How An Unethical Tech Industry Is Undoing Ethical AI
In a perfect world, all tech development would be driven first and foremost by ethical considerations. In the world we live in, ethics-driven tech is its own field, particularly as it relates to privacy, cybersecurity, algorithms, and data mining. These are all good things, obviously. But ethics-led tech and, more specifically, ethical artificial intelligence are fundamentally hamstrung by the large political and technological conditions of our moment. Until we overcome those, ethical tech runs the risk of foundering as the feel-good window dressing on the decrepit haunted mansion of tech's most predatory, profit-minded, and privacy-obliterating measures. Ethical AI is, at its core, not evil.
Robot dogs join the US Space Force to patrol Cape Canaveral Space Station
'Robot dogs' are being tested by the US Space Force so they can carry out patrols of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The $150,000 (£123,000) four-legged bots can be equipped with a wide variety of optical and acoustic sensors, allowing them to serve as the'eyes and ears' around sensitive areas of the base. They are being used for patrols'to save significant man hours', according to a statement from the Department of Defense. Space Launch Delta 45 – the unit responsible for all space launch operations from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral – used at least two Vision 60 unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs), or'robot dogs', during the two-day test last month. Built by Ghost Robotics, the robots can be operated either autonomously or by a human controller.
Biden To Sign Bill To Boost U.S. Chips, Compete With China
President Joe Biden on Tuesday will sign a bill to provide $52.7 billion in subsidies for U.S. semiconductor production and research and to boost efforts to make the United States more competitive with China's science and technology efforts. The White House is touting investments that chip companies are making even though it remains unclear when the U.S. Commerce Department will write rules for reviewing grant awards and how long it will take to underwrite projects. The chief executives of Micron, Intel, Lockheed Martin, HP and Advanced Micro Devices will attend the signing, set for 10 a.m. EDT, as will cabinet officials and auto industry and union leaders, including United Auto Workers President Ray Curry, the White House said. Also attending will be governors of Pennsylvania and Illinois, the mayors of Detroit, Cleveland and Salt Lake City, and lawmakers. The White House said the bill's passage was spurring new chip investments.
Google and Sonos are now fighting over voice assistant patents
Google has sued Sonos, alleging that its new voice assistant violates seven patents related to its own Google Assistant technology, CNET has reported. It's the latest salvo in a long-running smart speaker battle between the companies, with each suing and countersuing the other following a period when they worked together. "[Sonos has] started an aggressive and misleading campaign against our products, at the expense of our shared customers," a Google spokesperson said in a statement. Sonos' Voice Control assistant arrived in June, letting users give commands with the phrase "Hey Sonos," much like Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant. In the complaint, Google said it "worked for years with Sonos engineers on the implementation of voice recognition and voice-activated devices control in Sonos products... even providing its Google Assistant software to Sonos for many years."

UK comes in the top nations in terms of AI startups, research, and private capital invested within AI. In 2020, it ranked third in the world for private investment into AI companies, behind only the USA and China.
EU's Artificial Intelligence Act is Moving Towards Countering the Risks and Dangers of AI
Artificial Intelligence is one of the leading technologies in the world, but there are certain risks and dangers it poses for everyone that will use it or the systems that depend on it, according to experts. Now, a legislative act of the European Union is moving towards the'Artificial Intelligence Act' of the region that will focus on protecting the public to counter its negative effects. AI is not what it seems to the world and the EU is to do something about it for its constituents. The European Union is working to push a new law that would protect its citizens regarding the risks and dangers of AI, particularly those that it brings to the world. It is known as the "Artificial Intelligence Act," and the EU says that it is the first in the industry that aims to regulate AI for the many features it brings to the public.
Move over, autopilot: This AI can avoid other planes
In February, for the first time, a Black Hawk helicopter flew itself around with no humans on board. The self-flying military helo project involved both DARPA and Sikorsky, which makes the UH-60 helicopters. Meanwhile, in some places, companies like Zipline and Wing are delivering goods by drone. Other companies are working on electric air taxis to transport people or cargo, and of course normal air traffic--commercial flights out of big airports, general aviation airplanes zipping out of others--is flying around, too. Factor in helicopters, hot air balloons, and more, and there can be a lot going on up there.
CHIPS Act targets emerging technologies including quantum, AI
Much of the focus on the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 has centered around strengthening the semiconductor industry, but the lion's share of the funds being allotted in the $280 billion bill targets industry and academic institutions conducting research and development on emerging technologies. The federal government will dole out around $50 billion over the next five years, mainly to chip manufacturers that will come out of the newly established CHIPS for America Fund. That leaves nearly $230 billion for vendors, researchers and developing technologies, and to create programs to educate students and train employees on technologies destined to become mainstream in the years ahead. Two such technologies prominently mentioned are quantum computing and AI. For instance, the National Science Foundation (NSF), one of the federal agencies responsible for allocating the funds, will establish a quantum education pilot program to promote a quantum information science workforce across the U.S. The agency also must produce a study on the educational challenges in creating a diverse and sustainable workforce in the quantum industry. NSF will also expand the existing Quantum User Expansion for Science and Technology program, making it easier for researchers to access government quantum computing hardware and clouds.
