Singapore launches world's first Artificial Intelligence governance self-test
At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held in Davos in May this year (2022), Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo (Minister Teo) announced the launch by Singapore of A.I. Verify, which is the world's first AI Governance Testing Framework and Toolkit, providing a means for companies to measure and demonstrate how safe and reliable their artificial intelligence (AI) products and services are. Singapore's launch of A.I. Verify follows its launch of the Model AI Governance Framework in 2020 and the National AI Strategy in 2019. A.I. Verify seeks to promote transparency on the use of AI between companies and their stakeholders through self-conducted technical tests and process checks. Developed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the Personal Data Protection Commission, A.I. Verify puts Singapore at the forefront of international discourse concerning the ethical use of AI. A.I. Verify has been launched as a Minimum Viable Product (the MVP) which will undergo further product development.
Pentagon Calls for New Ideas in 'Third Wave' of AI Evolution
A key research and development agency within the Department of Defense is accepting new contract proposals specifically focused on advancing algorithmic processing within Defense's artificial intelligence projects. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is formally soliciting contracts for its new Enabling Confidence program, a subsect within its Artificial Intelligence Exploration initiative. The AIE focuses on what DARPA defines as its "third wave" of artificial intelligence research, which includes AI theory and application research that examines limitations with rule and statistical learning theories belying AI technologies. "The pace of discovery in AI science and technology is accelerating worldwide," the program announcement says. "AIE will enable DARPA to fund pioneering AI research to discover new areas where R&D programs awarded through this new approach may be able to advance the state of the art."
Using Deep Learning to Predict Gentrification
Gentrification is a social process where wealthier households move into a neighborhood. It increases the average household income, encourages the emergence of new businesses, and causes demographic displacement. The reasons behind the troublesome gentrification of Chicago go back to the 1920s. At that time, gentrification was partly encouraged by stimulating private investment and paving the way for urban renewal operations. In the 1950s, many white families moved out of the urban neighborhoods while the Latinos, African Americans, and other minorities moved into the city.
Technique improves AI ability to understand 3D space using 2D images
"We live in a 3D world, but when you take a picture, it records that world in a 2D image," says Tianfu Wu, corresponding author of a paper on the work and an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University. "AI programs receive visual input from cameras. So if we want AI to interact with the world, we need to ensure that it is able to interpret what 2D images can tell it about 3D space. In this research, we are focused on one part of that challenge: how we can get AI to accurately recognize 3D objects -- such as people or cars -- in 2D images, and place those objects in space." While the work may be important for autonomous vehicles, it also has applications for manufacturing and robotics.

It's the latest lawsuit filed by Thaler, who has sought to secure AI intellectual property rights around the world, so far with limited success. On Monday, he will argue before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit that inventors on patents do not need to be human. "My interest is the definition of what a person is," Thaler said in an interview with Bloomberg Law. "What I'm building, what many will argue, is sentient machine intelligence. So maybe expansion to the term sentient organism would be in order."
NASA's Capstone lunar mission will launch later this month
NASA is set to launch its'CAPSTONE' spacecraft mission later this month to orbit around the moon, in preparation for a new lunar space station. The craft, which is around the size of a microwave oven and weighs just 55 pounds, will blast off from the Mฤhia Peninsula, New Zealand some time between June 13-22. It will test the stability of a halo-shaped orbit around the moon before this is used by Lunar Gateway, NASA's planned lunar outpost. Lunar Gateway will one day serve as a'staging area' for landing humans on the moon and potentially as a jumping point for missions to Mars. How AmEx used its credit fraud AI to start a banking product
When credit card giant American Express began offering bank accounts for the first time last year, it had a foundation of fraud detection to bring to an entirely new product arena. That meant in some cases, the company could port over AI and machine-learning models used to spot phony identities or dodgy transactions for its credit card products to its consumer and business checking accounts. But it's been a process, and now, AmEx plans to invest in bringing additional AI techniques used to protect against credit card fraud to its banking products. "We have models which run to detect whether it's you or whether somebody else is logging into your account. Very straightforwardly, we transferred it to the banking product," said Abhinav Jain, vice president for Global Fraud Decision Science at AmEx, who is responsible for the company's fraud detection models.
Survey: Few Americans Want Government to Limit Use of Facial Recognition Technology, Particularly for Public Safety or Airport Screening
Only one in four Americans (26 percent) think government should strictly limit the use of facial recognition technology, according to a new survey from the Center for Data Innovation--and that support drops even further if it would come at the expense of public safety. Fewer than one in five Americans (18 percent) would agree with strictly limiting the technology if that is the tradeoff, while a solid majority (55 percent) would disagree. Similarly, only 20 percent of Americans say government should strictly limit use of facial recognition if it would mean airports can't use the technology to speed up security lines, while a 54 percent majority would disagree with such a limit. And just 24 percent want strict limits if it would prevent stores from using the technology to stop shoplifting, while 49 percent would oppose such a tradeoff. There were some differences in these opinions based on age, with older Americans more likely to oppose government limits on the technology.
