Subway Passengers in Moscow Will Be Able to Pay for the Ride With Their Faces
Soon there will be no need for a passenger of the Moscow subway to pause in front of the turnstiles and frantically search their pockets for a transit card or ticket. Starting from Oct. 15, a glance at the camera will open the pay gate. On Wednesday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that the Face Pay system will soon be available at all subway stations (about 300). To be able to use it, commuters register in the Moscow subway app, upload a photo of their face, and attach their bank card. Once the user approaches turnstiles, the camera recognizes the face (even if the person is wearing a mask), the fare is debited from their account, and the pay gate opens.
Hewlett-Packard Just Got $2 Billion to Make an AI Surveillance System for the NSA
Domestic surveillance programs may be in for an AI upgrade. The National Security Agency of the United States just awarded a $2 billion contract to Hewlett Packard Enterprise to develop high-performance computing power that the agency will use to reach its data analytics and artificial intelligence needs, according to a Wednesday statement from the company. However, it's important to keep in mind that the NSA has repeatedly pushed for access to private information from telecommunications companies and internet servers, which could mean a major upgrade is in store for the surveillance of ordinary people. During the course of the 10-year contract, the NSA will pay to employ HSE's computing technology, which will also build a new platform that will blend the company's ProLiant servers with its Apollo data storage system. Combined, the new system will "ingest and process high volumes of data, and support deep learning and artificial intelligence capabilities," read the company press release.

Australia debuts 'Orwellian' new app using facial recognition, geolocation to enforce quarantine
The government of South Australia has implemented a new policy requiring Australians to use an app with facial recognition software and geolocation to prove that they are abiding by a 14-day quarantine for travel within the country. While a conservative policy expert described the policy as "Orwellian," he told Fox News that it represents an improvement over the current COVID-19 policy. Australia has banned international travel unless residents have a permit to leave the country. The country has also severely restricted travel between the six states of Australia. Residents must spend 14 days in quarantine upon return.
CB Insights reveals 2021 cohort of 100 most-promising AI companies
One way to gauge the deployment of artificial intelligence in the marketplace is to track CB Insights' top 100 most-promising private AI companies to watch. The firm released its annual list this week, culled from over 6,000 companies. "This year's cohort spans 18 industries, and is working on everything from climate risk to accelerating drug R&D," said CB Insights CEO Anand Sanwal in a press release. The products the companies are bringing to market range from revenue-cycle management for hospitals to autonomous beekeeping and municipal waste sortation, the firm said in a blog post, highlighting "the breadth and depth of AI's impact on industries." The synthetic data platform AI.Reverie made its second appearance on the AI 100 list.

As the Perseverance rover drilled into a rock on Wednesday to collect a sample from Jezero Crater on Mars, Justin Simon, a planetary scientist at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, felt both nervous and excited. He has the honor of serving as the "sample shepherd," leading the effort from millions of miles away, but the pressure's on. "These samples not only will allow us to understand the geology of the crater, but also minerals likely related to the history of water there," he said yesterday. But first, the rover had to actually capture a chunk of rock in a test tube-sized container. An initial attempt in early August had come up empty.

"Starting after middle age, say around 60 or so, memory and other abilities decline," says Dilip Jeste, professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at UC San Diego and director of the UCSD Center for Healthy Aging. But what actually declines--and what abilities might improve, as well as when, how, and at what speed--is a complex issue. It turns out, according to a new study in Nature Human Behavior, that many things improve with age, including some cognitive aspects that had previously been thought to get worse. John Verssimo, of the University of Lisbon, and his colleagues, looked at a large sample of people between the ages of 58 and 98 and measured their performance on a broad range of cognitive tasks to get a more detailed picture of cognitive aging.

Scientists have long aimed to discover meaningful equations which accurately describe data. Machine learning algorithms automate construction of accurate data-driven models, but ensuring that these are consistent with existing knowledge is a challenge. We developed a methodology combining automated theorem proving with symbolic regression, enabling principled derivations of laws of nature. We demonstrate this for Kepler's third law, Einstein's relativistic time dilation, and Langmuir's theory of adsorption, in each case, automatically connecting experimental data with background theory. The combination of logical reasoning with machine learning provides generalizable insights into key aspects of the natural phenomena.
