Spacecraft crash into asteroid at 15K mph is not self-indulgent NASA experiment, writes TOM LEONARD

One day in late September a box-shaped spacecraft weighing approximately half a ton will slam into an asteroid seven million miles away from Earth at a speed of 15,000mph, in a bid to knock it into a new orbit. This suicide mission by a craft the size of a golf cart is not just a self-indulgent experiment dreamed up by NASA scientists with money to burn. The very future of mankind could depend on its success because the $330 million (£269 million) Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART, for short) may well provide the answer to a problem that has preoccupied astronomers for centuries: what to do when an asteroid is on a collision course with our planet. 'This is a mission for planet Earth -- all the peoples of Earth -- because we would all be threatened,' said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, who added that Dart has'turned science fiction into science fact'. Ever since the 1980s, when scientists first realised that the six-mile-wide Chicxulub crater off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula had been left by an asteroid whose impact triggered the mass destruction of all non-avian dinosaurs, Hollywood has latched on to the blockbuster potential of such a storyline. Films such as Armageddon, Deep Impact and, most recently, Don't Look Up, have all made millions at the Box Office by playing on our fear of an extinction-level event triggered by a planet-killing asteroid.

Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram has the latest on the Biden admin's response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict on'Special Report.' Fighting continues over Ukraine's Zmiinyi Island, also known as Snake Island, as Russia looks to reinforce its troops on the small body of land located just off the southwest Ukrainian coastline in the Black Sea, officials warned Wednesday. The island became a symbol of Ukraine's resistance immediately following Russia's invasion in late February after Ukrainian soldiers famously stood up to a Russian warship. The United Kingdom's defense ministry warned that Russia is "repeatedly trying to reinforce its exposed garrison" located on the island. Snake Island, though tiny, has proven strategically important in Ukraine's war against Russia as it is located roughly 30 miles from Ukraine's most southern region.

Commerce Department Launches the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee

Today, the Department of Commerce hosted the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC). Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo noted in her address to the NAIAC members that the committee will assist the federal government by providing insights into AI-related issues and complement the Department's work with international partners – including the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Deputy Secretary Don Graves also addressed the NAIAC, emphasizing his hope that the committee's recommendations would help the nation chart a path for responsible and inclusive AI that will advance economic equity. The NAIAC is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST Director and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology Dr. Laurie Locascio emphasized how scientific and technological advances have expanded both opportunities and challenges for standards and measurements that cultivate trust in technology, part of NIST's mission.


Ireland's first AI Ambassador is announced

The Government has appointed Ireland's first Artificial Intelligence Ambassador. Businesswoman Dr Patricia Scanlon is taking up the role and will be tasked with communicating with businesses, schools and institutions about the benefits and risks of AI. She is the founder and Executive Chairperson of SoapBox Labs, which uses artificial intelligence in the development of voice and speech recognition applications designed for children's voices. From robots and facial recognition software, to social media apps and streaming platforms - AI is playing an increasingly significant role in people's lives. There are ethical concerns about the technology when it comes to privacy, surveillance, bias and discrimination.



Performing Video Frame Prediction of Microbial Growth with a Recurrent Neural Network

A Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) was used to perform video frame prediction of microbial growth for a population of two mutants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The RNN was trained on videos of 20 frames that were acquired using fluorescence microscopy and microfluidics. The network predicted the last 10 frames of each video, and the accuracy's of the predictions was assessed by comparing raw images, population curves, and the number and size of individual colonies. Overall, we found the predictions to be accurate using this approach. The implications this result has on designing autonomous experiments in microbiology, and the steps that can be taken to make the predictions even more accurate, are discussed.
