'Digital archaeologists' have secretly scanned the 2,500-year-old Parthenon Marbles inside the British Museum -- with the hope of creating'perfect' replicas that could one day lead to the repatriation of the originals to Greece. The researchers took the detailed 3D images by stealth after the museum refused a formal request. They used technology embedded in the latest camera phones and iPads to scan half a dozen of the sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles, so the files can be used to programme a'robot sculptor' to carve replicas. Experts from the Oxford-based Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA) hope marble blocks can be created with metal chisels, in much the same way the sculptures were created by the ancient Greek architect Phidias around 447–438 BC. The marbles once formed part of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens but were stripped and shipped to Britain when Lord Elgin turned up in Greece in early 1800.

Paravision has been awarded a Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) to provide the artificial intelligence expertise it has acquired in developing facial recognition and computer vision algorithms to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Under the agreement, Paravision will support the DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center's (JAIC's) Data Readiness for Artificial Intelligence Development (DRAID) program. The company will contribute its expertise in complex AI systems and machine learning models, and in particular those with what the company refers to as'rigorous data requirements.' JAIC's DRAID program has a total value of up to $241 million, according to the company announcement. The selection process by JAIC centered AI ethics, Paravision says, pointing to its ethics committee and low false non-match rates across demographics in NIST face biometrics testing.

Ukraine is employing face recognition technology to identify invading Russian troops killed on its soil, a complex and unprecedented avenue for software already seen as problematic, experts said Thursday. The embattled nation uses details resulting from the process to try to track down and notify the families of the dead, in an act Ukraine says is aimed at piercing Russia's war information filter. While this type of artificial intelligence could offer closure to families denied it by the fog of war or Kremlin secrecy, the potential for mistakes is considerable and consequential. "If you're a Russian parent being informed that your child has been killed when it's not true, that gets into a complex ethical dilemma," said Jim Hendler, director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York state. US-based Clearview AI, often criticized by privacy advocates, says it gave Ukrainian officials free access to its service that matches images from the internet to pictures uploaded by users trying to identify someone. "The Ukrainian officials who have received access to Clearview AI have expressed their enthusiasm, and we await to hear more from them," Hoan Ton-That, the firm's co-founder and CEO, said in a statement.

Living through the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the value of technology and AI. It has also revealed a dangerous side and regulators have responded accordingly. In 2021, across the world, governing bodies have been working to regulate how AI and ML systems are used. From the UK to the EU to China, regulations on how industries should monitor their algorithms, best practices for auditing and frameworks for more transparent AI systems are on the rise.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which regulates public company securities, recently proposed its own climate impact reporting requirement. Many US public companies already voluntarily publish information on this topic for shareholders who have been asking for those details. But various state GOP attorneys general are already questioning the SEC's ability to impose the requirement, asserting that such a requirement lacks materiality. So there's a distinct possibility the SEC's proposal will get tied up in litigation, at least for now. Probabilistic word embedding models have emerged as a way to model textual data in scientific applications [Rudolph We introduce probabilistic embeddings using et al., 2016, Bamler and Mandt, 2017]. The advantages include Laplacian priors (PELP). The proposed model enables flexible inclusion of prior knowledge, explicit handling incorporating graph side-information into of uncertainty, straightforward estimation, and usefulness static word embeddings. We theoretically show in decision-making [Ghahramani, 2015]. More versatile that the model unifies several previously proposed and flexible word embedding methods allow for increasingly embedding methods under one umbrella.
