Situation-Aware Environment Perception for Decentralized Automation Architectures

Advances in the field of environment perception for automated agents have resulted in an ongoing increase in generated sensor data. The available computational resources to process these data are bound to become insufficient for real-time applications. Reducing the amount of data to be processed by identifying the most relevant data based on the agents' situation, often referred to as situation-awareness, has gained increasing research interest, and the importance of complementary approaches is expected to increase further in the near future. In this work, we extend the applicability range of our recently introduced concept for situation-aware environment perception to the decentralized automation architecture of the UNICARagil project. Considering the specific driving capabilities of the vehicle and using real-world data on target hardware in a post-processing manner, we provide an estimate for the daily reduction in power consumption that accumulates to 36.2%. While achieving these promising results, we additionally show the need to consider scalability in data processing in the design of software modules as well as in the design of functional systems if the benefits of situation-awareness shall be leveraged optimally.


Debiasing Deep Chest X-Ray Classifiers using Intra- and Post-processing Methods

Deep neural networks for image-based screening and computer-aided diagnosis have achieved expert-level performance on various medical imaging modalities, including chest radiographs. Recently, several works have indicated that these state-of-the-art classifiers can be biased with respect to sensitive patient attributes, such as race or gender, leading to growing concerns about demographic disparities and discrimination resulting from algorithmic and model-based decision-making in healthcare. Fair machine learning has focused on mitigating such biases against disadvantaged or marginalised groups, mainly concentrating on tabular data or natural images. This work presents two novel intra-processing techniques based on fine-tuning and pruning an already-trained neural network. These methods are simple yet effective and can be readily applied post hoc in a setting where the protected attribute is unknown during the model development and test time. In addition, we compare several intra- and post-processing approaches applied to debiasing deep chest X-ray classifiers. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first efforts studying debiasing methods on chest radiographs. Our results suggest that the considered approaches successfully mitigate biases in fully connected and convolutional neural networks offering stable performance under various settings. The discussed methods can help achieve group fairness of deep medical image classifiers when deploying them in domains with different fairness considerations and constraints.

Earlier this year, a Google engineer named Blake Lemoine made headlines for a particularly outlandish claim: After engaging in conversation with a highly sophisticated algorithm named LaMDA, he decided that the A.I. was in fact a sentient being, and as a result it deserved legal personhood. Since Lemoine made this claim, Google has fired him, and almost everyone has concluded that he is clearly wrong, but this clearly-wrong claim nonetheless launched a barrage of articles, many with the premise "Yes, but what if he wasn't?" Attention to this case isn't surprising: A century of science fiction should be enough to demonstrate that we're fascinated by the prospect of creating true artificial life. By this point, however, we ought to recognize that claims about the advent of new techno-religions tend to be--to use an industry term--almost entirely vaporware, with exactly none of the grassroots interest or staying power of the movements that are typically classified as religions. Anthony Levandowski's much-hyped Church of AI, founded in 2015, officially closed last year (do religions "close?") after several years of inactivity.

The massive Valles Marineris canyon has been revealed in stunning new images taken by the European Space Agency's Mars Express. At 2,485 miles long, over 124 miles wide and more than 4 miles deep, the Red Planet's canyon makes America's seem downright puny by comparison - Valles Marineris would span the distance from the northern tip of Norway to the southern tip of Sicily. The new image depicts two trenches, or chasma, that form a portion of the western part of Valles Marineris. The picture uses data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard Mars Express and it is a'true color' image, meaning it shows what would be seen by the human eye if looking at this region of Mars. The Red Planet's massive canyon has been revealed in new images released by the European Space Agency.

They warned the public that wildfires are likely to break out every three years, and that the destruction of homes should be a'wake-up call' to the country. Global experts are urging countries to reach their net-zero targets and halt climate change. This is widely agreed to be the leading cause of the recent spate of wildfires, as rising temperatures evaporate more moisture from the ground, drying out the soil and making vegetation more flammable if sparked.

Kmart halts use of in-store facial recognition amid Australian privacy investigation

Retailers in Australia are the latest companies to back away from facial recognition, albeit under pressure. The Guardian reports Kmart and Bunnings have temporarily halted use of facial recognition in their local stores while the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) investigates the privacy implications of their systems. The two chains were trialing the technology to spot banned customers, prevent refund fraud and reduce theft. The investigation started in mid-July, a month after the consumer advocacy group Choice learned that Kmart and Bunnings were testing facial recognition. Bunnings had already paused use as it migrated to a new system.
