When Tony Stark needs to travel to space in the original Iron Man movie, he asks his artificial intelligent (AI) assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. to make a suit that can survive harsh conditions. As AI specialist Kamal Choudhary explains: "The way I see it, what J.A.R.V.I.S. did is, it had a database of materials, scanned the database, found a suitable material, tested it, then synthesized an alloy that could survive space conditions. "That's what we want our system to do, and that's why we called it JARVIS." Choudhary, a researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is the founder and developer of JARVIS (Joint Automated Repository for Various Integrated Simulations)--an open dataset designed to automate materials discovery and optimization. Writing in npj Computational Materials in December 2021, Choudhary and Brian DeCost (NIST) described the latest enhancements to JARVIS that apply AI to speed discovery. Combining graph neural networks with chemical and structural knowledge about materials, their Atomistic Line Graph Neural Network (ALIGNN) outperforms previously reported models on atomistic prediction tasks with very high accuracy and better or comparable model training speed. "ALIGNN can predict characteristics in seconds instead of months," Choudhary said. Beyond the inspiration from Iron Man, there was the Materials Genome Initiative. Originated in 2011 under President Obama, the initiative is a multi-federal agency effort to discover, manufacture, and deploy advanced materials twice as fast and at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. NIST's original contribution to the initiative was the creation of a database of materials and their characteristics, obtained rigorously, using standardized, cutting-edge computing methods. Several such databases have been established, but "what's particular about the JARVIS database is that it contains modules for various kinds of computational approaches," according to David Vanderbilt, professor of physics at Rutgers University, member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a contributor to the project. "There are many different theoretical levels on which you can approach the field.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning, contributed positively to enhancing the autonomous systems industry, along with introducing social, technical, legal and ethical challenges to make them trustworthy. Although Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) is an established and growing research direction that has been discussed in multiple disciplines, e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Law, and Psychology. The impact of TAS on education curricula and required skills for future TAS engineers has rarely been discussed in the literature. This study brings together the collective insights from a number of TAS leading experts to highlight significant challenges for curriculum design and potential TAS required skills posed by the rapid emergence of TAS. Our analysis is of interest not only to the TAS education community but also to other researchers, as it offers ways to guide future research toward operationalising TAS education.

Elon Musk's brain chip company Neuralink is defending itself against claims that its researchers abused monkeys in the testing of its products. Neuralink โ€“ which hopes to create a revolutionary interface that would allow humans to control devices with their brains โ€“ said in a statement on Monday that its research animals were "respected and honored by our team". The company was responding to allegations that the animals were tortured and left to die in horrific experiments at its facilities. In a lengthy complaint filed with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) said the research caused "extreme suffering" in its test subjects, who "had their brains mutilated in shoddy experiments and were left to suffer and die". PCRM is a non-profit advocacy organization that promotes a plant-based diet and alternatives to animal testing.

The simulator is sure to give users a serious upper body workout, particularly so when it comes to the neck muscles, but any fans interested will have to splash out ยฃ100,000 ($135,450) to experience the full system for themselves. A stripped-down version, called the GFQ Simulator, is priced at ยฃ16,400 ($22,234). The F1-style bit of kit was made by Axsim, a sub-brand of a company called Cranfield Simulation, which is itself a subsidiary of UK-based Cranfield Aerospace Solutions.

The world is built on the idea that numbers can't be wrong; that data is objective and only works if it's good enough to be there. Furthermore, systems do not have their own virtuous minds. Instead, they invent an explanation depending on the information provided to them. Instead, they make up a reason based on the data that they are given. We tend to forget that these codes are based on one's own biases, experiences, and attitudes.
