Cyberattacks are increasing and affect thousands of organizations and millions of people in the U.S. alone. These challenges underscore the need for better ways to stem the tide of cyber-breaches. Artificial intelligence is particularly well suited to finding patterns in huge amounts of data.

As I sunk my teeth into the slightly gummy, peanut-buttery bite being passed around the classroom, my mind flashed between the grim food futures presented in science fiction novels and the much smaller collection of hopeful fiction portrayals of delicious future feasts. What is it about our contemporary anxieties that makes it so easy to imagine such dystopic food futures?
DARPA Issues Solicitation for Utility-Scale Quantum Computer Concepts - GovCon Wire
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is seeking novel approaches to building a utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer through the Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing program. "If there's an underexplored area of quantum computing showing promise for a faster breakthrough than we previously expected, we want to explore it immediately and thoroughly verify and validate the approach's viability," Joe Altepeter, US2QC program manager at DARPA's defense sciences office, said in a statement published Tuesday. The US2QC program will focus on assessing the viability of approaches to utility-scale quantum computing and its initial phase โ Phase 0 โ will allow participants to present a design concept of their planned quantum computer. "There's no one verification and validation program that fits all the different quantum computing approaches out there," Altepeter said. "That means we don't know what follow-on phases will look like or how long they'll be. Identifying key milestones will be unique for each project depending on how the Phase 0 validation and verification goes. If the proposed concept proves to be sound, Phase 0 could be very short. As teams meet follow-on phase milestones unique to their approach, we'll keep scaling the effort up."

Conflicting directives cause confusion in machinery cyberworld - Agriland.ie
While the farm machinery industry is busy trumpeting news of all the latest digital gadgetry it is bringing to market, the EU is equally busy sowing confusion over the legislation surrounding these developments. In its latest position paper on the planned directives, CEMA โ the association representing the European agricultural machinery industry โ has pinpointed several problems with the proposals which it feels will be detrimental to the industry. The first point raised is the absence of any strict definition of artificial intelligence (AI) and the term'safety function', both of which are critical components of the directives. There are two directives in the pipeline which cover the implementation of AI installed in farm machinery. The first is the general regulatory framework for AI, while the second is the machinery directive itself. It should be noted that both cover all industries and not just agriculture, and that machinery is considered to be powered equipment fitted with a tool to carry out specific tasks.

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will establish centres for transformational artificial intelligence in partnership with academia and industry to develop AI-based solutions, said a senior officer from MeitY. While announcing the establishment of a fund of funds to provide financial support to startups at all stages of growth, Abhishek Singh, head of Digital India Corporation and the National e-Governance Division said that India has a large number of AI-skilled soldiers. Speaking at an industry event in Delhi, he said: "While significant AI research is being conducted at all of our academic institutions, we continue to fall far behind China and the United States in terms of AI research. Certain measures have been taken, but we must continue." Singh also said that the Department of Science and Technology, as part of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, has established Technology Innovation Hubs (NM-ICPS).

Government to set up centres for transformational artificial intelligence
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday said it will set up centres for transformational artificial intelligence (AI) that will collaborate with academia and industry to develop AI-based solutions. Addressing a virtual'AI India Conclave', organised by FICCIi jointly with MeitY, Abhishek Singh, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Digital India Corporation (DIC), President and CEO, National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and, CEO, MyGov, MeitY, said that AI skilling and reskilling and its role in employment generation is important and highlighted the various initiatives launched by the government pertaining to AI. "To foster a robust AI ecosystem in India, the government's role is to enable a data governance mechanism via open data portals, with adequate safeguards for privacy to enable innovation by researchers and entrepreneurs to build upon and create products for better services," he said. A lot of AI research is being done in all academic institutions, but still the country lags far behind China and the US when it comes to AI research, he said, adding that'there are certain initiatives that have been taken but we need to go further'. Singh said the Department of Science and Technology too has set up Technology Innovation Hubs under National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. "But under the national programme on AI what is being thought of is that the India centres for transformational AI will be set up. These centres will be set up in partnership with the industry and academia. The solution which is developed from the exercise will be assessed for scaling up across the country," Singh added.
