrow focus: It will seek to determine why Teslas with Autopilot engaged have crashed at least 11 times into stationary first-responder vehicles. Depending on what the agency concludes, NHTSA could declare a "defect" in Autopilot, insisting that Tesla correct it or else face a hefty fine. NHTSA's power over the automotive sector shouldn't be underestimated; the agency's investigation in Takata's faulty airbags helped push the multi-billion dollar company into bankruptcy in 2017.
