Privid's a privacy-preserving video analytics system supports aggregation queries, which process large amounts of video data. "Privid" could help officials gather secure public health data or enable transportation departments to monitor the density and flow of pedestrians, without learning personal information about people. Surveillance cameras have an identity problem, fueled by an inherent tension between utility and privacy. As these powerful little devices have cropped up seemingly everywhere, the use of machine learning tools has automated video content analysis at a massive scale -- but with increasing mass surveillance, there are currently no legally enforceable rules to limit privacy invasions. Security cameras can do a lot -- they've become smarter and supremely more competent than their ghosts of grainy pictures past, the ofttimes "hero tool" in crime media.
Technology Helps Ensure There's No Safe Harbor for War Criminals
In its effort to ensure there is no hiding place in the United States for war criminals, genocidaires and other human rights abusers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has sought to harness the power of innovation, employing automated facial recognition technology and clever software algorithms to identify perpetrators who might be in, or be traveling to, America, officials told AFCEA's 2021 Federal Identity Forum and Expo Tuesday. War Crimes Hunter (WCH) is a series of customized reusable software tools built by the ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Innovation Lab in Crystal City, Virginia. It's used by HSI investigators in the Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Unit to try and identify suspected war criminals or other human rights violators. WCH automates the repetitive administrative work, while leaving key decisions to human analysts, explained Amy Nunes, a section chief in the unit. "We automate what we can automate as much as possible, still keeping an [human] analyst in the loop, because we didn't want to risk getting a bunch of [false positives or junk data] that we didn't need," she said.
US military wants $29.8m for IT to boost AI intel analysis
The US Northern Command, the military command group designated to protect North America from attack, has lobbied Congress for $29.8m to expand its IT infrastructure to better support machine-learning technologies. The request is part of the command's unfunded priorities list for fiscal year 2023, a wish list of all the gear and tech US NORTHCOM and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reckons is needed for building and testing new weapons or operating monitoring systems, totaling some $135 million. The requested IT funding will, we're told, be used to procure cloud computing infrastructure to run AI workloads from US NORTHCOM and NORAD's joint operations center, according to Defense News this week. The goal is to build smart cloud-hosted systems that can process incoming data, generate insight and decision options, and make this intelligence available across the Dept of Defense for leaders to consider. "Maintaining our strategic advantage begins with improving domain awareness globally, including in the approaches to North America," General Glen VanHerk, US NORTHCOM and NORAD's commander, said in a statement before the Senate Armed Forces in late March.

It's not a coincidence that two global multinational investment banks and financial services companies, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, agrees that the nascent metaverse market could be worth $8 trillion in the future. In its latest Technology Vision 2022 report, titled Meet me in the metaverse, multinational information technology services company, Accenture surveyed more than 4,600 business and technology leaders across 23 industries in 35 countries. Like an arms race, futuristic big tech companies Microsoft, Facebook (FB now Meta), and Apple Inc, Google (now Alphabet) amongst others, are scrambling to sweep up the metaverse. Facebook (now Meta) describes the metaverse as "a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren't in the same physical space as you". CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is working on egocentric data, which involves seeing worlds from a first-person perspective.
How is artificial intelligence aiding war in Ukraine?
In early March, Clearview A.I. founder, Hoan Ton-That, started reaching out to people who could help him present his technology to the Ukrainian government. Clearview holds a huge database of scraped photos from multiple social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The facial recognition company is already being used extensively in the U.S. According to Ton-That, the Russian invasion presented another implementation for the technology. "We saw images of people who were prisoners of war and fleeing situations," Mr Ton-That says "It got us thinking that this could potentially be a technology that could be useful for identification, and also verification." Last month, Ukrainian defence authorities began using facial recognition technology.

Leading MEPs raise the curtain on draft AI rules
The two European Parliament co-rapporteurs finalised the Artificial Intelligence (AI) draft report on Monday (11 April), covering where they have found common ground. The most controversial issues have been pushed further down the line. Liberal Dragoș Tudorache and social-democrat Brando Benifei have been spearheading the discussion on the AI Act for the civil rights and consumer protection committees of the European Parliament, respectively. "There are things that we agreed already, and they will be in the draft report, and things on which we think that we will agree, but because we haven't found right now the common denominator, we did not put them in the report," Tudorache said. "Our approach has been to make this regulation truly human-centric," Benifei told EURACTIV.
