Smooth Robust Tensor Completion for Background/Foreground Separation with Missing Pixels: Novel Algorithm with Convergence Guarantee

Robust PCA (RPCA) and its tensor extension, namely, Robust Tensor PCA (RTPCA), provide an effective framework for background/foreground separation by decomposing the data into low-rank and sparse components, which contain the background and the foreground (moving objects), respectively. However, in real-world applications, the presence of missing pixels is a very common but challenging issue due to errors in the acquisition process or manufacturer defects. RPCA and RTPCA are not able to recover the background and foreground simultaneously with missing pixels. The objective of this study is to address the problem of background/foreground separation with missing pixels by combining the video recovery, background/foreground separation into a single framework. To achieve this, a smooth robust tensor completion (SRTC) model is proposed to recover the data and decompose it into the static background and smooth foreground, respectively. An efficient algorithm based on tensor proximal alternating minimization (tenPAM) is implemented to solve the proposed model with global convergence guarantee under very mild conditions. Extensive experiments on real data demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for background/foreground separation with missing pixels.

In a lab at the University of Washington, robots are playing air hockey. As the robots play, the researchers who built them are learning more about how they work, how they think and where they have room to grow, said Xu Chen, one of those researchers and an associate professor of mechanical engineering at UW. "From a robot's viewpoint, artificial intelligence is getting more and more mature," Chen said, referring to the software and algorithms that help a robot take in its surroundings and make decisions. "But if we want a full-scale robot to be able to think very quickly and cleverly, and then be able to do things in the physical space, I don't think we're there yet." The games are a way to get one step closer to taking the robots out of the air hockey arena and into the workforce, asking machines to shoulder tasks like lifting and moving heavy boxes for hours at a time. Robots are already working in warehouses, helping Amazon and Walmart customers get their orders faster, but e-commerce and retail leaders want them to do more.
UT Joins New SEC Artificial Intelligence, Data Science Consortium
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is among the 14 member universities of the Southeastern Conference forming a new artificial intelligence consortium. The consortium is designed to grow opportunities in the fast-changing fields of AI and data science, which are expected to be foundational for the future of industry, education, and research. It is believed to be the first athletics conference collaboration to focus on AI for workforce development. "Artificial intelligence and data science have universal applications, and we are proud to join with SEC universities to lead education and research in these emerging fields," said Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor John Zomchick. "The consortium will create exciting opportunities for our faculty, staff, and students to explore AI and data science and shape their future."
Army Testing Facial Recognition in Child-Care Centers
Live video feeds of daycare centers are common, but the Army wants to take their kid-monitoring capabilities to the next level. Under a new pilot program being rolled out at a Fort Jackson, S.C. child-care center, the military is looking for service providers to layer commercially available facial recognition and artificial intelligence (AI) over existing closed-circuit television video feeds to improve childcare and cut costs. The request for bids on the project, called Installations of the Future: Technology Pilot for Child Development Center, explained that the CCTV feeds aren't constantly monitored by humans and the pilot program will explore whether AI could fill in the gaps. "Video analytic software provides the added security of continual computer monitoring used as an addition to the human CCTV monitoring," the request for bid said. "Moreover, it provides instant notifications to staff on a wide range of important AR 190-3 monitoring parameters as events occur."

Tau Drones, which helped conduct the audit, now is taking part in a commercialization program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Tau Drones, an energy analytics company, was accepted to and has started the National Science Foundation's National I-Corps Program. Tau Drones is a local company in Grand Forks, N.D., owned by Matt Dunlevy. The company evaluates commercial and residential buildings for energy efficiency. "We are trying to automate the energy auditing process as well as make sense of why energy is lost from certain buildings," said Karthik Balaji, Tau Drones' product development lead.

Lakeland officials hope artificial intelligence will prevent traffic crashes
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Department of Transportation just gave Lakeland $500,000 to install artificial intelligence at 25 intersections, in the hopes of reducing the number of traffic crashes in the city. Last summer, the city kicked off a pilot AI program at four intersections. It works by installing a series of sensors at least 150 feet away from an intersection. "It is measuring the speed of the vehicle, the distance from the intersection," explained city spokesman, Kevin Cook. If the potential red-light runner looks like they are going to run the light, the computer keeps the light red for the cross-traffic for up to four seconds, which keeps them out of harm's way.
Aidoc Gets FDA 510(k) Clearance for AI-Powered Algorithm for Brain Aneurysms
Could a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled advance have an impact in the diagnosis and treatment of brain aneurysms? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance to Aidoc's new AI platform for brain aneurysms. In addition to identifying and triaging suspected cases, the algorithm facilitates communication and workflow between radiologists, neurologists and neuroendovascular surgeons, according to the company. Researchers have estimated that approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm.1 The Brain Aneurysm Foundation has noted that most aneurysms are small, ranging from 1/8 inch to an inch, and ruptured aneurysms are reportedly misdiagnosed or there is a delay in diagnosis in 25 percent of patients who present to health-care providers.1 Elad Walach, the CEO and co-founder of Aidoc, said the new AI-enabled algorithm may help enhance timely diagnosis and care for brain aneurysms.
