Innovation 2022: AI for Social Good Hackathon

The day before the Intel Innovation 2022 conference sessions started, Intel hosted a hackathon event with the theme of "AI for Social Good." Over 100 developers, including over 30% women, participated in this full-day event. Developers from companies such as Accenture, Deloitte, HSBC, Kia, Lucid Motors, Microsoft Intune, Oracle, Twitter, US Air Force, and Vanguard participated. And students from Northeastern University, San Jose State University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Davis, and University of Manchester also competed. After the introductory training sessions, teams were drafted into one of three different competition tracks.

We are running a series of webinars looking at recent exciting developments in AI, robotics and digital technologies including the work the DART-Ed programme are undertaking around education, and preparing the workforce with the knowledge and skills they will need, now and for the future. Digital technology is transforming how dentistry will be delivered in the future. Adopting digital opportunities will enable staff and patients to confidently navigate this new digital environment. This webinar will provide a scene setting to digital readiness in dentistry, as well as demonstrate the potential role of AI in dentistry and the interoperability challenge in the context of the profession. The third installment of the DART-Ed webinar series took place on 11 August 2022 and looked at how artificial intelligence has the potential to transform healthcare, and in many cases is starting to do so.

The U.N.'s COP27 climate summit kicks off on Nov. 6 in Egypt, inviting us, once again, to consider whether we're doing enough, fast enough, to stave off climate chaos and the suffering that will come with it. The scale of change required is head-spinningly drastic, so even unexpectedly rapid expansions in clean energy won't do much to curb malaise and doomsaying. Here in the U.S., the Inflation Reduction Act, the biggest climate investment in the nation's history, has been met, largely, with collective indifference, despite positive buzz about its potential effectiveness. The bill was, predictably, passed without any Republican votes, a grim reminder of the scale of climate denialism.


Russia Says Repelled Ukraine Drone Attack On Crimea Fleet

The Russian army accused Ukraine of a "massive" drone attack on its Black Sea Fleet in Crimea on Saturday, claiming the UK helped in the strike that damaged a ship. Sevastopol in Moscow-annexed Crimea, which has been targeted several times in recent months, serves as the headquarters for the fleet and a logistical hub for operations in Ukraine. The Russian army claimed to have "destroyed" nine aerial drones and seven maritime ones, in an attack early Saturday in the port. Moscow's forces alleged British "specialists", whom they said were based in the southern Ukrainian city of Ochakiv, had helped prepare and train Kyiv to carry out the strike. In a further singling out of the UK -- which Moscow sees as one of the most unfriendly Western countries -- Moscow said the same British unit was involved in explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipeline last month.

Russian navy 'repels' drone attack on Crimea's Sevastopol

The Russian navy has "repelled" a drone attack in the bay of Sevastopol, home to Moscow's Black Sea Fleet in Moscow-annexed Crimea, according to a statement by a Russian-installed governor, as a battle rages for the control of southeastern Ukrainian cities Kherson and Bakhmut. "Today, starting at 04:30am for several hours, various air defence systems in Sevastopol repelled drone attacks," Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Telegram early on Saturday. "All UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have been shot down," he added. "Nothing has been hit in the city. The situation is under control."

The discovery of gunpowder in the ninth century and the invention of the atomic bomb in the twentieth century may be considered the first two revolutions in warfare. The third revolution in warfare is Artificial Intelligence (AI), the branch of computer sciences that is engaged in the development of intelligence machines i.e. those that could think and function like human beings. AI has gained enough prominence in military spheres by way of autonomous weaponry on land, sea, air, space and cyber domains to be considered as a breakthrough that militaries around the world are scampering to exploit so as to dominate, or at least gain an advantage over, potential or existing adversaries. Air power, from the days of Douhet, concerns air supremacy; that is to say, it aims at possessing the capability to use the medium of air to own advantage while denying its use to the adversary. However, concepts of air power thought have evolved remarkably since Douhet on account of technological innovations. From gladiatorial dogfights between knights of the air, the instruments of air power have progressed astoundingly with the advent of Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles, air-to-surface weapons launched from long distances without visually sighting the targets they are aimed at, stealth and speed enhancements and aircraft performance in terms of manoeuver ability and agility.


Artificial intelligence is critical to accelerated decision making

When forward-deployed Army soldiers need air support, an operations center is tasked with identifying and assigning aircraft aid. With traditional software, an operator moves through a multistep process to search for available aircraft, identify their call signs and assess the munitions they carry. Pulling this relevant information can take several minutes--a long time to wait when making "real-time" decisions for immediate support. Considering the massive amount of information the U.S. Department of Defense must sift through every day and increasingly sophisticated UAVs and UASs collecting even more data, it's no surprise the Pentagon has turned to artificial intelligence for help. The newly launched Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office and efforts and strategies such as the Artificial Intelligence and Data Acceleration initiative, Joint All Domain Command and Control and JAIC shows that DoD recognizes the potential of AI in decision compression.


Survival analysis of localized prostate cancer with deep learning - Scientific Reports

In recent years, data-driven, deep-learning-based models have shown great promise in medical risk prediction. By utilizing the large-scale Electronic Health Record data found in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, we have developed an automated, personalized risk prediction model to support the clinical decision-making process for localized prostate cancer patients. This method combines the representative power of deep learning and the analytical interpretability of parametric regression models and can implement both time-dependent and static input data. To collect a comprehensive evaluation of model performances, we calculate time-dependent C-statistics $$C_{\text {td}}$$ over 2-, 5-, and 10-year time horizons using either a composite outcome or prostate cancer mortality as the target event. The composite outcome combines the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test, metastasis, and prostate cancer mortality. Our longitudinal model Recurrent Deep Survival Machine (RDSM) achieved $$C_{\text {td}}$$ 0.85 (0.83), 0.80 (0.83), and 0.76 (0.81), while the cross-sectional model Deep Survival Machine (DSM) attained $$C_{\text {td}}$$ 0.85 (0.82), 0.80 (0.82), and 0.76 (0.79) for the 2-, 5-, and 10-year composite (mortality) outcomes, respectively. In addition to estimating the survival probability, our method can quantify the uncertainty associated with the prediction. The uncertainty scores show a consistent correlation with the prediction accuracy. We find PSA and prostate cancer stage information are the most important indicators in risk prediction. Our work demonstrates the utility of the data-driven machine learning model in prostate cancer risk prediction, which can play a critical role in the clinical decision system.


Ukraine minister tells Iranian counterpart: Stop sending weapons

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said he demanded Tehran stop providing Russia with weapons in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian. Ukrainian officials and their Western allies have accused Iran of providing so-called "kamikaze" drones to Russia, which have recently been used to devastating effect by Moscow's forces in strikes aimed at Ukrainian infrastructure. Iran has strenuously denied that it has sent any weaponry, including drones, to Russia. "Today, I received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian," Kuleba wrote in a tweet late on Friday. "I demanded Iran to immediately cease the flow of weapons to Russia used to kill civilians and destroy critical infrastructure in Ukraine," he wrote.
