Companies around the world invest billions in R&D to provide cutting-edge innovation to their products and services. In order to protect these investments, companies apply for patents. Therefore, the number of utility patents a company is granted can be considered a rough measure of its level of innovation. Every year, the Patent 300 List identifies America's most innovative companies within the intellectual property space by analyzing the patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In 2021, the USPTO granted a total of 327,798 utility patents, down 7% from the previous year.


FDA Clears World's First AI-Driven Portable 3D Breast Ultrasound Scanner

This week iSono Health announced FDA clearance of the company's ATUSA System for breast imaging. This is world's first AI-driven portable and automated 3D breast ultrasound scanner. In just 2 minutes, the ATUSA system automatically scans the entire breast volume, independent of operator expertise, and offers 3D visualization of the breast tissue. The ATUSA system is designed from the ground up to seamlessly integrate with advanced machine learning models that will give physicians a comprehensive set of tools for decision making and patient management. This is the first of several intended FDA submissions for the company.


Clearview AI agrees to limit sales of facial recognition data in the US

Notorious facial recognition company Clearview AI has agreed to permanently halt sales of its massive biometric database to all private companies and individuals in the United States as part of a legal settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union, per court records. Monday's announcement marks the close of a two-year legal dispute brought by the ACLU and privacy advocate groups in May of 2020 against the company over allegations that it had violated BIPA, the 2008 Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. This act requires companies to obtain permission before harvesting a person's biometric information -- fingerprints, gait metrics, iris scans and faceprints for example -- and empowers users to sue the companies who do not. "Fourteen years ago, the ACLU of Illinois led the effort to enact BIPA – a groundbreaking statute to deal with the growing use of sensitive biometric information without any notice and without meaningful consent," Rebecca Glenberg, staff attorney for the ACLU of Illinois, said in a statement. "BIPA was intended to curb exactly the kind of broad-based surveillance that Clearview's app enables. Today's agreement begins to ensure that Clearview complies with the law. This should be a strong signal to other state legislatures to adopt similar statutes."

Multifidelity data fusion in convolutional encoder/decoder networks

We analyze the regression accuracy of convolutional neural networks assembled from encoders, decoders and skip connections and trained with multifidelity data. Besides requiring significantly less trainable parameters than equivalent fully connected networks, encoder, decoder, encoder-decoder or decoder-encoder architectures can learn the mapping between inputs to outputs of arbitrary dimensionality. We demonstrate their accuracy when trained on a few high-fidelity and many low-fidelity data generated from models ranging from one-dimensional functions to Poisson equation solvers in two-dimensions. We finally discuss a number of implementation choices that improve the reliability of the uncertainty estimates generated by Monte Carlo DropBlocks, and compare uncertainty estimates among low-, high- and multifidelity approaches.


AI and Novel Reference Map May Advance Retinal Disease Therapies

Scientists from the National Eye Institute (NEI) discovered five subpopulations of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Using artificial intelligence (AI), the researchers were able to analyze images of RPE at single-cell resolution to create a reference map that locates each subpopulation within the eye. Their findings are published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in a paper titled, "Single-cell–resolution map of human retinal pigment epithelium helps discover subpopulations with differential disease sensitivity." "These results provide a first-of-its-kind framework for understanding different RPE cell subpopulations and their vulnerability to retinal diseases, and for developing targeted therapies to treat them," said Michael F. Chiang, MD, director of the NEI, part of the National Institutes of Health. "The findings will help us develop more precise cell and gene therapies for specific degenerative eye diseases," said the study's lead investigator, Kapil Bharti, PhD, who directs the NEI Ocular and Stem Cell Translational Research Section.
