"The study of thinking machines teaches us more about the brain than we can learn by introspective methods. Western man is externalizing himself in the form of gadgets." We are experiencing one of the biggest refugee crises since World War II. Within weeks of the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 4 million people fled the country, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Although international media attention is focused on Eastern Europe, this is on top of an already-desperate situation in the Global South: It is estimated that countries in that region of the world have absorbed two-thirds of an estimated 82.4 million global refugees.
AI in Warfare: Fiction or Impending Reality
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? There are many definitions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but none of them effectively captures what AI is capable of. As such, I will not be defining AI, rather, I will be reporting the goal of AI as encapsulated at the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Project on Artificial Intelligence, where the science and technology of AI was properly born. 'To proceed on the basis of the conjecture that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it'[i] Although it has hardly been restated, this goal has the been the underlying drive behind every manifestation of AI since then. If it takes human intelligence and learning to get a thing done, then it can be replicated by a machine, once we break down the components of the particular intelligence and learning approach at play.
Science through Machine Learning: Quantification of Poststorm Thermospheric Cooling

Machine learning (ML) is often viewed as a black-box regression technique that is unable to provide considerable scientific insight. ML models are universal function approximators and - if used correctly - can provide scientific information related to the ground-truth dataset used for fitting. A benefit to ML over parametric models is that there are no predefined basis functions limiting the phenomena that can be modeled. In this work, we develop ML models on three datasets: the Space Environment Technologies (SET) High Accuracy Satellite Drag Model (HASDM) density database, a spatiotemporally matched dataset of outputs from the Jacchia-Bowman 2008 Empirical Thermospheric Density Model (JB2008), and an accelerometer-derived density dataset from CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP). These ML models are compared to the Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scatter radar (NRLMSIS 2.0) model to study the presence of post-storm cooling in the middle-thermosphere. We find that both NRLMSIS 2.0 and JB2008-ML do not account for post-storm cooling and consequently perform poorly in periods following strong geomagnetic storms (e.g. the 2003 Halloween storms). Conversely, HASDM-ML and CHAMP-ML do show evidence of post-storm cooling indicating that this phenomenon is present in the original datasets. Results show that density reductions up to 40% can occur 1--3 days post-storm depending on location and the strength of the storm.

Microsoft, NASA, and students from two HBCUs in the Reston/DC area have completed the maiden mission of a new Microsoft/NASA partnership, STEM Educational Project: AI looking for new Earths. Using methodology developed by The Microsoft Garage over years of running hackathons, in just one month – and while completing their final exams – the student hackers learned and deployed several new technologies, and quite literally reached the stars by showing they could deploy code to the International Space Station. According to Piali Ghose, Director of The Garage Reston/DC and host of the event, "This hackathon amplifies the cultural priorities closest to our hearts here at Microsoft and at The Garage because it allows us to continue fulfilling our stated commitments to making a difference, seeking diversity and being inclusive in our work, bringing multiple teams together as'One Microsoft' while collaborating with federal and academic partners, and doing all of this with a growth mindset." The partnership emerged from a shared goal of fostering the future STEM workforce by exposing university students to science, tools, and expertise "at the intersection of Space Cloud." By structuring the project as a month-long hackathon, participating students learned how real data scientists work as a team to ideate, develop, and validate their work with a proof of concept.
How to fight food waste: From laws to artificial intelligence
That equates to 31 kilograms (68 pounds) per person of perfectly good food that gets tossed each year. Madrid is planning to bring this number down with a new set of regulations to rein in food waste. The government approved a draft bill that would see supermarkets fined for throwing away surplus food ― by up to €60,000 ($57,000), or as high as €500,000 for repeat offenders. The law, if passed by parliament, would also make it mandatory for restaurants to offer so-called "doggy bags" for guests to take home their left-overs. Spain hopes to have the law in place by early 2023 to curb the amount of food that lands in the garbage instead of on someone's plate, and to reduce environmental costs.

China launched the world's first AI-operated 'mother ship,' an unmanned carrier capable of launching dozens of drones
China has launched the world's first crewless drone carrier that uses artificial intelligence to navigate autonomously in open water. Beijing has officially described it as a maritime research tool, but some experts have said the ship has the potential to be used as a military vessel. The autonomous ship, the Zhu Hai Yun (pictured here) is around 290 feet long, 45 feet wide, and 20 feet deep and can carry dozens of air, sea, and submersible drones equipped with different observation instruments, according to the shipbuilder, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipping Co. It describes the vessel as "epoch making" and the "world's first intelligent unmanned system mother ship." "The most immediate benefit to China is likely data collection," Matthew Funaiole, senior fellow of China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Insider.
Why Teslas may be driving themselves into a recall
Teslas with partially automated driving systems are a step closer to being recalled after the U.S. elevated its investigation into a series of collisions with parked emergency vehicles or trucks with warning signs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday that it is upgrading the Tesla probe to an engineering analysis, another sign of increased scrutiny of the electric vehicle maker and automated systems that perform at least some driving tasks. Documents posted Thursday by the agency raise some serious issues about Tesla's Autopilot system. The agency found that it's being used in areas where its capabilities are limited, and that many drivers aren't taking action to avoid crashes despite warnings from the vehicle. The probe now covers 830,000 vehicles, almost everything that the Austin, Texas, carmaker has sold in the U.S. since the start of the 2014 model year.

Washington, DC – Despite numerous eyewitness testimonies, investigations by media outlets and rights groups, and a Palestinian probe all determining that Israeli forces fatally shot journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, the United States has not condemned Israel for the killing. Instead, since the veteran Al Jazeera reporter was killed on May 11 in the occupied West Bank, top US officials have insisted that Israel can and should conduct an investigation. But in this US response, many advocates see a familiar script that President Joe Biden's administration has employed on more than one occasion to address Israeli violations: raise concerns, call for more information, and then move on like they never happened. "It's pretty damn thick file of abuses and murders and violations without any end or acceptable outcome as to the investigation of these crimes," Khalil Jahshan, executive director of the Arab Center Washington DC, a think tank, told Al Jazeera. "So that is continuing unfortunately, and governments on purpose bet on the short attention span of the public."
