Delta Air Lines partners with TSA PreCheck to launch biometrics-based bag drops – TechCrunch
Delta Air Lines, in partnership with TSA PreCheck, today announced an expansion of how it uses biometrics to let passengers drop their bags, go through security and board their plane by simply showing their face. For now, the newest part of this, the PreCheck bag-drop experience, is a pilot that's only available in Atlanta and for Delta's SkyMiles frequent flier program members who are also registered for TSA pre-check. The project builds and expands upon the work the airline has done at its Detroit hub and for its international flights out of Atlanta. But now it includes a facial recognition-powered bag-drop experience, too. In Atlanta, where Delta and the TSA are running this pilot, members of Delta's SkyMiles frequent flier program who are also TSA pre-check members now get their own self-service PreCheck bag-drop area.
US Copyright Office eases DMCA restrictions to allow for more device repairs
The statute prohibits the circumvention of software copy protection and has been the target of right to repair advocates for years. As one example, it adopts a recommendation from Public Knowledge and iFixit that involves video game consoles. It says "the repair of software-enabled consumer devices is likely to be fair use, the Register finds that certain video game console repair is also likely fair use." It notes consumers can access the firmware on their systems as long as it's with the intention of fixing the device's optical drive and they restore any protective measures afterward. The rulemaking stops short of protecting non-consumer devices.

The Vatican is worried about artificial intelligence
At a recent conference on the challenges of artificial intelligence, Christof Koch made clear in his remarks that the stakes were high: "By mid-century, humanity will be surrounded by ubiquitous, flexible, highly intelligent autonomous agents, and this will profoundly affect our future--including whether we have any." Dr. Koch--who is the chief scientist of the Mindscope Program at the Allen Institute for brain science in Seattle--was speaking to a group of roughly a hundred academics, diplomats and journalists. The conference was hosted by the Vatican at the Cancelleria, a 15th-century Renaissance palace in Rome, and centered around the theme of "the challenge of artificial intelligence for human society and the idea of the human person." This was the second event at the Vatican to focus on artificial intelligence, commonly abbreviated as A.I. Just before Italy entered into a nationwide lockdown last year, the Pontifical Academy for Life held a workshop on A.I. in February 2020. This workshop ultimately produced a "Call for AI Ethics," which was signed by Microsoft, IBM, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and the Italian government, in addition to the Academy.

NHS trial will test AI diagnosis with eye scans from 150,000 patients
Eye scans from 150,000 National Health Service (NHS) patients in the UK will be used to test commercial artificial intelligence tools that could be rolled out to spot the warning signs of diabetic sight loss. But researchers aim to avoid a repeat of previous NHS data-sharing scandals by ensuring that records are anonymised and that AI tests are only run on servers owned by NHS trusts.
FDA Convenes Medical Device Workshop Focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Transparency
On October 14, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA" or the "Agency") held a virtual workshop entitled, Transparency of Artificial Intelligence ("AI")/Machine Learning ("ML")-enabled Medical Devices. The workshop builds upon previous Agency efforts in the AI/ML space. Back in 2019, FDA issued a discussion paper and request for feedback called, Proposed Regulatory Framework for Modifications to AI/ML-Based Software as a Medical Device ("SaMD"). To support continued framework development and to increase collaboration and innovation between key stakeholders and specialists, FDA created the Digital Health Center of Excellence in 2020. And, in January 2021, FDA published an AI/ML Action Plan, based, in part, on stakeholder feedback to the 2019 discussion paper.
