How Patel's new airport 'contactless corridor' technology would work

Home Secretary Priti Patel has claimed that'contactless corridors' at UK airports will let British citizens skip passport queues and breeze through border controls in just two years' time. It is thought the corridors will use concealed cameras to scan people's faces as they walk through, and compare them with a digital database of details that all visitors will have to submit before travelling – possibly via an app. If a match is found, they will be cleared for entry into the UK without having to stop or scan their passport, while those that don't match will be redirected back to customs. The UK government will be trialling the corridors at airports in 2024, prior to a full rollout planned for 2025. The new automated border screening system would replace having to go through an eGate or speaking to a Border Force officer.

When Microsoft unleashed Tay, its AI-powered chatbot, on Twitter on 23 March 2016, the software giant's hope was that it would "engage and entertain people… through casual and playful conversation". An acronym for'thinking about you', Tay was designed to mimic the language patterns of a 19-year-old American girl and learn by interacting with human users on the social network. Within hours, things had gone badly wrong. Trolls tweeted politically incorrect phrases at the bot in a bid to manipulate its behaviour. Sure enough, Tay started spewing out racist, sexist and other inflammatory messages to its following of more than 100,000 users. Microsoft was forced to lock the @TayandYou account indefinitely less than a day later, but not before its creation had tweeted more than 96,000 times.

A few weeks ago, François-Philippe Champagne, Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the launch of the second phase of the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. This second phase, which is expected to benefit from an investment of more than $443 million, aims to attract the best talent, increase cutting-edge research capacity, and foster the commercialization and adoption of AI. In 2017, the Canadian government was the first country to establish a national AI strategy. CIFAR, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, was tasked with developing and leading this pan-Canadian strategy, initially funded with $125 million. CIFAR is working closely with the three national AI institutes: Mila in Montreal, the Vector Institute in Toronto and Amii in Edmonton, as well as with Canadian universities, hospitals and other organizations.

In 2020, a study by European police agency Europol and security provider Trend Micro, identified how cybercriminals are already using AI to make their attacks more effective, and the many ways AI will power cybercrime in future. "Cybercriminals have always been early adopters of the latest technology and AI is no different," said Martin Roesler, head of forward-looking threat research at Trend Micro, when the report was published. "It is already being used for password guessing, CAPTCHA-breaking and voice cloning, and there are many more malicious innovations in the works."

The UK government launched a trio of documents concerning AI on 18 July, all with the general purpose of fostering innovation, increasing public trust in the technology and giving clarity to business. But for the detail that will allow this, there is a wait until at least the end of the year when the government will publish its white paper on AI regulation, itself another pause for reflection. The department responsible is clear on the UK approach differing from that of the EU as regulation will be spread across six bodies rather than one dedicated regulator in the EU, but less clear on what the regulation will be for now other than so light-touch that it may just be guidance. In the meantime, one of the documents calls for views on regulation over the next 10 weeks. Last September, a trio of agencies (the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Business, Engergy and Industrial Strategy and the Office for Artificial Intelligence) released the National AI Strategy guidance which promised useful developments such as a transparency standard for AI coding, something of a world-first (subsequently published in December).

Deep learning delivers proactive cyber defense

Most cybersecurity technologies, such as endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions, simply identify, track, record, and contain a threat once it has already entered an environment. Machine learning-based cybersecurity solutions are also an essential part of any security strategy, and use pre-labelled data, classified as either benign or malicious, to detect dangerous patterns. But neither set of cybersecurity solutions can proactively defend against sophisticated attacks without constant human tweaking. Fortunately, deep learning can mimic the functionality and connectivity of neurons in the human brain, enabling neural networks to independently learn from raw and un-curated data and automatically recognize unknown threats. "Deep learning is the only family of algorithms that works on raw data to identify cybersecurity threats with unmatched speed and accuracy," says Guy Caspi, CEO of Deep Instinct, a cybersecurity company.
