Controllable Fake Document Infilling for Cyber Deception

Recent works in cyber deception study how to deter malicious intrusion by generating multiple fake versions of a critical document to impose costs on adversaries who need to identify the correct information. However, existing approaches are context-agnostic, resulting in sub-optimal and unvaried outputs. We propose a novel context-aware model, Fake Document Infilling (FDI), by converting the problem to a controllable mask-then-infill procedure. FDI masks important concepts of varied lengths in the document, then infills a realistic but fake alternative considering both the previous and future contexts. We conduct comprehensive evaluations on technical documents and news stories. Results show that FDI outperforms the baselines in generating highly believable fakes with moderate modification to protect critical information and deceive adversaries.

This month, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued a "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights." The document maps out areas in which artificial intelligence (AI) might be a threat to our existing rights and establishes a set of rights that individuals should expect to have as they use these emerging technologies. The OSTP blueprint sends two messages. First, it acknowledges that AI is affecting -- and likely will transform -- everything: changing medical practices, businesses, how we buy products and how we interact with each other. Second, it highlights the fact that these technologies, while transformational, can also be harmful to people at an individual, group and societal scale, with potential to extend and amplify discriminatory practices, violations of privacy or systems that are neither safe nor effective.

SEC, DOJ Probe Tesla Over Statements About Autopilot

WASHINGTON--Federal prosecutors and securities regulators are investigating whether Tesla Inc. misled consumers and investors about how its advanced driver-assistance system performed, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Justice Department is looking at statements that Tesla and its executives made about the safety and functionality of the system known as Autopilot, the person said. The Securities and Exchange Commission is conducting a similar civil investigation, people familiar with the matter said. The company's Autopilot system is among the most well-known advanced driver-assistance systems and comes standard on new Teslas. The technology helps drivers with tasks such as steering and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles on the highway, but does not make cars autonomous.

Fake accounts on Twitter posing as late celebrities is nothing new, but what about artificial intelligence technology that can accurately resemble the dead? This is what happened when a new podcast from Play.ht used such a software to generate a construct of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs who was played to be interacting on a Joe Rogan podcast. The developer (Podcast.AI) says that the podcast is "an example of how artificial intelligence can learn about people", according to a report by AppleInsider. The company's official site reads: "The Steve Jobs episode was trained on his biography and all recordings of him we could find online so the AI could accurately bring him back to life. "At Play.ht, we believe in a future where all content creation will be generated by AI but guided by humans, and the most creative work will depend on the human's ability to articulate their desired creation to the machine."


The risks posed by artificial intelligence demand serious consideration

Amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the risk of nuclear war is now larger than it has been since the end of the Cold War. UK police use of live facial recognition unlawful and unethical, report finds

Police should be banned from using live facial recognition technology in all public spaces because they are breaking ethical standards and human rights laws, a study has concluded. LFR involves linking cameras to databases containing photos of people. Images from the cameras can then be checked against those photos to see if they match. British police have experimented with the technology, believing it can help combat crime and terrorism. But in some cases, courts have found against the way police have used LFR, and how they have dealt with infringements of the privacy rights of people walking in the streets where the technology has been used.
