How SpaceX is using AI to advance its ambitions

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, refused to give up easily. Its first three attempts to launch its Falcon 1 rocket between 2006 and 2008 failed. In 2010, the company then shifted to building a much bigger rocket called Falcon 9. Gradually, it began to deliver cargo to the International Space Station for NASA. The next decade saw the California-based aerospace company transform itself because of its ability to lower the cost of space travel drastically. On May 27, 2020, NASA launched people for the first time in 10 years aboard a rocket owned not by NASA but SpaceX: a Dragon 2 capsule on a Falcon 9 rocket.

FIRST ON FOX: The Problem Solvers Caucus is backing legislation in the House that would extend Title 42 -- the latest sign of bipartisan pushback against the Biden administration's plans to end the public health order in May. The Biden administration announced earlier this month that it will end the order on May 23, a measure that has been used since March 2020 to quickly remove a majority of migrants encountered at the southern border due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with growing fears that the already massive border numbers will only accelerate if the order is lifted, a number of moderate Democrats have joined with Republicans in pushing the administration to delay its move. The Week in Data: 'Nip nops' and 'unalive': gaming the AI filters

This week, in a neatly self-referential story, an algorithm has been developed to help workers ascertain if their jobs are at risk of automation byโ€ฆ an algorithm. Researchers compared robotic and human abilities to identify the most at-risk jobs (meat packers and slaughterers are high risk; astronomers and neurologists are low risk) and also used the comparison to work out which lower-risk jobs people could safely and easily jump to. In other AI-defying news, people are using'algospeak' โ€“ language that will not be picked up by AI content moderation systems โ€“ to ensure their (sometimes dubious, sometimes legit) content remains live and uncensored. Examples include using'unalive' instead of'dead' and the corn emoji instead of'porn'. As well as screening out properly dodgy content, moderation algorithms have been found to censor already marginalised groups, demonetising and down-ranking posts that include words such as'gay', and'racist'.


Sitting Out of the Artificial Intelligence Arms Race Is Not an Option

Phoenix Ghost: What we know about the US's new drones for Ukraine

The United States has disclosed details of its latest military aid package to be used by Ukraine's forces in the country's east after Russian forces this week launched a full-scale offensive in the region. The new $800m assistance package includes a new unmanned aerial weapons system, or drone, dubbed the Phoenix Ghost. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the drones, which are produced by a US company, Aevex Aerospace, are particularly well suited for the fight in Ukraine's east, in the flat and open terrain of the region known as Donbas. "Without getting into the specifications, but the kinds of things this drone can do lend itself well to this particular kind of terrain," Kirby told reporters on Thursday. "I think I'm just going leave it at that. But its purpose is akin to that of the Switchblade โ€ฆ which is basically a one-way drone, an attack drone. And that's essentially what this is designed to do".


How A.I. Can Promote Vision Zero

Although autonomous vehicles frequently steal the media spotlight, Tanya Mohn argues that there are more practical, immediate ways to use artificial intelligence to improve traffic safety. As Mohn writes, "Artificial intelligence is already being used to enhance driving safety: cellphone apps that monitor behavior behind the wheel and reward safe drivers with perks and connected vehicles that communicate with each other and with road infrastructure." According to David Ward, president of the Global New Car Assessment Program, there are several "beneficial, low-cost, intermediate technologies that are available now. A prime example is intelligent speed assistance, or I.S.A., which uses A.I. to manage a car's speed via in-vehicle cameras and maps," a technology that will soon be mandatory in the European Union. Other technologies include cameras that can assess distracted driving behavior, allowing law enforcement to see whether a driver is holding a phone below the dashboard, for example.
