First autonomous X-ray-analyzing AI is cleared in the EU
An artificial intelligence tool that reads chest X-rays without oversight from a radiologist got regulatory clearance in the European Union last week -- a first for a fully autonomous medical imaging AI, the company, called Oxipit, said in a statement. It's a big milestone for AI and likely to be contentious, as radiologists have spent the last few years pushing back on efforts to fully automate parts of their job. The tool, called ChestLink, scans chest X-rays and automatically sends patient reports on those that it sees as totally healthy, with no abnormalities. Any images that the tool flags as having a potential problem are sent to a radiologist for review. Most X-rays in primary care don't have any problems, so automating the process for those scans could cut down on radiologists' workloads, the Oxipit said in informational materials.

The adoption of the AHRC's recommendations for the introduction of specific legislation governing the use of AI would signal a change in the approach to the regulation of AI and other emerging technologies that has been adopted in Australia to date. Free data access is an issue in the use of AI tools in the provision of legal services in Australia. The success of an AI tool will be determined by the size and diversity of the sample data which is used to train that tool. There are a number of factors that contribute to free data access in Australia and generally these factors apply across the spectrum of different categories of AI tools discussed in question 2 (being litigation, transactional and knowledge management tools).
Fortnite developer raises $144 MILLION for Ukraine
Epic Games, the developer of the hugely successful video game Fortnite, has revealed it's raised $144 million (ยฃ109.5 million) for Ukraine. In conjunction with Microsoft's Xbox, the firm had pledged to donate all of its proceeds from the game to Ukraine relief efforts for two weeks, starting March 20. The total will fund humanitarian relief efforts led by several charities to help Ukrainian people affected by the ongoing war with Russia, Epic Games said. These charities include UNICEF, Direct Relief, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme. Fornite's Twitter page posted: 'Our deepest thanks to everyone who joined us in supporting humanitarian relief efforts for people affected by the war in Ukraine.
Applying laser technology to solve humanity's challenges
Directed energy is "the ability to create a high amount of energy in a controlled volume at a given distance in order to trigger physical reactions to study the interaction between the energy and the matter," says Dr. Chaouki Kasmi, who is the Chief Researcher at DERC, which is part of the Abu Dhabi government's Advanced Technology Research Council. The research at DERC reflects the multitude of applications that are possible using directed energy, but the research projects have at least one thing in common: the goal of solving real-world scientific or technical challenges. For example, one of DERC's recent developments is a landmine detection system โ the ground-penetrating radar - designed to help developing or previously war-torn countries detect and neutralize unexploded landmines. They have their sights set much higher and further with projects focused on using lasers for communications on land, to the moon, and even underwater--truly making the entire world a better place with directed energy technology. "The disruptive innovation that we are bringing today is how we can make it affordable for developing countries. The idea is to create a technology that could really help solve a worldwide problem at low cost. And this is very important for us as we would like to have the system deployed at scale," says Dr. Kasmi.

AI regulation is evolving differently on each side of the North Atlantic
Both houses of the U.S. Congress now have significant legislation designed specifically to rein in AI created by contractors for use by the federal government. The news arrives as an influential non-governmental research institute has issued a major critique of the European Commission's proposed AI Act, citing problems and suggested solutions. A House of Representatives bill would create new rules for how the federal government buys artificial intelligence, presumably including biometric applications. The Senate already is deliberating its version of the legislation. Both bodies have to agree on bills for them to be sent to the president for a signature.

US Companies Must Deal with EU AI law, Like It or Not
Don't look now, but using Google Analytics to track your website's audience might be illegal. That's the view of a court in Austria, which in January found that Google's data product was in breach of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as it was not doing enough to make sure data transferred from the EU to the company's servers in the US was protected (from, say, US intelligence agencies). Well for those working in AI and biotech, it matters, especially to those working outside of Europe with a view to expansion there. For a start, this is a major precedent that threatens to upend the way many tech companies work, since the tech sector relies heavily on the safe use and transfer of large quantities of data. Whether you use Google Analytics is neither here nor there; the case has shown that Privacy Shield -- the EU-US framework that governs the transfer of personal information in compliance with GDPR -- may not be compliant with European law after all.

There is a common misconception that once AI becomes embedded in healthcare processes, it will take away human jobs.
