NATO defense ministers on Friday approved the alliance's first strategy on artificial intelligence and the establishment of the NATO Innovation Fund. NATO allies signed an agreement on setting up the alliance's first Innovation Fund, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced following the second day of the NATO defense ministerial meeting. "NATO's new innovation fund will ensure us to not miss out on the latest technology and capabilities that will be critical to our security," he added. The initiative, financed by 17 NATO member states, will support research and development on emerging and disruptive technologies with over $1 billion. NATO defense ministers also adopted the alliance's first Artificial Intelligence Strategy that sets the standards for the use of this technology with the respect of international law.

The Air Force Research Laboratory, in partnership with United Kingdom's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), have demonstrated for the first time the ability for the U.S. and the U.K. to jointly develop, select, train and deploy state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms in support of the armed forces of each of the two nations. This research is designed to support adjacent, collaborating U.S. and U.K. brigades with enduring wide-area situational awareness, which aims to improve decision-making, increase operational tempo, reduce risk to life and reduce manpower burden. The in-person, virtual demonstration was hosted jointly at AFRL's Information Directorate in Rome and Dstl at its site near Salisbury, U.K., Oct. 18. The demonstration highlighted integrated AI technologies across the two nations, showcasing the ability to share data and algorithms through a common development and deployment platform to enable the rapid selection, testing and deployment of AI capabilities. The event was made possible by a U.K. and U.S. partnership agreement concerning autonomy and AI collaboration established in December 2020.

Lt. Gen. Michael Groen, director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) and a 2021 Wash100 Award recipient, said that artificial intelligence's first cyber defense aspect begins with network security, DOD News reported Friday. The Department of Defense is shifting its mindset on networks and architecture because these play a significant role in warfighting and must be treated as weapons, Groen said at a cybersecurity summit. "We have to plan to protect them, make them resilient because everything that we're going to do in an artificial intelligence or data-driven way will depend on the security [of] those networks," he added. JAIC is working with the U.S. Cyber Command on various efforts to apply AI in network protection--a mission that Groen expects to expand rapidly in the coming years. But to adopt AI integration in the military, he said the department will field through an "incremental approach" by using AI to address small-scale issues first and later on develop other AI-backed strategies to improve processes in the service.

Italy is accelerating on artificial intelligence (AI). The government is set to publish its new strategy: on October 11th a meeting of the Interministerial Committee for Digital Transition (made up by the Ministries for the Digital Transition, Economic Development and Education) approved a draft of the final document. Prime Minister Mario Draghi himself announced the turning point to the Senate. This strategy, he said on Wednesday, will be "the framework for improving the country's competitive positioning." The 27-page document outlines a roadmap from 2022 to 2024 and is divided in two parts: an assessment of the Italian public-private ecosystem and an indication of the sectors requiring urgent intervention.

It won't be in the Olympics anytime soon but Oki Mek considers artificial intelligence "a team sport." As the chief artificial intelligence officer for the Department of Health and Human Services, Mek may be a little biased, but as his agency works through its AI strategy -- released in January -- collaboration and knowledge exchange will be paramount. We describe the acceleratoroperation, related Machine Learning research, the prediction performance required to abort beamwhile maintaining operations, the monitoring device and its data, and the Siamese method andits results. These results show that the researched method can be applied to improve acceleratoroperations.
