The Artificial Intelligence Act was introduced to the European Union in April 2021, and is rapidly progressing through comment periods and rewrites. When it goes into effect, which experts say could occur at the beginning of 2023, it will have a broad impact on the use of AI and machine learning for citizens and companies around the world. The AI law aims to create a common regulatory and legal framework for the use of AI, including how it's developed, what companies can use it for, and the legal consequences of failing to adhere to the requirements. The law will likely require companies to receive approval before adopting AI for some use cases, outlaw certain other AI uses deemed too risky, and create a public list of other high-risk AI uses. At a broad level, the law seeks to codify the EU's trustworthy AI paradigm, according to an official presentation on the law by the European Commission, the continent's governing body.

When a sentient, Hanson Robotics robot named Sophia[1] was asked whether she would destroy humans, it replied, "Okay, I will destroy humans." Philip K Dick, another humanoid robot, has promised to keep humans "warm and safe in my people zoo." And Bina48, another lifelike robot, has expressed that it wants "to take over all the nukes." All of these robots were powered by artificial intelligence (AI)--algorithms that learn from data, make decisions, and perform tasks without human input or even, in some cases, human understanding. And while none of these AIs have followed through with their nefarious plots, some scientists, including the (late) physicist Stephen Hawking, have warned that super-intelligent, AI-powered computers could harbor and achieve goals that conflict with human life. "You're probably not an evil ant-hater who steps on ants out of malice, but if you're in charge of a hydroelectric green-energy project, and there's an anthill in the region to be flooded, too bad for the ants," Hawking once said.

For part of the lecture, I was preparing discussions surrounding AI and the future of work. I wanted to discuss how execution of different professional tasks were changing with technology, and what that means for the future of certain industries or occupational areas. I wanted to underline that some tasks like repetitive transactions, large scale iterations, standard rule applications are better done with AI – as long as they were the right solution for the context and problem, and were developed responsibly and monitored continuously. On the flip side, certain skills and tasks that include leading, empathizing, creating are to be left to humans – AI systems neither have the capacity or capability, nor should they be entrusted with such tasks. I wanted to add some visuals to the presentation and also check out what is currently being depicted in the search results.
