New AI test that can diagnose conditions in 20 seconds to be rolled out on the NHS
An AI test that can detect heart disease in just 20 seconds, with a much higher degree of accuracy than existing methods, will be rolled out on the NHS after a successful pilot. The tool analyses heart MRI scans as they happen โ compared to the 13 minutes it takes for a doctor to check them manually under the existing system. For now, radiologists using the AI tool will continue to double-check the results and write up the report themselves โ but the diagnosis will be completed much quicker as the underlying analysis will have already been done. This means the typical two to four-week waiting time for the result could be reduced by about a third, as the time freed up by the technology enables radiologists to get to it sooner, according to project leader Dr Rhodri Davies, of University College London and St Bartholomew's Hospital. And he predicts that in the next five to 10 years we could see the waiting time speed up even more, as human input may be dropped altogether in favour of an AI-only analysis. AI Weekly: DARPA seeks to better align AI with human intentions
Did you miss a session at the Data Summit? This week in AI, DARPA, the emerging technologies R&D agency of the U.S. Defense Department, launched a new program that aims to "align" AI systems with human decision-makers in domains where there isn't an agreed-upon right answer. Elsewhere, two prominent cofounders from LinkedIn and DeepMind, Reid Hoffman and Mustafa Suleyman, announced a new AI startup called Inflection AI that seeks to develop software that allows humans to talk to computers using everyday language. In a press release describing the new three-and-a-half-year program, DARPA says that the goal is to "evaluate and build trusted algorithmic decision-makers for mission-critical Department of Defense operations." Dubbed "In the Moment," or ITM, it focuses on the process of alignment -- building AI systems that accomplish what they're expected to accomplish.
Military drone likely flying from Ukraine crashes in Croatia
A drone that apparently flew all the way from the Ukrainian war zone has crashed on the outskirts of the Croatian capital, Zagreb, triggering a loud blast but causing no injuries, according to Croatian authorities. A statement issued on Friday after Croatia's National Security Council meeting said the "pilotless military aircraft" entered Croatian airspace overnight from neighbouring Hungary at a speed of 700 kilometres per hour (430mph) and an altitude of 1,300 metres (4,300 feet). The council said that an official criminal investigation will be launched and that NATO will be informed about the incident. The crash means that the large drone flew at least 560km (350 miles) apparently undetected by air defences in Croatia and Hungary, both members of the Western military alliance. Military experts of The War Zone online magazine said that the aircraft is likely a Soviet-era Tu-141 Strizh reconnaissance drone that must have severely malfunctioned and crossed over the entirety of Hungary and into Croatia from Ukraine.
What do we know about Ukraine's use of Turkish Bayraktar drones?
During Russia's war on Ukraine, video footage has circulated on the internet showing the Turkish combat drone Bayraktar TB2 successfully striking the Russian army. But as so often during heightened conflicts, it is hard to distinguish between factual events and misinformation โ some videos of the drone attacks have already been exposed as the latter. Given the chaotic events on the ground, it is almost impossible to assess how often and how successfully Ukraine has utilised its Turkish drones so far, Mauro Gilli, senior researcher in military technology and international security at ETH Zurich, told Al Jazeera. "There have been some video footages allegedly showing the employment of the TB2. Of course, information at this point is fragmented, and it needs to be taken with caution. "We do know that Ukraine bought some TB2 over the past years and that Turkey and Ukraine signed an agreement for the production within Ukrainian borders of the TB2 โ but, as far as I know, production had not started yet.
Mysterious Drone That Crashed In Croatia May Have Got Lost Over Ukraine: Report
An "unidentified flying object" that crashed in the Croatian capital Zagreb on Thursday may have been a malfunctioned reconnaissance drone that flew off course from Ukraine, said reports. Images of the wreckage, which appeared to be aircraft parts, lying inside a crater have been making the rounds on social media. Analysis of the wreckage suggests the craft may be a Tu-141 "Strizh" reconnaissance drone from Ukraine, The Drive reported. The drone may have gone haywire before crossing Hungary and crashing in Croatia, which is 350 miles away from Ukraine. However, International Business Times could not independently verify the information.

Combining Deep Learning with Physics Based Features in Explosion-Earthquake Discrimination

This paper combines the power of deep-learning with the generalizability of physics-based features, to present an advanced method for seismic discrimination between earthquakes and explosions. The proposed method contains two branches: a deep learning branch operating directly on seismic waveforms or spectrograms, and a second branch operating on physics-based parametric features. These features are high-frequency P/S amplitude ratios and the difference between local magnitude (ML) and coda duration magnitude (MC). The combination achieves better generalization performance when applied to new regions than models that are developed solely with deep learning. We also examined which parts of the waveform data dominate deep learning decisions (i.e., via Grad-CAM). Such visualization provides a window into the black-box nature of the machine-learning models and offers new insight into how the deep learning derived models use data to make the decisions.
