Regulators, compliance officers and banking leaders have long sought effective tools to combat the increasing sophistication of bad actors, whose wrongdoing frequently leads to billions of dollars in financial losses. Compliance officers and regulators are looking to identify criminal actions such as insider trading, market manipulation, money laundering, violations of sanctions/export controls and trading in others' accounts more accurately and quickly.

The details of the United Kingdom's data protection reform plans are solidifying with the release of the first public version of the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDIB), and the government has accompanied this with a set of new proposals for AI regulation. The new data protection reform bill is the first concrete shape of a new regulatory framework for the country as it breaks off from terms established under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), emerging from a consultation process that ran for nearly a year. The new AI regulation proposals consist of six core principles that attempt to balance consumer and general safety concerns with the needs and wants of the UK's $4.6 billion AI sector. The new data protection reform bill is the next step in the UK's gradual process of breaking entirely with the GDPR in the wake of "Brexit," with the current governing Data Protection Act 2018 largely mirroring those terms. The UK government has expressed a desire to set terms that are more business-friendly, but has to walk a careful path to avoid being considered an "inadequate" data exchange partner by the EU due to lack of GDPR parity.

A new diagnostic tool uses artificial intelligence to detect oral and throat cancers from saliva samples with more than 90 per cent accuracy. Estimates suggest there will be 54,000 new cases of oral cancer and 20,640 new cases of oesophageal cancer in the US alone this year. The respective 5-year survival rates for these cancers are 68 and 20.6 per cent, but when detected early, those numbers jump to more than 86 and 47 per cent. The issue is that most oral and throat cancers aren't detected early. Current screening methods rely on visual examinations by a healthcare provider.

London-based digital health startup Cera Care Limited has raised $320m (£263.6m) in an equity and debt funding round, with the goal of increasing the number of patients it serves from 15,000 to 100,000. Based in the UK and with some operations in Germany, Cera's digital platform provides services such as prescriptions home deliveries and nursing care based on data analysis. Cera nurses perform at-home appointments where patient data is collected and studied by AI algorithms. Cera claims its AI tech can predict patient health deterioration before it occurs and therefore reduce the need for hospitalisation. The company says this can reduce the strain on NHS services and free up hospital beds and care capacity.

Technology already plays a vital role in modern warfare and, with the emergence of AI, it is expected to assume an even bigger role in the future of defence. So far, the Indian Army has undertaken various projects with many more in the pipeline aimed towards the integration of AI. However, not much has materialised in terms of improvement in its capabilities in an actual battle environment. "The scope of artificial intelligence is vast. And if I did say, what we have done till now is very rudimentary or very basic of what the scope or potential of AI in the Indian Army can be", said Lt. Gen. Shantanu Dayal, Deputy Chief of Army Staff while speaking at the'Artificial Intelligence in Defence' (AIDef) event.

The Taliban said Thursday they have no knowledge of Ayman al-Zawahiri's presence in Afghanistan, days after US President Joe Biden announced the Al-Qaeda chief's killing by a drone strike in Kabul. Zawahiri's assassination is the biggest blow to Al-Qaeda since US special forces killed Osama bin Laden in 2011, and calls into question the Taliban's promise not to harbour militant groups. "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has no information about Ayman al-Zawahiri's arrival and stay in Kabul," said an official statement -- the Taliban's first mention of his name since Biden's announcement. Zawahiri was believed to be in charge of steering Al-Qaeda's operations -- including the 9/11 attacks -- as well as serving as bin Laden's personal doctor. A senior US administration official said the 71-year-old Egyptian was on the balcony of a three-storey house in the Afghan capital when targeted with two Hellfire missiles early on Sunday.

The Taliban says it is investigating a "claim" by the United States that it killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone attack in Kabul, says a Taliban official, indicating the group's leadership was not aware of his presence there. The US said it killed al-Zawahiri with a missile fired from a drone while he stood on a balcony at his Kabul hiding place on Sunday. US officials said the killing was the biggest blow to the armed group since its founder, Osama bin Laden was shot dead more than 10 years ago. "The government and the leadership wasn't aware of what is being claimed, nor any trace there," Suhail Shaheen, the designated Taliban representative to the United Nations, who is based in Doha, told journalists in a message. "Investigation is under way now to find out about the veracity of the claim," he said, adding that the results of the investigation would be shared publicly.

Hours after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left Taipei after her controversial trip to the island, two Chinese drones breached Taiwan's airspace for the first time. Two People's Liberation Army (PLA) drones were spotted inside the airspace of Kinmen, an outlying Taiwanese island. Taiwan's Kinmen Defense Command announced two unidentified aircraft were spotted flying over Kinmen and Beiding islands Wednesday night at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. An analysis by the military determined they were unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), said Taiwan News, quoting an official statement. No Chinese military aircraft have conducted a flyover at Kinmen (alternatively known as Quemoy) since the 1950s.
