To battle deepfakes, our technologies must track their transformations

These scenes from the war provide a glimpse into a future where, alongside existing forms of manipulation and misattribution, deepfake technology -- images that have been "convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone doing or saying something that was not actually done or said" -- will be more readily employed. More false videos will be forged and the'liar's dividend' will be used to cast doubt on authentic videos. One set of solutions to these current and future problems proposes to better track where media comes from, what is synthesized, edited or changed, and how. This'authenticity and provenance' infrastructure deserves close attention to its possibilities and preventative work on its risks. In January, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) led by the BBC, Microsoft, Adobe, Intel, Twitter, TruePic, Sony and Arm, proposed the first global technical standards for better tracking what content is authentic and what is manipulated.

Russia's invasion could return focus on armor and artillery, away from AI and robotics

Russia's invasion of Ukraine could force governments with technologically advanced militaries to reevaluate their investments in areas such as robotics and artificial intelligence, creating a renaissance for spending on armor and artillery, a panel of military leaders said this week at the Eurosatory defense expo. Gen. Matthew Van Wagenen, the deputy chief of staff for operations at NATO's headquarters in Brussels, told attendees that Russia's shelling and force thus far in Ukraine could lead to a greater focus on "hard power." "Many fell asleep believing that the kind of warfare that we're seeing in the Ukraine right now would never [have] happened again in Europe," he said. "And here we are in 2022, and attrition warfare is going on in Western Europe again. And I think what it's going to force many governments to go back and look at is: What are those investments in defense that have been made or need to be made?"


London Mayor pledges ยฃ500,000 for city's data economy

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced ยฃ500,000 in funding to support the capital's data economy, coincident with the first day of London Tech Week. The money will go into Data for London, a platform which will, according to a statement from the Mayor's office, be a "central library for the vast amount of data held across the capital, enabling Londoners to access both public and private data more easily". The new "library" is a development of the Greater London Authority's London Datastore, set up in 2010, which contains 6,000 datasets. It houses a Coronavirus Hub, which was accessed more than five million times in nine months during the pandemic. It also contains a Planning Datahub, which holds data on more than 450,000 planning proposals, as well as an Infrastructure Mapping Application, which is used by utility companies to try to reduce the congestion and disruption caused by roadworks.


From Outcome-Based to Language-Based Preferences

We review the literature on models that try to explain human behavior in social interactions described by normal-form games with monetary payoffs. We start by covering social and moral preferences. We then focus on the growing body of research showing that people react to the language in which actions are described, especially when it activates moral concerns. We conclude by arguing that behavioral economics is in the midst of a paradigm shift towards language-based preferences, which will require an exploration of new models and experimental setups.


Congressional hearings focus on AI, machine learning challenges in cybersecurity

Congressional hearings on artificial intelligence and machine learning in cyberspace quietly took place in the U.S. Senate Armed Forces Committee's Subcommittee on Cyber in early May 2022. The committee discussed the topic with representatives from Google, Microsoft and the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University. While work has begun in earnest within industry and government, it is clear that much still needs to be done. The hearing chair, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), articulated the importance of AI and machine learning to the armed forces of the United States. Additionally, the committee highlighted the "shortfall of technically trained cybersecurity personnel across the country in government and industry alike."


Miniature 'origami robots' that can flip, spin, and SWIM could dispense medicines around the body

It may sound like the plot of'Fantastic Voyage', but miniature robots that can travel around the human body and dispense medicines could soon be a reality. Researchers at Stanford University have developed a'millirobot' that can roll, flip, spin, and even swim to enter narrow spaces. The fingertip-sized machine is inspired by the Japanese paper-folding art of origami and can be controlled using magnets โ€“ carrying drug treatments directly to a tumour, blood clot, infection or pain point. The millirobot could revolutionise medicine, according to the researchers, replacing pills or intravenous injections that can cause unwanted side effects. In the 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage, a submarine and its crew are shrunk and injected into a dying patient, where they venture through his veins into his brain and destroy a blockage using laser guns.

The Industrial Revolution was a time of great change. With the steam engine, industries shifted away from skilled human labour towards mechanisation and machinery. As a result, many specialised workers lost their jobs and were forced to adapt to their new reality. The Luddites, a radical organisation of textile workers who were made redundant by textile machines, retaliated by destroying these machines and assassinated business owners. The Luddites gained public sympathy as many were afraid that they, like the retrenched textile workers, would lose their jobs to automated machinery.
