The SAME score: Improved cosine based bias score for word embeddings

Over the last years, word and sentence embeddings have established as text preprocessing for all kinds of NLP tasks and improved performances in these tasks significantly. Unfortunately, it has also been shown that these embeddings inherit various kinds of biases from the training data and thereby pass on biases present in society to NLP solutions. Many papers attempted to quantify bias in word or sentence embeddings to evaluate debiasing methods or compare different embedding models, often with cosine-based scores. However, some works have raised doubts about these scores showing that even though they report low biases, biases persist and can be shown with other tests. In fact, there is a great variety of bias scores or tests proposed in the literature without any consensus on the optimal solutions. We lack works that study the behavior of bias scores and elaborate their advantages and disadvantages. In this work, we will explore different cosine-based bias scores. We provide a bias definition based on the ideas from the literature and derive novel requirements for bias scores. Furthermore, we thoroughly investigate the existing cosine-based scores and their limitations in order to show why these scores fail to report biases in some situations. Finally, we propose a new bias score, SAME, to address the shortcomings of existing bias scores and show empirically that SAME is better suited to quantify biases in word embeddings.
Can an AI agent hit a moving target?
I show that when the money supply accelerates, the learning agents only adjust their actions, which include consumption and demand for real balance, after gathering learning experience for many periods. This delayed adjustments leads to low returns during transition periods. Once they start adjusting to the new environment, their welfare improves. Their changes in beliefs and actions lead to temporary inflation volatility. I also show that, 1. the AI agents who explores their environment more adapt to the policy regime change quicker, which leads to welfare improvements and less inflation volatility, and 2. the AI agents who have experienced a structural change adjust their beliefs and behaviours quicker than an inexperienced learning agent.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Bloomberg: The Biden administration is exploring the possibility of new export controls that would limit China's access to some of the most powerful emerging computing technologies, according to people familiar with the situation. The potential plans, which are in an early stage, are focused on the still-experimental field of quantum computing, as well as artificial intelligence software, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private deliberations. Industry experts are weighing in on how to set the parameters of the restrictions on this nascent technology, they said. The efforts, if implemented, would follow separate restrictions announced earlier this month aimed at stunting Beijing's ability to deploy cutting-edge semiconductors in weapons and surveillance systems. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, in a speech last month on technology, competitiveness and national security, referred to "computing-related technologies, including microelectronics, quantum information systems and artificial intelligence" as among developments "set to play an outsized importance over the coming decade."

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told his French counterpart in a telephone call on Sunday that the situation in Ukraine was rapidly deteriorating and trending towards "uncontrolled escalation". In a phone call with French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu published by the Russian side, Shoigu said Moscow had concerns Ukraine could use a "dirty bomb" in the conflict, without providing evidence to support the suggestion that Ukraine might use such a weapon. "They discussed the situation in Ukraine which is rapidly deteriorating," the defense ministry said in a readout of the call.

Rising Labor Cost Undercut Construction Profit
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a 6.3% increase from a year ago and the highest gain in 40 years, average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees in construction rose to $32.19 in May, which was 17.8% higher than the private sector as a whole. Contractors pay their workers more compared with other fields as this industry are recruiting more worked into what they often perceive as a more dangerous job, while other fields' jobs with perks of remote work, climate-controlled offices or more flexible hours. Construction employers get fewer skilled workers for the higher wages they pay, said Anirban Basu, chief economist for the Associated Builders and Contractors. The unskilled laborers seems to get the greatest wage gains, that contractors aren't benefiting from increased productivity, which means constructors' profits are eaten away. Even as contractors anticipate hiring more workers in the months ahead, they don't anticipate profits going up, as they normally would while adding more employees to take on more jobs.

Only in Wright's case, the shape turns out to be of a Tupolev Tu-160, a supersonic strategic heavy bomber, parked on a Russian base. The outline -- one of hundreds a day he picks out from satellite images -- is training an algorithm so that a US intelligence agency can locate and identify Moscow's firepower in an automated flash. It has become a run-of-the-mill task for the 25-year-old, who describes himself as on the autism spectrum.
