Humans struggle to distinguish between real and AI-generated faces
According to a new paper, AI-generated faces have become so advanced that humans now cannot distinguish between real and fake more often than not. "Our evaluation of the photorealism of AI-synthesized faces indicates that synthesis engines have passed through the uncanny valley and are capable of creating faces that are indistinguishable--and more trustworthy--than real faces," the researchers explained. Video, audio, text, and imagery generated by generative adversarial networks (GANs) are increasingly being used for nonconsensual intimate imagery, financial fraud, and disinformation campaigns. The generator will start with random pixels and will keep improving the image to avoid penalisation from the discriminator. This process continues until the discriminator can no longer distinguish a synthesised face from a real one.

There is fair amount of excitement and hype about the ongoing emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the potential promise of the technology in improving diagnostic accuracy and increasing workflow efficiencies in radiology. However, as Nina Kottler, MD, points out in a recent video interview with Diagnostic Imaging, there are challenges as well when it comes to assessment and implementation of AI into one's practice. While there are "hundreds of FDA-cleared and approved algorithms in radiology alone," she notes that it is "early on in the maturity of the technology of AI with respect to health care" so choosing the right AI vendor for your practice is critical. While technical prowess is important, 80 percent of what an AI vendor does is help create the workflow around the algorithm to ensure it works well, according to Dr. Kottler, the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Clinical AI and VP of Clinical Operations at Radiology Partners. Dr. Kottler says cultural alignment is an important consideration as you are seeking a vendor that values your input as a radiologist and is on a similar wavelength with you on future directions of AI in radiology. High-tech AI trial to fill vacancies
High-tech artificial intelligence (AI) is to be rolled out at a Kent Jobcentre as part of a six-month nationwide trial to marry jobseekers with local vacancies. The Government-backed match-making service will start in March at 20 selected sites across England and Scotland - with Maidstone the only place in Kent included. It forms part of the Government's Way to Work campaign which aims to get 500,000 people back into work. The technology will pose a series of questions to those seeking work to build up an online profile - this will then be fed into the software, described as'cutting-edge' by Government chiefs, to point jobseekers in the right direction to existing vacancies or towards a local skills'bootcamp'. It will not, however, be mandatory.
US Navy plans launch of Middle East drone force with allies
The United States Navy announced the launch of a new joint fleet of unmanned drones in the Middle East with allied nations to patrol vast swaths of volatile waters as tensions simmer with Iran. Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, who leads the 5th Fleet, said 100 unmanned drones, both sailing and submersible, would dramatically multiply the surveillance capacities of the US Navy, allowing it to keep a close eye on waters critical to the flow of global oil and shipping. Trade at sea has been targeted in recent years as Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers collapsed. "By using unmanned systems, we can just simply see more. They're high reliability and remove the human factor," Cooper said on the sidelines of a defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi, adding the systems are "the only way to cover on whatever gaps that we have today".

AI gets a free pass for another year as EU and US stall on regulation
UK and EU governments are throwing themselves on the proverbial tram track that is AI ethical standards. The European Commission (EC) has already drafted some laws to regulate the use of AI, but reports suggest it'll take up to a year to actually get them in place. Right now, we're amid the crossfire in the AI badlands. The law is seemingly being pushed aside while new AI applications are established all over, wholly unregulated. According to Reuters (via AI News), two lawmakers involved with the EU's proceedings said the debate is tied up on whether facial recognition should be banned, and over who has the right to preside over the rules, and keep the AI in check.It's a similar situation in the US where there is still no federal regulation of artifical intelligency, but there is reportedly some US AI regulation "on the horizon." It will apparently take a different form, however, where the detailed framework the EC has proposed is exchanged for an agency-by-agency approach.The previous draft from the European Commission established some classifications for AI, depending on the level of risk that each system might pose to us as a species. These range from 'limited risk systems' such as chatbots and spam filters, right up to those of 'unacceptable risk'—i.e. anything exploitative, manipulative, or that might "conduct real-time biometric authentication in public spaces for law enforcement."That all sounds very Orwellian, but when we've got DeepMind training AIs to control nuclear fusion, you'd think facial recognition would be the least of our worries.'High risk' AI systems will be required to undergo heavy vetting, and be on some tight reigns in order to operate within the law. Regulations could include anything from human oversight, to mandatory risk management systems, or government registration. Any system deemed high risk will likely require some intense record keeping and logging, in case anything goes awry, and potentially for full disclosure of such records transparency to users.It seems at least that video game AI is poised for inclusion in the limited risk category, but who knows whether that will get bumped up a rung once everyone bails on reality, and makes the exodus into the metaverse.
