Artificial intelligence is getting cheaper, better at the tasks we assign it, and more widespread--but concerns over bias, ethics, and regulatory oversight still remain. At a time when AI is becoming accessible to everyone, Stanford University put together a sweeping 2022 report analyzing the ins and outs of the growing field. Here are some of the highlights. The number of publications alone on the topic tell a story: They doubled in the last decade, from 162,444 in 2010 to 334,497 in 2021. The most popular AI categories that researchers and others published on were pattern recognition, machine learning, and algorithms.


AI Index Report 2022: Powerful models toxic as ever

AI systems are becoming increasingly larger and complex, but despite the technology's progress, they exhibit higher levels of toxic behaviors, according to the latest AI Index Report. The 2022 report, the development of which was led by Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered AI, analyses how machine learning affects research and development, economies, and policy-making across the world. One trend highlighted by the study, now in its fifth year, that will probably remain in vogue for the foreseeable future, is that neural networks are getting bigger. There are now language models with hundreds of billions and even trillions of parameters trained on terabytes of text scraped from the internet. These massive systems can complete all sorts of tasks, from generating content to helping developers code, to a degree. They have become more powerful and potentially more harmful.

The video, which shows a rendering of the Ukrainian president appearing to tell his soldiers to lay down their arms and surrender the fight against Russia, is a so-called deepfake that ran about a minute long. It is not yet clear who created the deepfake, but government officials in Ukraine have been warning for weeks about the possibility of Russia spreading manipulated videos as part of its information warfare.


Strategic Maneuver and Disruption with Reinforcement Learning Approaches for Multi-Agent Coordination

Reinforcement learning (RL) approaches can illuminate emergent behaviors that facilitate coordination across teams of agents as part of a multi-agent system (MAS), which can provide windows of opportunity in various military tasks. Technologically advancing adversaries pose substantial risks to a friendly nation's interests and resources. Superior resources alone are not enough to defeat adversaries in modern complex environments because adversaries create standoff in multiple domains against predictable military doctrine-based maneuvers. Therefore, as part of a defense strategy, friendly forces must use strategic maneuvers and disruption to gain superiority in complex multi-faceted domains such as multi-domain operations (MDO). One promising avenue for implementing strategic maneuver and disruption to gain superiority over adversaries is through coordination of MAS in future military operations. In this paper, we present overviews of prominent works in the RL domain with their strengths and weaknesses for overcoming the challenges associated with performing autonomous strategic maneuver and disruption in military contexts.


GAM(L)A: An econometric model for interpretable Machine Learning

Despite their high predictive performance, random forest and gradient boosting are often considered as black boxes or uninterpretable models which has raised concerns from practitioners and regulators. As an alternative, we propose in this paper to use partial linear models that are inherently interpretable. Specifically, this article introduces GAM-lasso (GAMLA) and GAM-autometrics (GAMA), denoted as GAM(L)A in short. GAM(L)A combines parametric and non-parametric functions to accurately capture linearities and non-linearities prevailing between dependent and explanatory variables, and a variable selection procedure to control for overfitting issues. Estimation relies on a two-step procedure building upon the double residual method. We illustrate the predictive performance and interpretability of GAM(L)A on a regression and a classification problem. The results show that GAM(L)A outperforms parametric models augmented by quadratic, cubic and interaction effects. Moreover, the results also suggest that the performance of GAM(L)A is not significantly different from that of random forest and gradient boosting.


Facebook removed a deepfake video of Zelensky

Facebook's policy banning deepfakes was the latest to be put to the test amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. On Wednesday, the company confirmed it has removed a video that purportedly showed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but was actually a shoddy deepfake. "Earlier today, our teams identified and removed a deepfake video claiming to show President Zelensky issuing a statement he never did," Meta's head of Security Policy Nathaniel Gleicher said in a statement. "It appeared on a reportedly compromised website and then started showing across the internet." He said the company pulled the video in line with its "manipulated media" policy, which has banned the use of deepfakes for more than two years.

Congress wants new $200 million program to strengthen AI at combatant commands

U.S. lawmakers this month pitched a new program to increase adoption of artificial intelligence across combatant commands, one of the latest efforts to boost a technology that officials say provides an edge over world competitors like Russia and China. A $200 million Artificial Intelligence Development Fund was included in the $1.5 trillion fiscal year 2022 government funding package, and was highlighted by House and Senate appropriation committees. Another $50 million was flagged to improve recruitment and development of AI talent at the Department of Defense. "The congressional defense committees' oversight efforts discovered numerous opportunities to accelerate the pace of change, especially with respect to security and deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region, space and cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure and public shipyard improvements," budget documents state. The efforts lodged in the latest budget dovetail with the Pentagon's Artificial Intelligence and Data Acceleration initiative, announced in June 2021.

NHS rolls out AI tool which detects heart disease in 20 seconds

The NHS has rolled out a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool which can detect heart disease in just 20 seconds while patients are in an MRI scanner. A British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance concluded the machine analysis had superior precision to three clinicians. It would usually take a doctor 13 minutes or more to manually analyse images after an MRI scan has been performed. The technology is being used on more than 140 patients a week at University College London (UCL) Hospital, Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital, and Royal Free Hospital. Later this year it will be introduced to a further 40 locations across the UK and globally.
