Finance Minister Calls For Training Of Tax Personnel For Better Tech Usage

New Delhi, Sep 14: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday lauded the efforts of the Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC) and underlined the need for training Personnel for better utilisation of Artificial Intelligence and data analytics. "You keep doing good work, generating revenues, you are noticed for it, Prime Minister made a special appreciative mention recently on level of GST revenues," she said while inaugurating'Kendriya GST Parisar', the housing complex for CGST officers of Mumbai zone in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The Finance Minister also spoke about the need for training CBIC officials for better utilisation of Artificial Intelligence, data-analytics, IoT and other technologies to identify fraudulent practices, such as detection of tax evasion. She was also appreciative of the Central Intelligence Unit team of CGST Mumbai Zone for fantastic data analysis and mining tools used for large scale tax evasion resulting in big recovery and booking of offenders. She also lauded the effort of the department to take care of future needs and development required for the second phase for welfare of officers and staff.

UK backs Ukraine's claim it downed Iran-made drone used by Russia

Tehran, Iran – The United Kingdom's defence ministry has backed a Ukrainian claim that Ukraine's forces likely shot down an Iranian-made drone that was used by Russia in its offensive against its neighbouring country. In its latest military intelligence update on Wednesday, the ministry said it was "highly likely" that Russia has deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) made by Iran in the nearly seven-month war in Ukraine. "Russia is almost certainly increasingly sourcing weaponry from other heavily sanctioned states like Iran and North Korea as its own stocks dwindle," it said. The statement came a day after the Ukrainian military published several images and said it had likely shot down a drone near Kupiansk in Kharkiv that appeared to be an Iranian Shahed-136 model. The Iranian government has yet to comment on the claims, but its officials have previously denied supplying Russia with drones to be used in Ukraine, saying Iran would not assist either side in the war as it backed its resolution through dialogue. There are no known official specifications for the Shahed-136, but it is a so-called "suicide drone" that is capable of carrying a warhead over long distances.


NASA struggles to regain control of its $30 million Capstone spacecraft

NASA's tiny CAPSTONE spacecraft has run into trouble on its way to the moon and is currently tumbling out of control. The US space agency's $30 million probe, which is around the size of a microwave oven and weighs just 55 pounds, has also been experiencing temperature issues and had problems generating power from its solar panels. Toward the end of a major engine burn last Thursday (September 9), CAPSTONE experienced an anomaly that put the probe in a protective'safe mode', mission team members said. In an update issued this week, Advanced Space – the company that is managing the project for NASA – described it as a'dynamic operational situation'. It is not the first time CAPSTONE has hit a snag.


ESA's Solar Orbiter records a mysterious magnetic switchback

The European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft has captured the reversal of the Sun's magnetic field on camera for the first time. These reversals, known as magnetic switchbacks, have previously been hypothesised, but until now have not been observed directly. The new observation provides a full view of the structure and confirms that magnetic switchbacks have an S-shaped character. ESA hopes the footage will help to unravel the mystery of how their physical formation mechanism might help accelerate solar winds. Circuit Decision on AI Complicates Inventor Strategies

The Federal Circuit recently held as a matter of statutory interpretation that an artificial intelligence system cannot be named as an inventor on a US patent application. This holding, which effectively excludes AI systems from the category of "individuals" eligible to be named as inventors, may complicate the intellectual property strategies of innovators who use advanced AI for research and development. Here's what happened and why it matters. The Federal Circuit was asked to determine whether an AI system called DABUS could be named as the inventor on two separate patent applications. The first disclosed a light source that was calibrated with a specific frequency corresponding to, among other characteristics, certain human brainwave activity.

The overall notion is that sometimes we tend to overlook our own limits and get ourselves into hot water accordingly. Whether due to hubris, being egocentric, or simply blind to our own capabilities, the precept of being aware of and taking into explicit account our proclivities and shortcomings is abundantly sensible and helpful. Let's add a new twist to the sage piece of advice. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has got to know its limitations. What do I mean by that variant of the venerated catchphrase? Turns out that the initial rush to get modern-day AI into use as a hopeful solver of the world's problems has become sullied and altogether muddied by the realization that today's AI does have some rather severe limitations. We went from the uplifting headlines of AI For Good and have increasingly found ourselves mired in AI For Bad. You see, many AI systems have been developed and fielded with all sorts of untoward racial and gender biases, and a myriad of other such appalling inequities.
