University of Sheffield researchers have developed a telepresence system to treat military personnel during combat. This has been generally planned for offsite medics to don virtual reality headsets and control battlefield robots. The machine smartly takes the patient's vitals with the same technology used in robotic surgery.


Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions (AITX) Fundraising Update

Detroit, Michigan, Nov. 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions, Inc., (the Company) (OTCPK:AITX), has announced that on October 28, 2022 it issued a $4 million note to its largest single investor thereby securing a loan that matures in 4 years, bears interest at 15% per annum, has an original issue discount of $500,000, provides cash proceeds to the Company of $3.5 million, and includes warrants to acquire additional preferred equity shares (the "Fundraise"). The net effect of the Fundraise does not materially affect the Company's common stock shareholders or common shareholders' equity percentage since Steve Reinharz, AITX Founder and CEO, has effectively reduced his stake by approximately 20% (from fully diluted ownership of 65% to 54%) to achieve the funding without any further dilution to common shareholders. Steve Reinharz commented, "My commitment has always been to make AITX along with its RAD subsidiaries the dominant player in the evolving #proptech industry, which we feel we helped write the book on. This funding is crucial to the Company and will allow us to continue to grow while adding potential value to all stakeholders." Reinharz continued, "Certainly, I don't love reducing my overall stake, but the way this deal issues preferred shares and doesn't affect common shareholders, is a significant demonstration of my commitment to the Company's mission and to our shareholders."

Scrutinising AI requires holistic, end-to-end system audits

Organisations must conduct end-to-end audits that consider both the social and technical aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) to fully understand the impacts of any given system, but a lack of understanding around how to conduct holistic audits and the limitations of the process is holding back progress, say algorithmic auditing experts. At the inaugural International Algorithmic Auditing Conference, hosted in Barcelona on 8 November by algorithmic auditing firm Eticas, experts had a wide-ranging discussion on what a "socio-technical" audit for AI should entail, as well as various challenges associated with the process. Attended by representatives from industry, academia and the third sector, the goal of the conference is to create a shared forum for experts to discuss developments in the field and help establish a roadmap for how organisations can manage their AI systems responsibly. Those involved in this first-of-its-kind gathering will go on to Brussels to meet with European Union (EU) officials and other representatives from digital rights organisations, so they can share their collective thinking on how AI audits can and should be regulated for. Gemma Galdon-Clavell, conference chair and director of Eticas, said: "Technical systems, when they're based on personal data, are not just technical, they are socio-technical, because the data comes from comes from social processes."


Current Insights on AI, Breast Cancer Screening and the FDA

Is there enough scrutiny of artificial intelligence (AI) software prior to clearance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adjunctive use in breast cancer screening? Despite the FDA clearance in recent years of several AI products to help identify suspicious breast lesions and facilitate mammography triage, researchers suggested in a recent review, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, that questions remain about data sources, clinical outcome measures and external validation. Here are a few takeaways from their review of the research leading to FDA clearance for nine AI-related products for breast cancer screening between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021. All of the clearances for the AI products were based on retrospective analysis of previously existing databases. Only six of the nine products had multicenter studies to support their use and research for four of the AI products lacked information about external validation, according to the review.

'War of drones': Ukraine troops push back Russians in Kherson

Machine-on-machine cyber defence edges closer

Is the future of cyber security machines versus machines? As hackers increasingly use automation and machine learning to launch cyber attacks at scale, cyber security defenders, too, are turning to artificial intelligence to detect hacks -- and, in some cases, kill them dead automatically. But the use of AI for cyber defence is still nascent, according to many experts, and must be deployed with care. Some argue there is a tendency for the cyber security industry to exaggerate AI's potential and successes, and use it as a buzzword. "Having a fully automated system in the cyber security domain would mean essentially trusting the computer with decisions. "There are critical things that would be hugely costly if done incorrectly," he says. "It's a question of'how accurate is this thing relative to the human?' And, in the cyber security domain, it's just simply'not very'." So how far along are we? Already, cyber security companies are using AI to help detect potential attacks by flagging suspicious behaviour. Justin Fier, vice-president of tactical risk and response at Darktrace, says the UK-based company uses "various forms of machine learning to go into your digital estate and, quite simply, establish a sense of self, establish what is specific to an organisation". He adds: "The minute something deviates -- big or small -- we can actually alert you to that." Darktrace also has automated responses to known threats such as ransomware strains. "Now, the median time to detect and remediate ransomware is 45 minutes.
