Working of algorithms used in government decision-making to be revealed
Ministers and public bodies must reveal the architecture behind algorithms that influence exam results, housing benefit allocations and pothole repairs, under new transparency standards. The UK government has published a transparency standard for algorithms, the series of instructions that a computer follows to complete a task or produce a single outcome. Algorithms have become the focus of increasing controversy, whether through their role in deciding A-level results last year or making decisions about benefit claims. Under the new approach, government departments and public sector bodies will be required to explain where an algorithm was used, why it was used and whether it achieved its aim. There will also be an obligation to reveal the architecture behind the algorithm. It will be tested by several government departments and public sector bodies in the coming months before being reviewed again and formally launched next year.

Probe in drone attack on Iraq PM yet to identify attackers
Baghdad, Iraq โ An investigation committee probing the drone attack on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi earlier this month has felt short on identifying the attackers but released a video footage detailing the events. On Monday, almost three weeks into the investigation, national security adviser Qasim al-Araji said in a news conference that the committee has not accused any specific person or entity but called for collaboration among different parties to further the investigation. According to al-Araji, apart from the drone that caused damage at the prime minister's residence, there was also an unexploded projectile with fingerprints on it but the bomb squad detonated it without collecting the fingerprints. "We have launched an investigation into this matter and are asking for justification on the decision to not collect fingerprints," said al-Araji, adding that both drones were "locally made". No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Why Adversarial Image Attacks Are No Joke
Attacking image recognition systems with carefully-crafted adversarial images has been considered an amusing but trivial proof-of-concept over the last five years. However, new research from Australia suggests that the casual use of highly popular image datasets for commercial AI projects could create an enduring new security problem. For a couple of years now, a group of academics at the University of Adelaide have been trying to explain something really important about the future of AI-based image recognition systems. It's something that would be difficult (and very expensive) to fix right now, and which would be unconscionably costly to remedy once the current trends in image recognition research have been fully developed into commercialized and industrialized deployments in 5-10 years' time. New NHS imaging resource assists AI in Covid fight
Published today in the Open-Access, Open-Data journal GigaScience is the National COVID-19 Chest Imaging Database (NCCID), a centralised database containing chest X-rays, Computed Tomography (CT) and MRI scans from patients across the UK. Utilising the unique position as the world's single largest integrated healthcare system, the benefits of collecting chest imaging data this large are extensive and already being used by doctors and the research community. The database is already supporting the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered image processing software and diagnostic products and models being used to predict COVID-19 mortality in the UK. And also has the potential to become a long-term resource for teaching radiologists. These efforts provide the potential to enable faster patient assessment in Accident and Emergency, save clinicians time, and increase the safety and consistency of care across the UK. With the GigaScience paper describing how to access this Open Data resource, the NCCID training data is available to users anywhere in the world, including software developers, academics and clinicians, via a rigorous Data Access Request process.
